When You Are At The Museum Talk To The Helpful Staff
When we first entered the lobby, there was a museum staff member with a microphone who went over the layout of the museum and shared where the sensitive exhibits are and answered any questions. My 8 year old asked if they have an exhibit on Kamala Harris and the nice staff member said, not yet! Shes making history right now!

As an active city, Boston and its historic sites can be accessed through several different forms of transportation. What Is It Like Staying Near Smithsonian Museums
Smithsonian Neighborhood: Since the Smithsonian Metro station sits on the National Mall chances are that you are either going to stay south of the National Mall toward the LEnfant Plaza station or north of the Mall in downtown DC near the Chinatown, Metro Center, or Farragut Sq.. The National Mall is major divider in terms of the type of neighborhood. South of the Mall is dead at night. This can be welcome for those who enjoy a peaceful walk through the National Mall, or families who want to be in a less chaotic atmosphere. This is a teaser for the next Smithsonian, the Museum of African American History and Culture.
It rotates through different exhibitions that discuss everything from slavery, to the funk music that so defined African-American culture.
Please note that when the main museum opens in September of 2016, this exhibition will likely be retired.

If Sensitive Kids 2 Options For The History Galleries:
There are 2 great options if you have sensitive kiddos for going through the galleries. The first option, which we did when the kids were younger, was to skip the 3 below-ground History Galleries. This covers the years 1400-present day. The 3 above-ground Culture Galleries are great for kids
The other option, which we took this time, is to move quickly through the History Galleries. The museum has a red box over particularly difficult/sensitive material which you can see from afar and not go up close and read.
When you first exit the elevator, the first exhibit is entitled 15th 19th centuries: The Making of the Atlantic World. It has a beautiful picture of Queen Nzingha Mbande of present-day northern Angola. This reminds you of the history and culture prior to the transatlantic slave trade. The next spot we stopped at was the Paradox of Liberty which talks about the Declaration of Independence and the 12 of the first 18 presidents who owned slaves. There is a shackles artifact right next to the statue of Thomas Jefferson. He owned 609 slaves in his lifetime which are represented by bricks surrounding his statute.
Censorship Of Seasons Of Life And Land
In 2003, a National Museum of Natural History exhibit, Subhankar Banerjees Seasons of Life and Land, featuring photographs of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, was censored and moved to the basement by Smithsonian officials because they feared that its subject matter was too politically controversial.
In November 2007, The Washington Post reported internal criticism has been raised regarding the institutions handling of the exhibit on the Arctic. According to documents and e-mails, the exhibit and its associated presentation were edited at high levels to add scientific uncertainty regarding the nature and impact of global warming on the Arctic. Acting Secretary of the Smithsonian Cristián Samper was interviewed by the Post, and claimed the exhibit was edited because it contained conclusions that went beyond what could be proven by contemporary climatology. The Smithsonian is now a participant in the U.S. Global Change Research Program.

Parking At The Smithsonian Natural History Museum
Parking at the Smithsonian is never easy, but is also not impossible. Your best chance to score a parking spot at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum is to arrive by 10:00 AM. Parking on Madison Drive is metered at $2 per hour for a maximum of 3 hours. There is no parking on Constitution Avenue.
Be careful to read the signs. There are a multitude of special parking spots on Madison Drive. Most importantly, do not park in handicapped parking. If you do not have tags, you can count on a $250 ticket when you come out of the museum. Parking in a taxi stand, a loading zone or other special zones will usually set you back $32 for a ticket.
