The Walt Disney Family Museum

104 Montgomery St.Dedicated to the life and work of Walt Disney, creator of some of Americas most beloved animation including Mickey Mouse, this museum is housed in a historic building in the Presidio. Contemporary interactive galleries and state-of-the-art exhibits are narrated in Walt’s own voice, and feature early drawings, cartoons, movies, music, listening stations, more than 200 video screens and a spectacular model of Disneyland. Santa Barbara Historical Museum

Located in Santa Barbaras historic El Pueblo Viejo district, within walking distance of downtown, the Santa Barbara Historical Museum walks visitors through more than 500 years of history with collections from the Chumash, Mexican, Spanish and American periods. Here youll find some 80,000 artifacts and objects, including fine art from the late Renaissance, Spanish Colonial, Mexican, and Early California periods. The museum maintains the largest institutional collection of works by artists such as Ludmilla Welch, Clarence Mattei, John Edward Borein and the old west artwork of John Edward Borein.

Before you get started with your visit, I recommend picking up a map. You’ll see several places near the entrance where you can pick one up. The museum is expansive, with many amazing exhibits, so this is the best way to make sure you visit everything.

Media & Technology is a Professional Network of the American Alliance of Museums , a leading museums organization in the United States. The M& T Network is the AAM link between museums and media technologies. As such, it identifies, examines, and advocates appropriate uses of media technologies in helping museums meet the needs of their diverse publics. Membership is limited to institutions or individuals that are members of AAM. The mission of the M& T is “to identify, access, and advocate a broad variety of program uses for media and technology in helping museum professionals meet the needs of their diverse publics”.

Getting There And Parking

The California Academy of Sciences is located on MLK Drive in Golden Gate Park, across from the de Young Museum. See map below.

The 5-Fulton bus and the N-Judah streetcar will bring you within a couple of blocks of the museum.

Parking can usually be found on MLK Drive within reasonable walking distance from the museum. On busy days , parking is trickier. You’ll have to park farther away on MLK or JFK Drives, or try the parking spots around Stow Lake nearby . Outside the park is much tougher.

This section of JFK Drive is closed to cars on Sundays, and is also closed on Saturdays in the summer .

There’s parking garage under the de Young Museum, a bit expensive , but not terrible for a few hours. There is one entrance on 10th Avenue at Fulton, on the north side of the park, and another just off MLK Drive near the Academy of Sciences.

Temporary Space/reeves Family Ask Science Center

During the museum’s renovation, programming and exhibitions were held in a temporary location. The museum’s Reeves Family ASK Science Center moved into donated space in the fall of 2005 and was open until July 2008.

The Reeves Family ASK Science Center was a hands-on science education space that featured rotating exhibits. Following the renovation the center returned to its location inside the museum.

ASTC is home to the Center for Advancement of Informal Science Education . CAISE’s charge is to strengthen and connect the informal science education community by creating and disseminating resources, as well as catalyzing conversation and collaboration across the ISE fieldâincluding film and broadcast media, science centers and museums, zoos and aquariums, botanical gardens and nature centers, digital media and gaming, science journalism, and youth, community, and after-school programs. Founded in 2007 with support from the Advancing Informal STEM Learning program, CAISE is a partnership among ASTC and Co-Principal Investigators at , the Center for Learning in Out-of-School Environments , The and San Francisco. This is a must-see for a visit to the Academy. The vast dome houses a state-of-the-art surround screen and comfortable seating for an amazing, out-of-body experience.

The Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art and Science was a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate and American Alliance of Museums accredited museum located in downtown Fresno, California, in the San Joaquin Valley. The Museum was established in 1984 and was one of the largest museums between San Francisco and Los Angeles. “The Met” was housed in the historic 1922 Fresno Bee Building.

In August 2005, the museum began an extensive interior renovation the first of its kind since the Museum’s opening. The museum reopened on November 13, 2008 and closed on January 5, 2010, after defaulting on its renovation loans.

Joanne Leonard And Helen Nestor Collections

The Art Department continues to acquire major photographic collections. In 1998 the Museum received the archive of Berkeley photographer Helen Nestor. Containing more than 2,000 prints and 20,000 negatives, the collection highlights Northern Californias counterculture of the 1960s and ’70s. Nestors photographs of the Free Speech Movement at U.C. Berkeley are among the most familiar images of that turbulent era.

Joanne Leonard, Nestors close friend, has donated an archive of 2,000 negatives and 500 prints documenting her West Oakland neighborhood in the 1960s. She used her camera to capture the grit and grace of everyday life in one of Californias oldest African American neighborhoods. Leonard made the gift in honor of the late Oakland Museum of California curator of photography Therese Heyman.

How To Get Here From Bart

It’s really easy to get here from BART.

From the East Bay: If you are coming from the East Bay, take BART to the Montgomery Street Station. Here, you will transfer over to the N Light Rail Line of Muni. Take this all the way to the stop at 9th Avenue and Irving. This will drop you off south of Golden Gate Park in the Inner Sunset District.

After you exit the train, walk north toward the park. Once you enter the park, you will be on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Take this to Music Concourse Drive and take a right. You will see the museum on your right.

The walk takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

From the Peninsula or South Bay: Take BART to the Glen Park Station. Here you will transfer to the 44 Bus at Bosworth and Diamond Streets.

Exit on 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way. You will then enter the park, walk along Martin Luther King Drive and take a right at Music Concourse Drive. You will then see this San Francisco science museum on your right.

The History Of The Academy Of Sciences

The makings of this natural history playground started in 1853 where it first served as an original research center. Since the state of California had joined the United States only three years previous, the Academy was deemed the first association of its kind to prosper within the western part of the U.S. At first, the society, which aimed to collect an assortment of common and unusual items about the region, was called the California Academy of Natural Sciences, and later renamed the California Academy of Sciences in 1868.

Throughout the years, the Academy has been attached to many great firsts, such as leading the way in providing advanced positions within the science world for women, who were typically limited to taking cataloging and filing jobs. The Academy began to branch out from research and constructed the first official museum in 1874, positioning their building on the corner of California and Dupont Streets. Each year, about 80,000 visitors journeyed to the site.

During the post-World War II era, the Academy underwent additional changes and received the Science Hall in 1951, followed by a gateway to the stars with the Morrison Planetarium in 1952. The Eastwood Hall of Botany was added in 1959, which preceded the rapid growth of numerous specimen collections, regarding subjects such as molecular biology. More buildings were added throughout the 60s and 70s, including new galleries.
