North Carolina Museum of Life and Science in Durham is an incredible and varied museum for both kids and adults.

Six lemurs live at the museum and are fantastic. Beyond the lemurs there is an indoor museum with exhibits on weather, space travel, and sound.

The outdoor museum has a butterfly house, an insectarium , farm animals to pet, a phenomenal playground, a train ride. there is also a nature trail featuring bears, lemurs, and wolves as well as an exhibit on wind. Whew!

You can use the museum’s video cameras to get see the animals too far away or hidden in certain areas. Burrow cams will let you see wolf and black bear cubs.

The farmyard area has animals that the kids can pet and get close up to. In the Butterfly House there are exotic butterflies that will land on your shoulder. There are also tropical plants and insects from around the world.

Inside the main museum area there are exhibits on aerospace, geology, weather, human anatomy and other science subjects. Everything is interactive with computer simulations and wild machines to mess around with.

The dinosaur trail has 10 life-size dinosaurs posed in natural settings that you can get close to – they are not your run of the mill dinosaurs – check out Ankylosaur, Parasaurolophus, Brontosaurus, Maiasaurus, Archaeopteryx, and Styracosaurus. You will see some new dinosaurs here!

At the end of the Dinosaur Trail is a Fossil dig area where you can dig up ACTUAL fossils.

There is an admission fee but it is well worth it.

The Museum Of Life And Science In Durham Nc Has A Dinosaur Trail

I have lived in North Carolina for close to two decades now and it wasnt until around two years ago that I discovered the Museum of Life and Science in Durham. In an effort to get out more and wean myself away from being a workaholic I picked out the museum as a day trip one Saturday. I have always been a museum nerd and when I found out that the museum had a dinosaur trail AND a giant ant farm I was in.

Some Of My Favorite Pictures Of The Dinosaur Trail

Museum Of Life and Science Durham NC. Video review of activities and exhibits. Fun for kids and Zoo

You knew there was going to be a Parasaurolophus didnt you? Well there was, and I loved itand I may have wanted to take it home with me until the Dr. reminded me it wouldnt fit in the caror on top of the car. And it would be stealing.

There is also a nest of Maiasaura hatchlings being protected by their mother which was pretty darn cute.

I really liked these Troodon as well because of the feathers and the crazy blue coloration. It was a nice change to see this dinosaur represented as birdlike as well as reptile like.

This Styracosaurus was ready to take on an Albertosaurus that has targeted it and an Edmontonia as a potential meal.

These two boneheads were just playing aroundokay, theyre Stygimolochs but, they are members of the Pachycephalosauridae family, which makes them thick skulled and dome headed.

    Frequently Asked Questions And Answers

What are people saying about children’s museums in Durham, NC?

This is a review for children’s museums in Durham, NC:

“This a wonderful museum. We have the WNC Nature center membership and through the ASTC program you can go to this museum for free . We’ve been traveling in our RV around the country and have gotten to see a lot of museums, and this is one of our top ones. We specially like all the outdoor activities and exhibitions, but the ones indoors are pretty cool too. They have a nice area for younger kids, and they have comfortable coaches for parents to watch while the kids play and learn. They also have plenty of chairs and benches outside. This is a museum that you should plan on spending a whole day there. This is great for children of all ages. If you live in the area, I would recommend to get a membership to this museum.”

The Dinosaur Trail Is Small But A Fun Experience

The museum itself isnt huge, it wouldnt rival the likes of most Natural History Museums but for someone looking for a fun afternoon out and an educational experience that includes dinosaurs, its a great trip. The Dinosaur Trail doesnt make up a huge portion of the museum experience either but the dinosaur that there are make it a fun walk as long as its not 1 million degrees with that Carolina humidity!
