Tips For Visiting The Museum Of African American History In Washington Dc

The Museum of African American History in Washington DC is one of the best museums you can visit in this city. That’s why I recommend that you take into account several factors to make your visit incredible:

  • Influx of tourists: even though it is not one of the most iconic sites in Washington and it is a relatively new museum, it receives many tourists. That’s why I recommend that you make your visit between 10 am and 12 noon any day of the week. Keep in mind that on weekends it tends to be very crowded, especially after noon.

  • If you have no other option but to visit the museum during peak hours, try to arrive at least 1 hour before your ticket time. The lines are usually very long and this can delay the rest of your day in Washington.

  • If this is your first time in Washington DC, you may not know how to use public transportation. So the best thing to do is to check the metro map and bus line stations. Keep your smart phone handy to confirm your route on Google Maps.

  • I recommend you to bring your smartphone with you to take some pictures and selfies with your companions. Please note that it is forbidden to take pictures of the works of art, unless otherwise stated.

The Wildly Popular Smithsonian Museum Is About To Become Easier To Visit

D.C.s hottest ticket: National African-American Museum

Have you been waiting to visit the National Museum of African-American History and Culture as you watch the elusive timed-entry passes sell out online? Getting into the popular museum just became easier.

This month, the museum will start allowing visitors without passes on weekdays as part of its off-peak season. The museums new guidelines created the peak and off-peak times for 2019, expanding the hours visitors can walk in without the highly-coveted timed-entry passes.

Visitors can now walk in at any time during the museums hours on Mondays through Fridays from 10 AM to 5:30 PM. Entry didnt begin until 1 PM in previous years and during the peak season in the summer.

A representative for the museum says that the museum hasnt seen any increases in walk-in visitors this month yet, in comparison to past years. The representative credits the typical fall in visitation to the start of the off-peak season.

For those working during the week, weekend visitors still need to obtain a timed-entry pass on the museums website ahead of time. The off-peak season will end in February, and visitors will need either a timed-entry pass or a same-day pass starting in March.

The museum advertised the off-peak times in the last copy of the Washington Posts Express paper, which folded Thursday.

Why Everyone Should Visit The African American Museum

My husband and I recently took a trip to Washington DC with our two young sons. We wanted to see the National Museum of African American History and Culture or as its more commonly known, the African American Museum. Opened in September 2016, its the newest of the Smithsonian Institution Museums. Its located on the National Mall across from the Washington Monument. My family has eagerly anticipated a visit since the museum was announced in 2003. But I was honestly not sure if it was going to be a MUST visit place.

After our first visit, I realize that not only is it a must-visit museum, one visit not enough. There is so much to explore and see that we will be visit many more times. I personally believe that every family should visit at least once.

Whats Inside The Museum

The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture is a state-of-the-art building that addresses nearly every aspect of the African American experience, covering the arts, slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, athletics and much more. The buildings exterior, conceived by Ghanaian-born architect David Adjaye, is artfully made up of a three-tiered, bronze-colored screen. This lattice pays tribute to the intricate ironwork forged by enslaved African Americans in the southern United States.

The museums collection of artifacts is astounding: 3,500 are on view, with another 35,000 or so in the collection. Standout items include a shawl given to Harriet Tubman by Queen Victoria, training aircraft used by the Tuskegee Institute, an invitation to President Obamas 2009 inauguration and a boombox owned by Chuck D of Public Enemy.

Navigating the entirety of the NMAAHC would be very difficult to accomplish in one visit, and the breadth of its exhibits is astonishing. However, there are several displays that you should be aware of before you go.

From jazz to hip-hop, African American musicians brought forth new forms of expression that lit a candle for liberty, justice and change. Washingtons Best Museum Cafe

Tour the African American Museum of Washington DC

The lowest rung on the food ladder was once the museum cafeteria. But in recent years the Smithsonian has changed the rules.

Not only is the new National Museum of African American History & Culture the toughest ticket in town, but its Sweet Home Cafe is equally celebrated. The food, an extension of the exhibits, provides a literal taste of African-American culture. The restaurants four dining stationsNorth States, Creole Coast, Agricultural South and Western Range recognizes a tasty heritage with dishes like buttermilk fried chicken, and shrimp and grits. Or try Son-of-a-Gun stew, popularized by Black cowboys.

Lines form for the fried chicken, ribs, and shrimp and grits, but for something different try the pan-fried trout stuffed with cornbread and greens. And for dessert, you owe yourself a sweet potato tart, which tastes like grown-up pumpkin pie. Its an educational experience, after all.

Review The Museum Map Ahead Of Time

The NMAAHC is the newest Smithsonian and in my opinion, the most innovative in terms of architecture communicating meaning. The museums history exhibits start 3 levels underground beginning in the 1400s and then as you move through history you rise up through the levels. The ground level has the Contemplative Court and then the 3 above ground levels focus on the cultural and historical achievements.
