Morgan Library Renovation And Extension

The Pompidou Center in Paris, France – Modern & Contemporary Art Museum

The extension of the Morgan Library in New York City is next to the original library, a monument of Beaux-Arts architecture designed by McKim, Meade and White , which had been expanded several times. Piano extensively renovated the existing structures and a built a new building the same height as the historic building, with a simple rectangular facade that complemented it. He also added a six-meter cube as a small exhibit space, an underground auditorium with 199 seats, and a glass-walled atrium which united all the parts, old and new. The architecture critic of the New York Times, Nicolai Ouroussoff, wrote, “the result is a space with the weight of history and the lightness of clouds…a sublime expression of the architect’s preoccupation with light.”

California Academy Of Sciences Renovation And Extension San Francisco

In 1989, after their old museum buildings were damaged by an earthquake, the trustees of the California Academy of Sciences decided to rebuild their entire complex of twelve buildings, including an aquarium, planetarium, and a museum of Natural History, located in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Piano’s plan called for “a group of volumes under a single roof, a little like a village.” The roof itself, 1.5 hectares in area, was covered with vegetation, and blends with the surrounding park. The facade of the building also harmonizes smoothly with the nearby turn-of-the-century greenhouse that is a landmark of the Park. Three cupolas are placed under the high roof, ceiling, lit by natural light through round portholes on their roofs they contain the entry hall, a botanical garden, and a planetarium. Piano’s design for the new building was described by the New York Times as a “comforting reminder of the civilizing function of great art in a barbaric age”.

A Brief History Of The Museum

In 1969, the French president, Georges Pompidou, decided that there needed to be a new building to host the national modern art museum, a public reading library, and new music concerts.

The site for the new museum was chosen, and a worldwide architectural competition was announced attracting 681 competitors from 49 different countries!

ArchitectsRenzo Piano and Richard Rogers won the competition for their evolving spatial diagram design allowing the whole of each 7,500 m2 floor to be used to display art and be organized however the curators see fit. According to the museum website, ts innovative, even revolutionary character has made the Centre Pompidou one of the most emblematic buildings of the 20th century.

The museum opened on February 2, 1977, and since then has been one of the most visited monuments in France.

History Of The Centre Pompidou

This popular Paris centre was the idea of President Georges Pompidou, who first envisioned a cultural center focused entirely on all modern creations in 1969. The building was designed by British architect Richard Rogers and Italian architects Renzo Piano and Gianfranco Franchini, and is probably one of the most distinct architectural designs in the world. It opened on January 31 1977 with revolutionary ideas, design and technical specifications, though the idea of moving floors up or down internally to create different-sized spaces was never realised. It was too expensive to do and too disrupting for the building.

The first directors of the museum put on some stunning shows: Paris New York, Paris Berlin, Paris Moscow, Paris Paris, Vienna: Birth of a Century and more. It was an exciting time, and led to more acquisitions.

In 1992 the Centre expanded to take in live performance, film, lectures and debates. It also took over the Centre of Industrial Design, adding an architecture and design collection of work. It closed for 3 years between 1997 and 2000 for renovation and additions.

Georges Pompidou Centre Paris

The Pompidou Center, Paris

Celebrated for its frank industrial aesthetic marked by its unique free-spanning architecture, The Pompidou Centre – designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, and built 1971-77 – is a civic cultural institution which stands in the Beaubourg area of the 4th arrondissement of Paris, near Les Halles. One of the top art museums in Europe, it houses the avant-garde French National Museum of Modern Art which is the biggest museum of modern art and contemporary art in Europe. Its name commemorates the former President of France . The centre receives some 6 million visitors per year, and remains one of the most iconic architectural achievements of the 20th century, for having revolutionized the old-fashioned design of the typical elitist art museum. In keeping with its cutting-edge architecture, the Pompidou Centre achieved notoriety in March 2009, with its exhibition entitled The Specialisation of Sensibility in the Raw Material State into Stabilised Pictorial Sensibility. In a weird replay of the completely silent piece of “musical”conceptual art entitled “4.33”, by John Cage , the exhibition featured nine completely empty rooms.

Pierre Bismuth Everyone Is An Artist But Only The Artist Knows It

20 October, 2021 28 February, 2022

Temporary exhibition in the Museum

Museum, level 4 Gallery 0

The title of this exhibition dedicated to Pierre Bismuth is a paradoxical reinterpretation of a famous statement by the German artist Joseph Beuys: Everyone is an artist.

It brings together emblematic works by the French artist alongside others made specially for the occasion and offers a new perspective on one of the most unusual artistic practices of the contemporary scene.

#museum: Guestviews Through The Pipes Of Centre Pompidou

The digital guestbook is coming to Centre Pompidou, a centre of modern and contemporary art in Paris for more than forty years.

The Georges Pompidou National Centre for Art and Culture was inaugurated on the 31 January 1977. It houses a very diverse collection where fine arts stand alongside design and even cinema. The Centre is divided into two main spaces, the modern period and the contemporary , plus the numerous exhibitions. In short, theres something for everyone, from Picasso to Andy Warhol! The Centre also houses the Public Information Library, where GuestViews proposes a dedicated app for the Jean Echenoz exhibition.

Built on an old parking lot, the museum was designed by Gianfranco Franchini, Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. Its situated in Beaubourg, close to the Marais, at the very heart of Paris. The architects were chosen through quite an original means for the time: an international competition! The CNAC now represents a unique island in the city because of its resolutely modern facade covered in an entanglement of stairs and brightly-coloured pipes. That means all of the logistics of the building are visible on the exterior parts, leaving the entirety of the inside of the museum for the arts.

