The Thomas J. Watson Library is the central library of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and supports the activities of staff and researchers. “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” is the first of an ambitious two-part series set to contextualize American fashion design.

There has long existed a transatlantic divide when it comes to the fashion industry: If Europe is about grand designs created by artistic geniuses, America’s reputation is that of practicality and wearability more straightforward sportswear than emotional haute couture.

Of course, that’s not grounded in much reality. The best American designers can move an audience as well as any Europeans can, first proven all the way back at the Battle of Versailles in 1973 and continued today on runways from the likes of Thom Browne and Christopher John Rogers. But it’s that persistent mindset about American fashion that Andrew Bolton, curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s Costume Institute, is aiming to break with his latest exhibition, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.”

“Traditionally, American style has been defined in relation to the principles of simplicity, practicality and functionality, and has often been denied the emotional rhetoric of European fashion,” Bolton said at the press preview of the exhibition on Monday morning. “To address this imbalance, ‘Lexicon’ presents a revised vocabulary of American fashion based on its expressive qualities. This emphasis on fashion’s emotional relevance was inspired in part by the work of a new generation of designers who prioritize sentiment over practicality.”

In America: An Anthology of Fashion is the 2022 high fashionart exhibition of the Anna Wintour Costume Center, a wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art which houses the collection of the Costume Institute. It is the second portion, after In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, of a two-part exhibition on fashion in the United States.

It appears that the Costume Institutes first yearlong exhibition was well worth the wait. While the 12-month stretch was planned pre-pandemic, the timing turned out to be fortuitous since like many major and smaller museums, The Mets attendance had been dented during the pandemic due to temporary closures and COVID-19-related capacity restrictions.

Combined, the first installment of In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, its refresh and In America: An Anthology of Fashion resulted in 947,465 visitors. All told, that makes In America, the fourth most attended exhibition.

However, the Costume Institutes 2018 exhibition Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination still holds top billing. With more than 1.6 million visitors, that religious themed show ranked first among The Mets most-visited exhibition. The second one the 1978 Treasures of Tutankhamunl reeled in 1.36 million visitors, and the 1963 show for the Mona Lisa. Like In America, the museums Heavenly Bodies was housed in two locations albeit one further than the American Wing up further north in New York City at The Met Cloisters.

The Anna Wintour Costume Center is a wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s main building in Manhattan that houses the collection of the Costume Institute. The center is named after Anna Wintour, the longtime and current editor-in-chief of Vogue, artistic director of Condé Nast, and chair of the museum’s annual Met Gala since 1995. It was endowed by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch. As of August 2017, the chief curator is Andrew Bolton.

Access to the Costume Institute’s permanent collection is limited. Textiles are much more sensitive to exposure than other mediums and the Met guards the delicate pieces closely. Watch the calendar for special tours focused on Fashion as Art, as this is the most reliable way to see the permanent collection. Outside of the occasional tours, the Costume Institute hosts a pair of often-lavish exhibits each year. Check the exhibition calendar, but there will likely be one fashion-related exhibit on view during your visit. Exhibits are either thematic or a focused retrospective of a given designer. Digital Representation Of Collections

Beginning in 2013, the Met organized the Digital Media Department for the purpose of increasing access of the museum’s collections and resources using digital media and expanded website services. The first Chief Digital Officer Sree Sreenivasan from 2013 departed in 2016 and was replaced by Loic Tallon at the time that the department became known by its simplified designation as the Digital Department. At the start of 2017, the department began its Open Access initiative summarized on the Met’s website titled “Digital Underground” stating: “It’s been six months since The Met launched its Open Access initiative, which made available all 375,000+ images of public-domain works in The Met collection under Creative Commons Zero . During what is just the dawn of this new initiative, the responses so far have been incredible.” At that time, more than 375,000 photographic images from the museum’s archival collection were released for public domain reproduction and use both by the general public and by large public access websites such as those available at Google BigQuery.

In May 2022, the Met and the World Monuments Fund announced a collaboration of digital work for the 2024 reopening of the African, ancient American, and Oceanic art galleries. The digital project “aims to bolster the understanding of several historic sites in sub-Saharan Africa,” in particular sites that have been minimally explored by Western museums.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has contributed nearly 6,000 images of American and European fashion and accessories from their Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection to the Artstor Digital Library.

In 2009, the Brooklyn Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced a collection-sharing partnership whereby the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection was transferred to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it is integrated into the collections of The Costume Institute. With support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Brooklyn Museum cataloged and photographed its entire collection of 23,500 objects. A subset of these, representing the highlights, is available in Artstor.

The Brooklyn Museum Costume collection was established in 1902 and is the worlds most comprehensive collection of American fashion from the late 19th to mid-20th century. It features masterpieces and signature objects by some of the most famous American and European fashion designers, including Charles Worth, Jeanne Lanvin, Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli, Cristobal Balenciaga, Norman Norell, Christian Dior, Claire McCardell, and Charles James many of whom were inspired to deposit their archives at the museum. Of particular note is the definitive selection of costumes and patterns by Charles James, the British-born designer who was a major force in New York fashion in the 1940s and 1950s. There are also many examples of Belle Époque fashion, as well as accessories such as hats and shoes.
