The Minnesota Marine Art Museum is an inspiring and exciting experience. MMAM exhibits 8 or more historical and contemporary exhibitions, and hosts educational experiences for thousands of people each year. The Museum’s exhibitions and programs are inspired by one of the highest quality collections of art in the country. The Museum’s initial collections focused on traditional marine or maritime art, however, through a collection on long-term loan, today MMAM is home to a large variety of the greatest European and American masters. MMAM is the public home to masterpieces by Turner, Monet, Van Gogh, Cassatt, Gauguin, Picasso, Kandinsky, O’Keeffe, Homer, and many more. It is through this surprising diversity that the Museum is not only describing what marine art is, but pushing the boundaries of what marine art can be.

Artist David Bowen blends art, science, and data gathered from nature to create kinetic sculptures, in the dynamic new exhibition, David Bowen: The Journey, opening October 9, 2021, at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona, MN.

This exhibition features two kinetic sculptures that use data that Bowen recorded on a journey aboard the Schmitt Ocean Institute researchvesselFalkor, which sailed from Portland, OR to Honolulu, HI in 2019. The piece Wilderness has never been exhibited on this scale before, and it is inspired by the beauty of nature and the movement of the ocean.

The kinetic sculpture uses data from the oceans waves and discarded plastic bags that symbolize nature marred by trash left in the ocean. The never-before-seen sculpture, The Journey, uses data from the seafloor collected via sonar on the Falkor.

For the installation, a portion of these3D models are carved into individual sections of clear acrylic and set end to end recreating a 27-foot installation in the gallery space, says Bowen. Moving lights within the piece will recreate a sense of movement illustrating the vessels journey across thePacific Ocean as it scanned the seafloor.

I am extremely excited to exhibit David Bowens kinetic sculptures, says Jon Swanson, MMAMsCurator of Collections & Exhibitions, because they are going to be an unexpected surprise for our visitors.

Masks Are Required Inside The Museum

Due to the high transmission rate of COVID-19 in Winona County, MMAM is requiring all visitors to wear masks inside of MMAM during regular gallery hours, regardless of vaccination status.

If you do not have a mask, they are available for free at the front desk. Face shields may be worn in addition to a mask, but may not take the place of a mask that covers the mouth and nose.

The Minnesota Department of Health recommends wearing a high-quality mask to help limit the spread of COVID-19, including variants like Omicron. Examples of high-quality masks are N95 or KN95 masks, which are very good at blocking droplets. If you cannot get that type of mask, wear a well-fitting mask with at least two layers of tightly woven fabric. You can also layer a disposable mask under a cloth mask to increase effectiveness.

If you are showing any symptoms of COVID-19, we kindly ask you not to enter the building and reschedule your visit for another time.