Discover the museum from the 28 March to the 16 July and share your impressions with GuestViews!

Early Life And First Buildings

Centre Pompidou, Paris, Modern Art Museum

Piano was born and raised in Genoa, Italy, into a family of builders. His grandfather had created a masonry enterprise, which had been expanded by his father, Carlo Piano, and his father’s three brothers, into the firm Fratelli Piano. The firm prospered after World War II, constructing houses and factories and selling construction materials. When his father retired, the enterprise was led by Renzo’s older brother, Ermanno, who studied engineering at the University of Genoa. Renzo studied architecture at the Milan Polytechnic University. He graduated in 1964 with a dissertation about modular coordination supervised by Giuseppe Ciribini and began working with experimental lightweight structures and basic shelters.

The 1970 Osaka structure was greatly admired by the British architect Richard Rogers, and in 1971 the two men decided to open their own firm, Piano and Rogers, where they worked together from 1971 to 1977. The first project of the firm was the administrative building of B& B Italia, an Italian furniture company, in Novedrate, Como, Italy. This design featured suspended container and an open bearing structure, with the conduits for heating and water on the exterior painted in bright colors . These unusual features attracted considerable attention in the architectural world, and influenced the choice of the jurors who selected Piano and Rogers to design the Pompidou Center.

The Harvard Art Museums Cambridge Massachusetts

Beginning in 2008, Piano rebuilt an existing structure to house the Harvard Art Museums, a consolidation of collections of the three art museums associated with Harvard University. The new museum preserved the picturesque brick Ivy-League facade of the 1925 Fogg Museum , but added a new space in the courtyard, covered by a pyramidal glass roof, which increased the gallery space by 40 percent. The renovation adds six levels of galleries, classrooms, lecture halls, and new study areas providing access to parts of the 250,000-piece collection of the museums. The new building was opened in November 2014.

Whitney Museum Of American Art New York City

The Whitney Museum of American Art decided to move from its original building on Madison Avenue, constructed by in 1966, to a new location at the corner of Gansevoort and Washington in Manhatttan, a neighborhood once occupied by meat packing houses, next to the High Line, a riverside highway and park. The museum, with nine levels, has an asymmetric industrial look to match the architecture of the neighborhood. In addition to its interior galleries, it has 1207 square meters of open-air exhibit space on a large terrace atop one section of the building. It was built of steel, concrete, and stone, but also with pine wood and other materials recycled from demolished factories. Jule Iovine, architecture critic of the Wall Street Journal, called it “a welcoming, creative machine” thanks to its “open, changeable spaces,” and Michael Kimmelman, critic of the New York Times, called it “an outdoor perch to see and be seen… There’s a generosity to the architecture, a sense of art connecting with the city and vice versa”.

Saul Steinberg Between The Lines

Temporary exhibition in the Museum

Museum, level 4 Galerie d’art graphique

From Bertoldo, the satirical review, to his long-standing collaboration with The New Yorker, it is in his press drawings that the American artist Saul Steinberg forged his immediately recognisable style through which, in the guise of a poetic lightness, he questions customs and habits.

The tour of the exhibition progressively explores the artists use of symbol writing, his very personal conception of reportage and press drawings, his interest in fakes and imitations, and his musings on identity through the theme of the mask, before finally questioning the autobiographical nature of his work.

National Museum Of Modern Art

Pompidou Modern Art Museum (Paris vlog #2!)

Set within the walls of the Centre Georges Pompidou, the National Museum of Modern Art holds one of the worlds richest collections of modern and contemporary masterpieces from painting to sculpture, photography to design and objets dart.

Taking up several floors of the quixotic, glass-and-steel Center, the MNAM boasts a permanent collection comprising more than 100,000 works dating from roughly 1905 to the present, and masterpieces from the likes of Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Robert and Sonia Delauney, Georges Braque, Rene Magritte, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Piet Mondrian, Louise Bourgeois, Mark Rothko, Yves Klein, and countless others.

Henri Matisse, Luxe, Calme, et Volupté, 1904.

The collections here were originally presented at the Palais de Tokyo before the Pompidou Center opened in the late 1970s. Today, curators frequently refresh the displays, so even if youve been before theres a good chance youll see works and artists that werent being showcased on an earlier visit.

Otto Dix, Bildnis Der Journalistin Sylvia Von Harden, 1926/Centre Pompidou

In addition to the permanent collection, the MNAM also hosts several temporary shows a year, focusing on single artists, periods, or cross-disciplinary themes. In my experience, these are almost always worthwhile.

The George Pompidou Centre In Just A Few Words

The George Pompidou Centre welcomes over 25,000 visitors each day, making it one of the three most visited monuments in Paris, along with the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre.

It is a building dedicated to public reading, art and contemporary creation. When George Pompidou succeeded Charles de Gaulle in his presidence of the Republic in 1969, one of his first decisions was to turn the capital into a unique cultural epicentre, bringing together a national art museum, a public library, a design centre and a contemporary music institute. It is the grounds of Beaubourg, an empty urban space of 18,000m2 created in 1930 by the destruction of the insalubrious island and which became a wild land, which were chosen for this enormous project.

An international competition was launched with a jury of the most renowned figures including Oscar Niemeyer, Jean Prouvé and Philip Johnson. Out of the 680 projects which were presented, it was number 493 which was chosen. This piece will take up only half of the allocated place in order to leave space for the contruction of an Italian mosaic. This project was thought up by two young architects completely unknown by the public, one English, Richard Rogers, and an Italian, Renzo Piano, who sent it as a joke with no idea that this could have happened. It was however from their fertile imagination, that some years later, a monument inspired by oil rigs and science fiction comics was created, built with a supple, mobile and light architecture.
