Secrets To Help You Visit The Met Like A Local

Treasures of New York: American Museum of Natural History

Hey, there cool kids, madam Cleo the psychic here. Let me guess, youre traveling to New York City and plan on visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art? Know it, kind of like John Edwards on Crossing Over. LoL.

Just Kidding!

Duh, Im not really a psychic or else Id be a millionaire endlessly traveling the world. Nope, no extraordinary mental or predictive capabilities here.

However:

I do believe that youre here because you want to visit the MET like a boss, I mean local.

But:

Thats easier said than done. This museum is insanely large and as a result, can easily overwhelm any first time visitor. (Were talking Louvre

big people. Okay, not quite THAT big but rather large and in charge for sure).

So whats a non-native New Yorker to do?

Well never fear! This New Yorker is a museum nerd of sorts. So on any given weekend, Ill just be walking through New York City and inevitably, somehow, end up at the MET.

Which is Great Because:

Now I can share all my insider tips with you so that you can make the most out of your next visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

On the Down Side Though:

You MUST accept the fact that you physically CANNOT see the entire museum in one day unless you want to kill yourself in the process.

But:

If you usee these tips then you can maximize your time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. So rather than freaking out about what you DIDNt see, instead, try and focus on all the amazing things that you did get to see, like the Temple of Dendur .

A Souvenir With History At The Tenement Museum

A fantastic souvenir shop that really surprised me when I discovered it in New York is the Tenement Museum, located on the Lower East Side.

It is a historical museum in the city that tells the story of those immigrants who came to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to make a better future for themselves. In fact, the museum itself is located in an apartment building that between 1863 and 1935 was home to more than 700 immigrants from 20 different countries.

The museum guide will show you this chapter in New York’s history and some of the six flats that were restored to their original state. It is a very interesting way to learn about the history of the city and its anonymous protagonists.

Back to the tourist souvenirs, access to the Tenement Museum Shop is free, although I recommend you visit it after seeing the museum as it is very interesting and worthwhile.

Kilos Of Sugar To Sweeten Your Trip At Economy Candy

A sweet treat will always be a sweet souvenir of your trip to New York. There are many shops in the city to buy candy, but Economy Candy is unique in its variety and its prices, which are not as high as in other shops.

And Economy Candy has a curious history! It started out as a shop that specialised in mending hats and shoes. However, at the door of the shop the owners had a trolley where they also sold sweets. With the depression of the 1930s, the candy cart began to generate more income than the other products and the business was eventually converted into a candy shop.

Today it is known as a candy paradise for New York’s sweet-toothed and a must-visit, especially if you’re going with children. They’ll be amazed!

It’slocated in the Lower East Side neighbourhood and despite its small size, it’s packed with products of all shapes, colours and flavours, so it’s easy to find a souvenir to give as a gift. After all, you can’t go wrong, right?

Visit The Metropolitan Museum Of Art Late At Night On Friday Or Saturday

The Truth About the MET?

The layout sucks and makes absolutely no sense. Yeah, I hate to say it but the MET exhibits seem to be randomly strewn throughout the museum, with some galleries spanning more than one floor.

Therefore:

Its easy to get totally lost and walk around aimlessly when the museum has a mind-boggling, two million square feet of exhibition space.

The Solution?

Instead of doing one hugely exhausting tour of the museum, do two or three smaller trips when viewing the best of the MET. This way, you can narrow your daily focus on a particular department and can avoid getting museumed out.

Thats Why:

The best day to visit the MET is on Fridays and Saturdays when you have the most flexibility in your visit since the museum is open until 9:00 pm.

However:

Generally speaking, the MET has the fewest visitors on Sunday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. So while you can visit at night, dont expect to be the only one there. I mean, this is the City that never sleeps for a reason.

***I suggest treating the American Wing as a separate entity since it has about 24 period rooms, as well as some painting galleries on the mezzanine. Therefore, try and devout one entire day to explore this portion of the museum.

***To get to the MET on the subway, take the 4, 5, or 6 subway lines Uptown, to the 86th Street and Lexington subway station. The 6 also has a subway station on 77th street and Lexington.

Knicks Or Yankees Cap At Modell’s Sporting Goods

If you’re travelling to New York for an NBA or NHL game, you’ll need to be dressed for the occasion and to cheer on your team. However, the price of official merchandise for these teams is often exorbitant.

Any Book At The Strand Bookstore

If there is one thing I like about Strand Bookstore, it is that it is a family-run bookstore that has withstood the big chains in New York since 1927, which is unusual in this day and age. It has been open for so many decades that it boasts almost 30 kilometres of books on its shelves, or in other words, almost three million used, new, unique editions and best sellers.

If you’re a literature lover , you’ll lose track of time at Strand Bookstore because there’s so much to see and read at its Broadway and 12th Street location, just steps from Union Square.

I’m not exaggerating. When you arrive you’ll see the outside of the shop lined with carts filled with dozens of well-priced books. There’s a bit of everything, so I recommend you check them out because you can find bargains. I bought a book there that I read on the plane on the way home.

Inside, there is much more waiting for you… three floors crammed with books of various genres! Whatever you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it at Strand Bookstore. Whether it’s for yourself or as a gift.
