Historic Yates Mill County Park

The Historic Yates Mill County Park is a 174-acre wildlife park centered around the fully restored, gristmill that dates back to circa 1756 and is Wake Countys last remaining operating gristmill. Located five miles south of downtown Raleigh, the park features a 24-acre pond, which is fed by Steep Hill Creek, several hiking and mountain biking trails, and a modern visitors center that provides a wealth of information on the Historic Yates Mill, the milling industry and the natural history of the area. The center also features an auditorium and space for research by the North Carolina State University, classrooms, and restrooms, and guided tours of the mill are available by appointment. The Mill is open seasonally and admission the park is free.

Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve

Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is 140-acre preserve in the Research Triangle region of North Carolina that protects a population of Eastern Hemlock trees and other typical western vegetation typically found in the Appalachian Mountains. Jointly owned by the state who owns 97 acres of the preserve and the town of Cary who owns 42 acres of the land, the preserve features north-facing bluffs that emulate the cool mountain conditions that have allowed certain plant communities to have survived here since the last Ice Age. The park is also home to the Stevens Nature Center, which located on Cary’s portion of the preserve and provides information for visitors about the natural history of the area and the fauna and flora that reside in it. There are also around three miles of hiking trails to enjoy.

Mental stimulation, discovery, and creativity rolled into fun is what they are going for. Marbles is set up around themed exhibits or play areas where kids can have a blast.

They can run their own grocery store, farm, or post office – all with kid sized props. They can play in the fire truck, train, ambulance, bus, and car.

Every kid wants to be a star – here they can be with the costume and dress-up area – complete with mirrors and stage where they can view themselves on a screen.

There is an arts and crafts center, for coloring, painting, or drawing and the list just goes on and on. There are two floors and dozens of interactive exhibits.

Most of the activities are geared for kids from birth to about seven. They even have a special place for non-walkers!

Located on the NC State University campus, this museum is unlike any other in the area. The Gregg houses more than 35,000 objects in its permanent collection, including the largest collection of outsider art in the state!
