About Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, who lived from 30 March 1853 to 29 July 1890. He was one of the most influential figures in the history of Western art. His characteristic paintings are known for the bold bright colours, dramatic and expressive brushwork. Most of his work include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. Even though he was not commercially successful during his time, after his death his work was recognized worldwide and became of great influence for the modern art.
Van Gogh started drawing as a child and was serious, quiet and thoughtful. Later in his life he worked as an art dealer, often travelling, but became depressed after he was transferred to London. The artist was known for his psychotic episodes, delusions and neglecting his physical health. His younger brother Theo supported him financially, and the two kept up a long correspondence by letter. Despite his mental illness, Van Gogh moved to Paris to live, work and eventually die. He remains remembered as an important but tragic painter and therefore its only fair for him to play an prominent part within the exhibition The Dutch in Paris.

History Of The Van Gogh Museum And Rijksmuseum
Many of the Netherlands’ national and royal collections were displayed at the National Art Gallery in Den Haag before Napoleon moved them to join others at the new capital’s Royal Palace on Amsterdam’s Dam Square in 1808. The collections continued to shift locations until a design competition was held to build them a permanent home befitting of the works on display. Construction of the Rijksmuseum began in 1876 and in 1885 the museum opened its doors. A decade-long, multimillion-euro renovations were completed in 2013.
The founding of the Van Gogh Museum was more personal: Vincent died in 1890, aged just 37, having only sold one painting in his lifetime. He left his works to his brother, Theo, who died the following year. Theos widow, Jo Van Gogh-Bonger, inherited the collection. When she died in 1925, she passed it on to her son Vincent Willem van Gogh, who loaned it to Amsterdams Stedelijk Museum until the government commissioned this dedicated museum, which opened in 1973.

Tickets to the Rijksmuseum cost 20 for adults admission is free for visitors aged 18 and under there are no student discounts. Its sculpture gardens are free. Tickets for the Van Gogh Museum cost 19 per adult, with free admission for children under 18 years old on weekdays , students pay 10 with valid ID.
Both museums require you to prebook tickets online and choose a start time for your visit. Entry time slots are essential even for visitors with a museum pass or discount card such as the worthwhile I amsterdam City Card.

Vincent Van Gogh 1853 1890
After his death, all his works were left to his brother Theo. And he passed it on to his wife when he passed and therefore all the works stayed in the family. The next person in line was their son Vincent Willem van Gogh, who inherited all the works. The Dutch State wanted to establish a Vincent van Gogh Foundation. In cooperation with Vincent van Gogh, the foundation was started and in 1973 lends its works to the newly built museum.

The collection of works in the museum gives a good impression of the development of Vincent van Gogh as a painter, from the early days when he painted outdoor scenes in Drenthe to the vivid colours of Post-Impressionism of his last paintings, made while he was in a mental institution in 1890. Besides some 200 paintings and 500 drawings, the museum also has a collection of 700 letters written by Vincent, mainly to his brother Theo. The recent east wing of the museum, opened in 1999, has exhibitions on artists whose life or work are related to Van Goghs.

There are a number of excellent accommodation options within walking distance of the Van Gogh Museum, including the Hilton Amsterdam, famous as the place that John and Yoko staged their “bed-in for peace” in 1969, and the Conscious Hotel Museum Square, which boasts a lush garden terrace and furniture made from recycled materials.
However, for proximity to the museum, it’s hard to beat the palatial, Conservatorium Hotel, an eight-story, five-star hotel with a huge covered courtyard and contemporary rooms with designer furnishings. The hotel is a one-minute walk from the Van Gogh Museum.

History Of The Van Gogh Museum
After his death in 1890, Vincent left his complete collection of works to his brother, Theo. When Theo died shortly after in 1891, the collection was handed over to Theos widow, Jo van Gogh-Bonger, and after her death in 1925, it was then passed on to her son Vincent Willem van Gogh. He loaned the collection of artworks to Amsterdams Stedelijk Museum, before a dedicated museum was called for to house the late artists impressive oeuvre.
Opened in 1973, the Van Gogh Museums main building was designed by the influential Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld, who was an important member of De Stijl a group of progressive artists and architects active in the 1920s. Behind the main building, reaching towards Museumplein, is a separate wing, which was opened in 1999 and designed by Kisho Kurokawa. The transparent building with its state-of-the-art glass structure hosts temporary exhibitions by big-name artists.
In 2015, a swish new extension and entrance hall added 800 sq meters of space to the museum.
Should I Visit The Rijksmuseum Or The Van Gogh Museum
The Rijksmuseum is a magnificent art gallery located in Museumplein close to the Van Gogh Museum. If you start early and have plenty of energy you could tackle both in one day, but its probably too much considering The Rijksmuseum itself is over half a mile of gallery space! Spread the visits over a couple of days for a more enjoyable experience.
If you must choose only one and you are a Van Gogh fan, the Van Gogh Museum will be more to your liking as the Rijksmuseum has only a few Van Gogh works on display. But if you want to get an overview of Dutch art and see more of the Dutch masters , then spend the day at the Rijksmuseum.

