The award-winning shop at San Franciscos Museum of Craft and Design is a tribute to makers in the world of what else craft and design. A few months ago, I entered the grand marble foyer of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the first time since the pandemic began. Being inside the museum was like riding a bike, in that my body instinctively remembered where it wanted to go. And where it wanted to go, among other places, was straight to the gift shop. Standing between an array of Costume Institute postcards and a table groaning under the weight of lacquered trays and catalogues raisonnés and Art Deco chandelier earrings and embossed notepads and desk calendars and enamel lapel pins and leather journals and costumey amulets, I found myself having a consumerist strain of Stendhal syndrome. It had something to do with the fact that almost all of the items were appealing and none were even close to necessary. After the better part of two years shopping very little IRL, the stagy superfluousness of the Met shop jolted me right back into a state of pure purchasing pleasure.

Small Art Gallery / Gift Shop
If you are in the area, this is a neat place to look at the work of some local artists. It seemed to me that everything was available for sale, even the items outside of the gift shop. The style throughout was quite modern, but probably changes as installations come and go. Modern art isn’t really my thing, but I enjoyed myself anyway.The space is not large and the pieces aren’t life-changing, so I wouldn’t travel long distances to visit. If you are in the northern part of south Boston or if you are in North End, and if you are an art enthusiast, you might want to check it out.It is free. Closed Mondays. Otherwise open 10 or 11 am till 5 or 6 or 9 pm depending on the day. It took me about 30 minutes slowly wandering around to see everything.

On sale are high quality, handmade works of artin wood, fiber and metal with a particularly strong emphasis on jewelry.
