Lovers Of Slime Can Gear Up And Get Drenched At Nyc Pop

NEW YORK Slime, the bedazzled, stretchy sensation that has spawned its own social media influencers and fans of all ages, is taking up residence in New York City.

An immersive, 8,000-square-foot museum dedicated to all things slime opens Friday for a nearly six-month celebration complete with a sticky barefoot lake walk and DIY bar. Theres also the opportunity to don goggles and a poncho and get doused in the stuff that has a big following but a questionable impact when it comes to disposal and the environment.

The brainchild of Karen Robinovitz, Sara Schiller and Toni Ko, the so-called Sloomoo Institute is the latest in Instagram-friendly pop-ups to hit New York and then travel to other locales. Why Sloomoo? Theres a thing in the slime community where you replace the vowels in your name with oo, so slime = sloomoo.

The idea, the co-founders said during a pre-opening tour, is simple: To spread slimes powers of rejuvenation and relaxation. Skeptical? Theres a nook with an EEG machine to actually show your brain on slime.

There are slime conventions, online shops and meet-and-greets with top influencers that draw thousands of fans at a time.

The Lingering Questions Part : Is This Goo Sanitary

The genius creatives behind Sloomoo left no detail unconsidered. There are sanitizing wipes at each slime station, and staff members gently monitor guests to ensure they cleanse before and after they dip their hands and bare feet into the slime vats. That being said, business is booming, and during our visit, foot traffic was high. As a germaphobe and a hypochondriac, I wondered with some concern how sanitary all this iswhile I watched my euphoric kindergartener prance barefoot through a shallow lake filled with blue slime. Slime, while glorious, would appear to be an ideal vehicle for transporting viruses and bacteria, especially when its touched by thousands of New Yorkers under age 10, day in and day out. Thankfully, Sloomoo reports they change out the slime regularly. And for what its worth, were three days post-visit and appear not to have contracted any slime-transmitted diseases.

Slime Museum Opens In New York City

One of the biggest internet trends that has taken over almost every social media platform is slime. Thats right, slime, the goopy, crunchy, smooth, colorful, stretchy sensation has found itself on everyones feeds. Videos from people of all ages squishing, and crunching slimes of all textures, colors, scents, etc. evoke a very satisfying visual and sonic experience, so much so that many young people have created their own online retail stores selling different kinds of slime for a profit. The trend is a part of an entire internet community full of videos tagged as ASMR. ASMR stands for Auditory Sensory Meridian Response, and basically is the experience of witnessing/feeling certain visual, tactical, or sonic triggers which then cause a very relaxed feeling and tingly sensation to occur for viewers. The trend has been around for a few years now, but this week its being taken up to the next level.

The social media aspect of slime has really shown community. Theres a lot of sensibility in the world that social media can isolate people. What weve seen in the slime world is that people are coming together, Robinovitz said to Newsday.

Video: Slime Museum Pops Up In Nyc

Here in New York City, slime has become serious business.

Slime has moved from childrens play into the Internet age. It even has its own network of slime influencers. There is an online slime community. Now, three women hope their Sloomoo Institute will attract visitors looking for a hands on slime experience.

Karen Robinovitz, Sara Schiller, and Toni Ko started their pop-up in New York City. A pop-up is a business that opens quickly in a temporary place. They hope theirs will later travel to other locations.

The idea, they say, is simple: to spread joy.

Judging by the goos growing popularity, both the slime and the joy should indeed spread well. There are slime conventions and online shops for supplies. Thousands of fans travel to meet-and-greets with top slime influencers.

Nichole Jackylne, 23, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a top slimer. She works for the Sloomoo Institute.

I never thought I would be at a slime museum in New York City, she says.

Ms. Jackylne earns good money. She recommends merchandise and slime-making supplies. Nearly a million people follow her on YouTube.

The new museums tickets cost $38. That may be a little expensive. But then again, where else can you get a chance to walk across a slime pond? Ms. Robinovitz says its the most popular feature at the Sloomoo Institute.

The Bespoke Slime Bar

Each ticket grants you your own individual container of slime. First you choose your base from a menu of textured options . Then its on to the color counter, where one member of our party enviably selected Gold Sparkle pigment, which instantly gave her glossy slime a Kardashian-esque, high-end glam luster. You then encounter a fragrance bar that rivals the perfume department at Bergdorf Goodman. Sniff your way through pedestrian scents like Butterscotch, Coconut and Cotton Candy, or consider infusing your slime with more sophisticated aromas like Cuba, Cinderella, Dragon Fruit, Caribbean Sea, Xmas in NY, Dirt or Asian Pear. Seriously. These slime people do not mess around. Each guest is then invited to pick up to three accessories to bury in their slime at the on-site mixing station.

I Was In A Severe State Of Grief And Mourning That Went On For Well Over A Year Robinovitz Told Insider I Didn’t Think I Would Ever Get Through It

A Slime Museum Called Sloomoo Just Opened In New York ...

But things changed when a friend’s daughter introduced her to slime.

“I realized that I had my first smile and feelings of joy again,” she said. “I started buying epic amounts of slime, and the more I played with it, the more I was able to stay present and not wallow in the pain I had been in.”

“I became inspired again and wanted to bring what I was feeling to the world,” Robinovitz added.

And from there, Sloomoo was born.

The Lingering Questions Part : Can Adults Go

Stretchy, lovable slime takes up residence in New York at Slime Museum

They can. And they should. As we queued up to enter the Institute, a 20-something couple, seemingly on a date, stood unabashed behind us. They were just as awed as the kids who surrounded them. Creativity knows no bounds. Sensory stress relief appeals to all ages. And it all makes for damn good Instagram.

Sloomoo Institute Review: New York Citys Newest Kid

New Yorks first and only slime museum, in Soho, Manhattan, has been generating a ton of buzz among moms and dads searching for fun indoor things to do with kids in New York, especially when its either rainy or face-numbingly cold.

Psst Check out our list of rainy-day activities in New York City for big kids here! And for little ones here.

Sloomoo Institute opened at the end of October 2019, and will be open for 6 months in NYC before moving on to another city. However, as weve seen with Color Factory, experiences initially conceived of as pop-ups can go on to become permanent!

We went to check out this new opening to see whether it lives up to the hype, and to understand whether a whole experiential space dedicated to slime could entertain both me and my 9 year-old daughter.

Sloomoo, which is located on Broadway near Canal Street Subway Station, is in a regular store-front, meaning you can see inside from the street. However you dont get a sense of just how big the 8,000 square foot space is until you check in, as only Sloomoos retail area is visible from the outside. You can enter the Sloomoo store to purchase slime and slime accessories without needing a ticket.

After checking in with a welcoming staff member, you are given a sticker with your slime name which is just your name with all the vowels changed to oo, so my name was Hoostoor. All Sloomoo staff members are dressed in colorful jumpsuits covered in cute patches .
