How Long Did It Take To Build Philadelphia Art Museum

Despite the fact that designs for a new structure were first presented in 1894, they were not finalized until 1917, and the building did not open its doors to the public until 1928. The buildings interior was not finished until nearly three decades after it was built. Many of the methods pioneered by the museum are still in use today at art museums. 7

The $233 million overhaul, completed as part of the museums Core Project, adds a total of 90,000 square feet of space within the museum and marks the conclusion of a painstaking four-year construction period and many years of design and planning before that.

The Philadelphia Museum Of Art Core Project

Since 2004 we have been partnering with the team at the Art Museum to conduct numerous renovations as part of their master plan to modify and renovated the historic building, and we were delighted when they trusted us with executing the latest and most delicate phase of Frank Gehryâs Master Plan known as the Core Project for the historic landmark museum.

To paraphrase Gehry, the Core Project will âunclog the arteries of the buildingâ making the interior more rational and understandable to the visitor while preserving the buildingâs architectural integrity. The core initiative includes adding 35,828sf of new gallery space and removing and rebuilding various walls. But before the new space can open to the public, we need to carefully work our way through this sensitive building.

All the work is expected to be completed and opened to the public by the end of 2020.

The Carl Otto Kretzschmar Von Kienbusch Collection

The museum also houses the armor collection of Carl Otto Kretzschmar von Kienbusch. The Von Kienbusch collection was bequeathed by the celebrated collector to the museum in 1976, the Bicentennial Anniversary of the American Revolution. The Von Kienbusch holdings are comprehensive and include European and Southwest Asian arms and armor spanning several centuries.

On May 30, 2000, the museum and the State Art Collections in Dresden, Germany , announced an agreement for the return of five pieces of armor stolen from Dresden during World War II. In 1953, Von Kienbusch had unsuspectingly purchased the armor, which was part of his 1976 bequest. Von Kienbusch published catalogs of his collection, which eventually led Dresden authorities to bring the matter up with the museum.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art organizes several special exhibitions each year. Special exhibitions have featured Salvador Dalà in 2005,Paul Cézanne in 2009, in 2010,Vincent van Gogh in 2012,Pablo Picasso in 2014,John James Audubon and Andy Warhol in 2016,Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent in 2017, and the Duchamp siblingsâ, Gaston, Raymond and Suzanneâin 2019. A Jasper Johns exhibition is planned for 2021.

In 2009, the museum organized Bruce Nauman: Topological Gardens, the official United States entry at the 53rd International Art Exhibition, more commonly known as the Venice Biennale, for which the artist Bruce Nauman was awarded the Golden Lion.

Get A Compelling Long Read And Must

Its been an exciting week for the Philadelphia Museum of Art. On Wednesday, the big International Pop exhibit opened, celebrating the bold, colorful works that, as our writer Sarah Jordan phrased it, put the line between high art and low art out of business. Then, on Thursday, the Museum announced a major bequest of 50 paintings from the estate of Ludens cough drops heir Daniel W. Dietrich II that includes works by Edward Hopper, West Chesters Horace Pippin and Eva Hesse, among many others. So it seems an auspicious time to examine the history of the Museum, which was founded just in time for the nations Centennial and endures as a site where everyone from school kids to scholars and hippies to hipsters comes to soak in the healing power of art.

  • Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park, erected for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition, was intended as a permanent museum that would focus on applied arts and science and offer classes in drawing, modeling and design. Its permanent holdings were donated by the public as well as purchased. One early major donation came from Clara Jessup Moore, an investor in the perpetual-motion-hoax Keely Motor Company. Her New York Timesobituary speculated that the death of its founder, Philly con man John Worrell Keely, broke her heart.
  • The building is topped with bronze griffins, and from the 1970s until 2014, that mythological creature was part of the Museums logo. It was then replaced by the word Art written really big. Eh, we liked the griffin.
  • Identity For One Of The Largest Museums In The United States

Philadelphia Museum Of Art Unveils Frank Gehry-Designed Renovations

Pentagram has designed a bold new identity for the Philadelphia Museum of Art that puts “art” front and center. Iconic and expressive, the logo customizes the letter A in the word art to highlight the breadth of the Museums remarkable collection. The identity launched in conjunction with the unveiling of plans for a major renewal and expansion of the Museum by the celebrated architect Frank Gehry.