Opening Hours And Best Time To Visit
Opening hours for the museum vary throughout the year. During the peak summer months , the museum tends to open daily from 9am-6pm, while at other times of year the hours are 10am-5pm . Winter opening hours are even more limited, with the museum sometimes closing completely on Mondays. Check the official website for up-to-date opening hours.
As youd expect to be the case for the worlds largest collection of works from one of the worlds most famous artists of all time, the museum gets packed. The best times to visit to try to avoid the crowds are before 11am and after 3pm.

In Search Of Inspiration
Following stints in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels, during which time he considered a career in theology, Van Gogh eventually decided to develop his drawing techniques with encouragement from his brother. He returned to the Netherlands for a short time, then enrolled in art school in Antwerp before joining Theo in Paris. At this time, Paris was a hotbed of artistic inspiration. Impressionists were experimenting with natural light, painting en plein air and moving towards loose, vivid brushstrokes. While inspiring, Paris became overwhelming for Van Gogh and he relocated to Provence in 1888 in search of sunshine and a slower pace of life.

Work Of Other Artists
This part of the museum shows an extensive permanent collection of other 19th century artists. They were contemporaries and friends of Van Gogh, and include Paul Gauguin and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
It was in Paris where Van Gogh met these artists and got acquainted with the painting style of the Impressionists.

In the Potato Eaters Vincent van Gogh gave the peasants coarse faces and bony, working hands as the painting had to depict the harsh reality of country life. He wanted to show in this way that they ‘have tilled the earth themselves with these hands they are putting in the dish … that they have thus honestly earned their food’.

The Van Gogh Museum opened in 1973 and is home to some 200 paintings and 500 drawings. Along with showcasing some of the artists most prominent works, the museum goes into great detail about Van Goghs life and the stories behind the artworks. Many of the letters between Van Gogh and his family are on display, translated into several languages and recorded on audio guides.
In the first building, designed by Dutch artist and architect Gerrit Rietveld, you can follow the development of Van Goghs style and see major works by the artists who influenced him, including Gauguin, Munch and Kandinsky. Meet Vincent Van Gogh Experience
The Van Gogh Museum manages an official Meet Vincent Van Gogh Experience, described as a travelling “3D immersive exhibition” using technology and computer audio-visual techniques to cover the story of Van Gogh’s life through images of his works. The first “experience” was in 2016 in Beijing, and it has since been toured globally to Europe, Asia and North America.
The Meet Van Gogh Experience does not present original artworks, as they are too fragile to travel. The “experience” was designed in collaboration with the London-based museum design consultancy, Event Communications , and it won a 2017 THEA award in the category of Immersive Museum Exhibit: Touring.

Axel Rüger, who had been the museum director since 2006, left the museum in 2019 to become secretary and chief executive of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The Van Gogh Museum announced that Managing Director Adriaan Dönszelmann would act as general director until a new director is appointed.
Since 2000, the museum had between 1.2 and 1.9 million visitors per year. From 2010 to 2012, it was the most visited museum in the Netherlands. In 2015, the museum had 1.9 million visitors, it was the 2nd most visited museum in the Netherlands, after the Rijksmuseum, and the 31st most visited art museum in the world.

Van Goghs Artistic Style
Van Goghs earlier works were influenced by realist artists such as François Millet and Gustave Courbet whose subjects included peasants and scenes of everyday life. Van Goghs first major work, The Potato Eaters , portrays a family of peasants sitting down to eat a simple meal of potatoes. Their features are realistically gnarled and weather-beaten, their clothes ragged, and they sit under dull lamplight.
As his style developed, Van Gogh moved towards what is now categorised as post-impressionism, an emotionally evocative style of painting. Van Gogh used dramatic, spontaneous brushstrokes and symbolic colour in his still lifes and landscapes, painting what he felt rather than what he saw. This is perhaps part of his reason that his artwork remains so accessible to wide audiences: the calming yellows in The Bedroom and the ominous swirling brushstrokes in The Starry Night is a telling peek into the artists emotional state. His oeuvre also includes more than 43 self-portraits.
