Most visitors to Detroit miss this tiny museum, but its well worth striking out of Downtown and making the pilgrimage along artsy Grand River Avenue. The museum is twofold. Theres a dinky gallery space filled up with colorful beads, hanging in strings down the walls, and in pots on the counter.

Then, outside in the yard, there are more eye-catching displays like Iron Teaching Rocks How To Rust a whimsical sculpture series is wrought from iron, wood, mirror and rock, and is intended as a comment on the relationship between Africans and Europeans through the ages. Cara Courage, announced in February as the next executive director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, will not lead the institution after all, according to the Detroit Metro Times. No reason was given for the parting of ways, with a museum spokesperson noting, MOCADs Executive Committee can confirm that the museum has parted ways with Dr. Cara Courage as executive director. After lengthy conversations, Committees decided to rescind their offer of employment. They wish Courage all the best in her future endeavors, and they thank her for her service to the museum.

Courage, who previously headed Londons Tate Exchange, had been tapped for the executive director post following an eighteen-month search. On her hiring, MOCAD officials touted Courages worldly leadership and expertise from the arts sector with a specialization in collaborative placemaking and activist arts, which she will use to center Detroits communities in developing MOCAD as a site for positive social, diverse and equitable change.

Correction: Marie Madison-Patton is currently providing leadership for MOCAD but has not been promoted to interim director, as this article previously stated.

Motown Museum: Best For Music Lovers

This museum honors the toe-tapping Motown sound that was born in Detroit. Late producer Berry Gordy Jr. founded Motown Records in 1959 and his label went on to work with musical titans from Stevie Wonder to The Supremes.

Now the bungalow that became Motown HQ affectionately known as Hitsville USA is crammed full of rotating musical memorabilia, from records and concert posters to a knit cap worn by Marvin Gaye. Youll also get the chance to warble a few notes in famous Studio A, where much of the musical magic happened. The museum is currently undergoing a major expansion to the tune of $50 million.