One of the largest museums in the United States, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has a world-class collection of more than 227,000 works and more than 200 galleries presenting painting, sculpture, works on paper, decorative arts, textiles, and architectural settings from Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the United States. The Museum’s Greek Revival-style Main Building is one of Philadelphia’s great landmarks, and its 10-acre campus anchors the western end of the city’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

The new identity is set in the sans serif typeface Avenir, which was also used in the existing identity. The font already appears on much of the Museum’s signage and in publications and other communications. The implementation of the new identity on environmental graphics and other applications will be a long processthe program will roll out as construction continues over the coming decadeand it was advantageous to have the new system complement existing elements as work progresses. The designers customized Avenir for the new logo, changing its weights to make it more contemporary.

Apart from economic growth, another factor contributing to the population increase is Philadelphia’s rising immigration rate. Like the millennial population, Philadelphia’s immigrant population is also growing rapidly. Renovations Cut Usage 23% At The Biggest City

Measured together with the nearby Perelman Building, which it took over in 2007, the Philadelphia Museum of Art uses more energy than any other structure owned by the city.

At last count, it sucked up more than 125k MMBtu, versus less than 100k for the second-place Curran Fromhold prison, per a city dashboard.

Usage is down significantly, however, thanks to a parallel project that was able to happen because of disruptions necessitated and space cleared up by the Gehry renovations.

Behind the scenes over the past five years, a revamp was going on to make the building more sustainable and energy efficient. In addition to LED lighting throughout the buildings, workers installed a new chilled-water HVAC system and upgraded insulation on heating pipes

Altogether, the $11 million project is thought to have reduced energy usage around 23% paying for itself via associated cost savings.

The Vaulted Walkway Was Built As A Subway Station

One of the most notable new additions is whats called the vaulted walkway.

After decades closed off and used for storage, part of it became accessible to the public in 2019, when the museum reopened its Gehry-refined north entrance, next to the start of Kelly Drive. Now that the other half has been added, the corridor stretches 640 feet across the ground floor, spanning the entire breadth of the building.

Its a visually stunning space, with 24-foot arched ceilings covered in luminous Guastavino tiles and it was originally created to impress museum visitors arriving via subway.

Art Museum Station was built as a stop on a never-completed line, according to Hidden City Philadelphia. Known alternately as the Parkway-Roxborough or Northwestern route, the subway would have run below ground from City Hall to the museum, then continued on elevated tracks out past Henry Avenue, over the Wissahickon Creek.

The line didnt happen, obviously. In 1916, City Transit Commissioner A. Merritt Taylor, who came up with the idea, was replaced by a planner who was more conservative and also had to contend with the scarcity caused by World War I.

But planning for the art museum was already well underway, and the transit entranceway was already included in the plans.

You can see proof of its history when you visit: etched into one of the limestone walls is a wayfinding sign indicating that if you go north, youll be able to transfer to the Route A bus.

Even The Closet Doors Are Made From Quarried Limestone

The walls of the vaulted walkways were built out of the same material that gives the museum its distinctive sand-toned exterior: Kasota limestone, named for the Minnesota region where its quarried.

If you spot the silvery filaments that thread through some of the blocks, those are made of a mineral composite called dolomite the material is sometimes also called dolostone.

With a high magnesium content, the stone is considered highly weather resistant, but that doesnt mean it stays clean. For the renovation, the museum removed decades of dirt that had accumulated on the interiors, and then Gehry matched them, using stones from the same quarries for all of the new spaces.

The matching goes so far that slices of Kasota stone are also used to cover things like closet doors and the movable partitions that can seal off event spaces.
