Funding And Volunteer Support
OMSI is a non-profit organization and is funded by admissions, member contributions, public, and private donations, community agencies, federal grants, and fundraising events. The largest OMSI fundraising event each year is the OMSI Gala: a black tie party in May where visitors gather to show support for science education.
Although it is staffed with full and part-time employees, much of the museum is dependent on volunteers who perform many of the same duties as staff members such as greeting visitors, customer service, and performing exhibit demonstrations. The volunteers include high school and college students as well as other community members. Volunteers serve in a wide range of areas within the museum both on-stage and off. After 50 hours of service, all volunteers receive a free, one-year museum membership.
The Teen Science Alliance, OMSI’s youth volunteer program, takes place both during the summer and during the school year. As a part of the program, participants attend weekly classes focusing on developing communication and customer service skills and practice these skills by performing demonstrations on the museum floor. Participants also develop an original science demonstration for presentation to the public at the end of each session.

Omsi Science Communication Fellowships
OMSIs Science Communication Fellowships support and prepare STEM professionals to more effectively communicate with a variety of audiences by participating in a series of interactive training workshops. Fellows join OMSI to raise awareness about their current scientific research while also serving as STEM role models for children and teenagers and building a culture of public engagement among science professionals.
OMSI Fellows are required to:
- Attend four communication training workshops grounded in research and best practices in informal science education.
- Collaborate with OMSI to develop a hands-on demonstration that highlights unique elements of the researchers work.
- Participate in ongoing outreach opportunities at the museum and at events around the state
If the participant receives a College of Science scholarship, they are required to present their demo at one of our events.

Increasing The Visibility And Impact Of Science Together
Oregon State University and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry , one of the nation’s leading science centers, have enjoyed a close partnership since 2016. Joining forces to bring together researchers, educators and the public, OSU and OMSI have helped researchers collaborate more effectively on the broader impacts of their grant proposals.
OMSI hosts its popular Science Communication Fellowship cohort program on OSUs Corvallis campus every spring. More than 70 students, faculty and staff from across science at OSU have completed the training program, including the Colleges of Science Engineering Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science Agricultural Sciences Forestry and Public Health and Human Sciences.

An in-depth evaluation of the OMSI Fellowship program revealed that scientists who participate in the program:
- Believe it was well worth the time and effort that they put in and would recommend it to a colleague, rating the program 9.3 on a scale of 1-10 on average.
- Report improved pedagogical and communication abilities and skills
- Participate in an average of seven public events per year

Play is everywhere! In this Hall young scientist build skills like asking questions, experimenting, taking risks, and sharing ideas with others. Each area is designed for children ages birth through 6 and their families to practice science skills. Explore water, enjoy an area just right for infants, climb high and more. Visit the Discovery Lab to participate in hands-on projects and explore themed boxes.

Oregon Museum Of Science Industry
Have you ever created your own cartoon or played Connect Four with giant robotic arms? Have you ever been inside a real submarine or made flubber in a science lab? At OMSI you can do all of this and more in one crazy day. With the only IMAX theater in Oregon, a laser light planetarium, a motion simulator, a real US submarine out front, and rooms filled with science activities, the whole family will enjoy the varied activities at OMSI and everyone will have a blast as they learn something new.
Nestled against the Willamette River, hidden in the East Industrial district of Portland, a large, squat building houses OMSI, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Here, kids and adults can experience science up-close, playing with all sorts of hands-on displays of physics, chemistry, biology, design, outer space, and other subjects. Filled with science labs and robots, inventions and computers, OMSI is a nest of creation and discovery. Complex scientific phenomena are spelled out for kids and adults to make it approachable and, even more importantly, loads of fun.
Turbine Hall is where most of the action takes place. It echoes with the sounds of pistons and giggles as kids explore the properties of physics and chemistry in the labs, play with the physics of sound and light upstairs on the mezzanine, learn about design and fly a plane in the computer lab, and of course, shoot foam balls out of tubes they can put together in the inventor’s ball room.

Come through the doors and find hundreds of exciting hands-on exhibits, labs where you can put on your goggles and do real science, playgrounds dedicated to the littlest scientists, halls for families to problem solve together, and spaces where only teens can enter!

What To Expect
- Participate in a series of four professional development workshops, which are three to four hours each and spaced over three to four months. The initial three communication workshops will take place on OSUs Corvallis campus at OSU between January and April. The final workshop will be held at OMSI in Portland in May.
- Collaborate with museum educators to develop a unique, hands-on activity representing your specific work.
- Participate in at least three public programs a year. Most Fellows participate in Meet a Scientist, a public program held on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month at OMSI. This program reaches about 300 visitors at every event.
