American Folk Art Museum Celebrates 60th Anniversary

A limestone sculpture called “Martha and Mary,” based on the biblical story, was completed in the 1930s by noted self-taught sculptor William Edmonson.

How it arrived at the American Folk Art Museum on the Upper West Side has quite the story of its own. It was spotted in Missouri three years ago, beginning its journey to the museum.

What You Need To Know

  • The American Folk Art Museum is located on the Upper West Side, on Columbus Avenue between West 65th and West 66th streets
  • The museum is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a new exhibition called “Multitudes”
  • The exhibition includes more than 400 items from the museum’s collection, including some that are on view to the public for the first time
  • Folk art is best defined as art made by people who are self-taught and have not received any formal artistic training

“A friend of the museum, John Foster, who is a collector and art historian, was driving around St. Louis and he spotted it from his car,” said Christopher Gorman, the museum’s deputy director and chief communications officer.Foster pulled over, knocked on the door and spoke to the woman who lived in the home. “He said, ‘I’m pretty sure that is a William Edmonson,’ which was literally sitting on her front lawn, and had been there for about 30 years,” Gorman said.

The cultural institution on Columbus Avenue, between West 65th and West 66th streets, is New York’s only museum focused on folk art.

Culture And Contemporary Life

Manhattan is the borough most closely associated with New York City by non-residents regionally, residents within the , including natives of New York City’s boroughs outside Manhattan, will often describe a trip to Manhattan as “going to the City”. Morris Hirshfield Worked Most Of His Life As A Tailorhere Are 3 Things To Know About The Self

The artist’s work is currently on view in “Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered” at the American Folk Art Museum.

Annikka Olsen, January 19, 2023

Today, Polish-American artist Morris Hirshfield is considered one of the most significant self-taught artists of the 20th century. But this was not always the case. The term Outsider Art was coined in 1972, well after Hirshfields death in 1946, but his paintings still suffered from the critical prejudice that frequently accompanies art that is made outside of mainstream modes and contexts. In the decades since, Hirshfields contribution as an important Modernist painter has been frequently overlooked, and his work has been relegated to the footnotes of art history.

The American Folk Art Museum in New York has attempted to rectify that, by mounting the most comprehensive exhibition to date of the artists work with Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered. The critically applauded show, on view through January 29, 2023, seeks to not only introduce Hirshfield to a contemporary audience, but also solidify his standing within the greater trajectory of Modern art and rectify years of critical neglect. And unlike the shows Hirshfield was involved in during his lifetime, this AFAM exhibition has been met with widespread acclaim by critics and audiences alike.
