Vatican tour + the best gelato in Rome? | Italy Day 11

Piazza Navona is one of Romes most lively squares and has many things to offer visitors ranging from art galleries to gelaterias.

One of my favorite things to do here is to pick up a scoop or two of delicious traditional gelato and watch the people of the city go about their daily business.

Cremì is a particularly excellent gelateria in Piazza Navona that offers a range of heavenly artisanal gelato and sorbets.

MAXXI is the first museum in Italy dedicated exclusively to contemporary art and architecture. The building housing MAXXI is a work of art in itself. Designed by British-Iraqui architecture and awarded a prize for high architectural standards, MAXXI is mostly glass and concrete, a modern contrast to Romes historical surroundings.

Inside, MAXXI boasts huge open spaces cut with ramps and grand staircases to connect floors and rooms in a catwalk-like design. In other words, MAXXI itself is as much a work of art as the collections within it.

MAXXI houses two permanent collections: one of over 400 words of international art and another one representing the architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries. The art collection includes both up-and-coming and emerging artists as well as established names like Alighiero Boetti, William Kentridge, and Gerhard Richter.

How Much Time Do You Need In Volterra

With its long list of museums, art galleries, archaeological sites, and picturesque streets to explore, you could easily spend one full day in Volterra.

With half of a day, you can stroll the streets, climb to the top of the town hall tower for a birds eye view of Volterra, visit a museum that is of interest to you, have lunch, and do a little shopping. Its also worth it to see the Roman theater, one of the best-preserved Roman theaters in Italy.

Vatican Museums: Romes Most Unmissable

Visiting the Vatican Museums is thrilling, unforgettable and a true must for any traveler to Rome. Highlights include the spectacular collection of classical statuary, a suite of rooms frescoed by Raphael and the Michelangelo-decorated Sistine Chapel which does live up to the hype. Dont forget that you can tour the opulent gardens, too.

Note that the Vaticans museum complex is not for the faint of heart. Corridors lined with exhibits and treasures stretch for over 7km , and youll find more masterpieces in a single gallery than in many small countries. Before you take the plunge, do a little research to decide where to focus your time, and be sure to pick a strategic hour to visit. Tuesdays and Thursdays are quietest, as are Wednesday mornings afternoons are better than mornings on most days and Mondays, when other museums close, and rainy days should be avoided altogether. Additionally, be sure to book your ticket online so you can avoid the endless ticket queues and head straight for the art.

Honestly, one day really isnt enough time to see Rome properly. However, if this is the only time you have, I recommend picking some of the top Rome highlights and focusing on those, rather than trying to see or do too much.
