Destruction Of The Tea

Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum – Tour of the Ship and Building

While Samuel Adams tried to reassert control of the meeting, people poured out of the Old South Meeting House to prepare to take action. In some cases, this involved donning what may have been elaborately prepared Mohawk costumes. While disguising their individual faces was imperative, because of the illegality of their protest, dressing as Mohawk warriors was a specific and symbolic choice. It showed that the Sons of Liberty identified with America, over their official status as subjects of Great Britain.

That evening, a group of 30 to 130 men, some dressed in the Mohawk warrior disguises, boarded the three vessels and, over the course of three hours, dumped all 342 chests of tea into the water. The precise location of the Griffin’s Wharf site of the Tea Party has been subject to prolonged uncertainty a comprehensive study places it near the foot of Hutchinson Street . The property damage amounted to the destruction of 92,000 pounds or 340 chests of tea, reported by the British East India Company worth £9,659, or $1,700,000 dollars in today’s money. The owner of two of the three ships was William Rotch, a Nantucket-born colonist and merchant.

Veterans Day : Boston Tea Party Activist To Be Honored In Sturbridge Tuesday

A commemorative marker for Boston Tea Party participant Samuel Hobbs will be placed at the Old Burying Ground in Sturbridge for the first time on Nov. 9 as part of the towns 2021 Veterans Day celebration.

The event, which will take place on Tuesday from 10-10:30 a.m., will be put on by the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum in partnership with the town of Sturbridge and Revolution 250, a group of organizations working to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the events that led to American Revolution.

Hobbs was born in Sturbridge in 1750, participating in the Boston Tea Party when he was 23-years-old, according to a press release. He worked at a tannery near Hall Road and East Main Street in Sturbridge, later taking over the business which he operated until his death 1823 at age 73.

Hobbs was also active in Sturbridge town government as officeholder for many years and built a home on Hall Road in Sturbridge which still stands today and is privately owned.

Commemorative plaques are being placed to mark the people who participated in events that led to the American Revolution, the release said. Hobbs marker will be on display indefinitely.

Since 2019, 87 commemorative markers have been placed at gravestones of people known to have participated in the Boston Tea Party who were buried within some of Massachusetts oldest burying grounds in Boston, on the North and South Shores of Boston and in Worcester, according to the release.
