The Harriet Tubman Museum & Educational Center is dedicated to the memory of Harriet Tubman and her life and legacy as well as her connection to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Harriet Tubman Museum & Educational Center
The Harriet Tubman Museum & Educational Center is one of the oldest community organizations dedicated to the memory of Harriet Tubman. Over the past three decades, their efforts have included memorials to Tubman, tours to significant sites associated with her life, museum exhibits, educational programming, celebrations and community outreach. The museum building features a powerful and moving mural, by local artist Michael Rosato, of Harriet Tubman titled Take My Hand. Inside the museum, visitors will find exhibits and resources not only on Tubman, but on Dorchester County and the Chesapeake region.
The Harriet Tubman Organization operates the museum and is dedicated to preserving Tubmans connection to the local community and to helping young people see Tubman as a role model. The organizations members have inspired community action and encouraged interpretation and research into Harriets life and legacy.

If you grew up in the U.S. and went to school here, its likely youve heard about Harriet Tubman, the famous Underground Railroad conductor who led slaves to freedom. But did you know theres a Harriet Tubman Museum?
Located right here in Maryland, honoring Dorchester County-born Tubman, the small museum in downtown Cambridge is well worth the visit. Its a wonderful tribute to the strength, courage and determination of the woman who grew up just a few miles away from todays museum.

The Design For The New Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center Expresses The Importance Of Traveling Northward To Escape The Circumstances Of Slavery Through An Integrated Site Building And Exhibit Design
Conceived as a series of abstracted forms that can be interpreted in many waysfrom the farmstead vernacular of the region to stations along the Underground Railroadthe new complex immerses visitors in the story of Tubmans life.
Joined by a shared entry plaza and terrace, the two structures of the complex, one exhibit and one administrative, frame a view north, expressing the importance of traveling northward to escape the circumstances of slavery. The space between the buildings grows wider as visitors venture northa metaphor for freedomand the view to the south is truncated by the splay of the buildings, suggesting a sense of oppression similar to that associated with the slaveholding states.

In terms of design excellence, the forms and organization of the structure not only fit within the landscape but also help tell Harriet Tubmans story. The choice of exterior materials and how they will weather over time worked not only as a beautiful pallet, but also as a strong metaphor.
Travel In Tubman’s Footsteps This Christmas Eve
PRESTON Walk with Harriet on Christmas Eve. Join the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center docents from 3 to 5 p.m. on Dec. 24 at Mt. Pleasant Acres Farms, 22239 Marsh Creek Road in Preston.
After learning that Elizabeth Brodess planned to sell Harriet Tubmans kinfolk, Tubman made her way back to the Thompson Farm in Poplar Neck in Caroline County to free her brothers Ben, Henry, and Robert on Christmas Eve of 1854. Join the second annual Walking With Harriet Christmas Eve Escape to learn about her journey and partially experience it first hand.
The tour will consist of walking the grounds of Mt. Pleasant Acres Farm, formerly known as the Thompsons Farm, for a distance of three miles.
While walking, listen to a wonderful lecture about this momentous occasion in history. The event includes refreshments, which will be served at the end of the walk. Tickets are suggested donations of $25 per person, solely benefiting the Harriet Tubman Museum and Educational Center, a non-profit organization. Children are free, with two paying adults, and encouraged to join.

Harriet Tubman Museums Are A Day
It was seeing Harriet at the Old Greenbelt Theatre that inspired me to learn more about Harriet Tubman. And lucky for us, her travels and travails were local and memorialized in the Cambridge area on the Eastern Shore as close as a 90-minute drive from Greenbelt!
Apparently the movie prompted lots of us to make the trip. The Washington Post chronicled the increased interest in these local historical sites since the movies premiere.
Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historic Park
My first stop was the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park, a joint state and national park that opened in 2013. Visitors experience Tubmans world through exhibits that are informative and emotive, providing an in-depth understanding of Tubmans early years spent in Marylands Choptank River region and her legacy as a leader, liberator and humanitarian in the resistance movement of the Underground Railroad.
.The Visitor Center features a museum store, information desk, research library and an exhibit space. Watch the film and if you have time, listen to the docent.
The website explains that The location was chosen because the view is preserved by the surrounding Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Very few structures remain from her time in the Choptank River region, so the landscape is a large part of the experience. Tubman may have traveled through the area.

The Harriet Tubman Organization of Cambridge, Maryland, is dedicated to preserving the legacy of this incredible woman.
Harriet Tubmans life is now legendary she is an icon of local, regional, national and international significance. The Harriet Tubman Organization is proud to honor her right in Dorchester County, where her legacy began. The Harriet Tubman Organization is committed to educating new generations.
The Harriet Tubman Committee was organized January 31, 1983. The goal of the founding members was to develop a community cultural center. The center would provide services to the community and address the needs of children through cultural, educational, social, economical and historical activities. The center would also preserve and promote the life of Harriet Ross Tubman.
In 1996, the Board of Directors voted to change its name to the Harriet Tubman Organization, Inc. This change more accurately reflects the groups vision for the future and its revised mission. The mission of the Harriet Tubman Organization is to develop programs and services for children and families and to preserve the history and memory of Harriet Tubman by offering the general public an interpretive history of her achievements.

AS OF OCT. 1, 2020, THE MUSEUM HAS RE-OPENED. The Harriet Tubman Museum & Educational Center is one of the oldest community organizations dedicated to the memory of Harriet Tubman. Over the past three decades, their efforts have included memorials to Tubman, tours to significant sites associated with her life, museum exhibits, educational programming, celebrations and community outreach.
Founded in the mid-1980s, the Harriet Tubman Organization is dedicated to preserving Tubmans connection to the local community and to helping young people see Tubman as a role model. The museum hosts numerous programs throughout the year, including an annual memorial banquet in March. The organizations members have inspired community action and encouraged interpretation and research into Harriets life and legacy. Inside the museum, visitors will find exhibits and resources. Volunteer members of the organization answer questions and provide information on Harriet Tubman and the region. Step-on guided tours of area sites associated with Harriet Tubman are available by appointment. The museum has a gift shop and literature about area attractions.
The museum building features a powerful and moving mural of Harriet Tubman, completed in May 2019, that has attracted attention from around the country.
