Contemporary Art Museum Opens In Dc

The Rubell Museum D.C. a new contemporary art museum free to all Washington, D.C. residents opened in Southwest D.C. Oct. 29.
Named after longtime art collectors Mera and Don Rubell, the museum on 65 I Street SW comes as the culmination of a $20 million effort to transform a former junior high school into a space for art. The museums location used to be the site of Randall Junior High School, a historically Black school that closed in 1978. George Washington Universitys Corcoran School of the Arts and Design purchased the property in 2006 before selling it to the Rubells in 2010 for $6.5 million.
The Rubell couple began collecting artwork in 1964. They have spent the majority of their careers in Miami, showcasing works to the public from their collection of over 7,400 pieces. The Rubells also supported many well-known artists at the beginnings of their careers, including Jeff Koons, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Cecily Brown.
Rubell Museum Director Caitlin Berry said the museums historical setting encourages artists to take on the role of teachers and challenges viewers to learn about complex issues like race in society.
Berry said the museums focus on contemporary art will help enrich the variety in the Districts art scene.
However, the new museum building features a new glass pavilion at the entrance to the school, which includes a bakery, bookstore and terrace, according to Hany Hassan, a partner at BBB.
Galleries And Public Spaces
The American Art’s main building contains expanded permanent-collection galleries and public spaces. The museum has two innovative public spaces. The Luce Foundation Center for American Art is a visible art storage and study center, which allows visitors to browse more than 3,300 works of the collection. The Lunder Conservation Center is “the first art conservation facility to allow the public permanent behind-the-scenes views of the preservation work of museums”.
The Luce Foundation Center for American Art
The Luce Foundation Center, which opened in July 2000, is the first visible art storage and study center in Washington, D.C. and the fourth center to bear the Luce Family name. It has 20,400 square feet on the third and fourth floors of American Art Museum.
It presents more than 3,300 objects in 64 secure glass cases, which quadruples the number of artworks from the permanent collection on public view. The purpose of open storage is to allow patrons to view various niche art that is usually not part of a main exhibition or gala special. The Luce Foundation Center features paintings densely hung on screens sculptures crafts and objects by folk and self-taught artists arranged on shelves. Large-scale sculptures are installed on the first floor. The center has John Gellatly’s European collection of decorative arts.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is a museum in Washington, D.C., part of the Smithsonian Institution. Together with its branch museum, the Renwick Gallery, SAAM holds one of the world’s largest and most inclusive collections of art, from the colonial period to the present, made in the United States. The museum has more than 7,000 artists represented in the collection. Retrocession And The Civil War
In the 1830s, the district’s southern territory of Alexandria went into economic decline partly due to neglect by Congress. The city of Alexandria was a major market in the , and pro-slavery residents feared that in Congress would end , further depressing the local economy. Alexandria’s citizens petitioned Virginia to take back the land it had donated to form the district, through a process known as .
The voted in February 1846 to accept the return of Alexandria. On July 9, 1846, Congress agreed to return all the territory that Virginia had ceded. Therefore, the district’s area consists only of the portion originally donated by Maryland. Confirming the fears of pro-slavery Alexandrians, the outlawed the slave trade in the District, although not slavery itself.
The outbreak of the in 1861 led to the expansion of the federal government and notable growth in the district’s population, including a large influx of freed slaves. President signed the in 1862, which ended slavery in the district of Columbia and freed about 3,100 enslaved persons, nine months prior to the . In 1868, Congress granted the district’s male residents the right to vote in municipal elections.

Introduction The Smithsonian American Art Museum houses one of the nation’s best collections of American art. Part of the Smithsonian Institution, the museum’s artworks are reflective of American culture from the colonial period to the era of modern art. Over 7,000 artists are represented in their collection, including works by Winslow Homer , John Singer Sargent , Mary Cassatt , Georgia O’Keeffe , Edward Hopper , David Hockney and Robert Rauschenberg .
