Private group visits of 40 or more are eligible for a reduced rate of $14 per person for a self-guided tour. Group visits can be scheduled as a guided tour for an additional charge of $5 per person. On the guided tour, the museums docents will take your group through the story of World War II Aviation and an exclusive behind the ropes tour of the WestPac restoration facility.
All guided group tours start promptly at the pre-arranged time. The guided portion of the tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Visitors are welcome to continue exploring the museum on their own once the guided tour is over.

An edition of Anne Franks diary is among the items that recall the Holocaust, the subject of one exhibition in the International Museum of World War II.
EDITORS NOTE, Sept. 3: Since this story was published, the museum has closed following the sale of most of its collection to Ronald S. Lauder, head of the World Jewish Congress.
The faded uniform wasnt draped on a mannequin 75 years ago, as it is now, but covered a paratrooper who dropped into Normandy the night before June 6, 1944D-Day. He and others preceded the soldiers who waded onto five beaches the next morning in what would be the turning point of World War II. Today, the uniformed mannequin presides over vintage weapons of the type used in the invasion: a British rocket launcher, a Thompson submachine gun, a .45-caliber handgun, a knife, a set of brass knuckles.
That last one wasnt regulation-issue. I think that people carried these things because it made them feel tougher, Kenneth Rendell speculates.
For two decades, Rendells International Museum of World War II in Natick, Mass. has been a window on the 76-year-olds passion, showcasing 8,000 of the 50,000 wartime artifacts he has collected since leaving Metropolitan College, just shy of his degree, after four years of night school in the 1960s.

The Museum of World War II is a not for profit museum devoted to World War II located in Natick, Massachusetts, a few miles west of Boston. Formed over a period of more than 50 years by its founder, Kenneth W. Rendell, one of the worlds premier dealers in autographs, letters and manuscripts, who has earned international renown as an authenticator of historic artifacts, the Museums collections document in detail the events of the war, from the signing of the Versailles Treaty, which ended World War I, to the Nuremberg and Tokyo war crimes trials, which brought the Second World War to its close. The Museums goal is to preserve the history of World War II and to provide an educational experience.
It has been described by Londons Imperial War Museum as containing the most comprehensive display of original World War II artifacts on exhibit anywhere in the world. Rendell has commented, If a visitor is overwhelmed with the enormity and the complexity of the war, I have achieved my goal.

Billionaire Ronald Lauder Purchased The Collection In March 2018
Residents in Natick, Massachusetts, are reacting after learning a World War II museum in town abruptly shut down over the weekend.
Moving trucks could be seen outside the International Museum of World War II on Mercer Road Wednesday afternoon. The museum, which is considered to have one of the most comprehensive collections in the world, announced on its website it was closing its doors as of Sept. 1.
Kenneth Rendell, who founded the museum 20 years ago, said no one is more upset than him.
It was the greatest shock to me. We didnt have a choice, Rendell said.
Rendell said most of the collection is now owned by Ronald Lauder, a billionaire art collector who is also an heir to the Estee Lauder cosmetics empire.
The collection was sold for $25 million in March 2018 after a plan to expand the museum fell through and operating funds started running low. He said Lauder was going to help move it to Washington D.C., but agreed to let the collection be on loan to the Natick museum until the end of 2019.
Rendell said he never imagined Lauder would cancel the loan agreement and demand the collection sooner, but he claims that is what happened.

Relation To New Orleans
The museum closed for three months after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans on August 29, 2005, re-opening on December 3 of that year. A museum banner promoted the re-opening by proclaiming We Have Returned, a phrase made famous by General Douglas MacArthur regarding his eventual return to the Philippines in 1944.
As of 2015, the museum is in the midst of a $400 million capital expansion campaign called The Road to Victory: A Vision for Future Generations. The expansion has resulted in significant increases in attendance. The Solomon Victory Theater, Stage Door Canteen, and American Sector restaurant opened in November 2009. The John E. Kushner Restoration Pavilion opened in June 2011. The US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center opened to the public in 2013, followed by the opening of the first phase of the Campaigns of Courage pavilion in 2014. The second phase of the Campaigns of Courage Pavilion, Road to Tokyo, opened in 2015. The final project in the expansion will be the Liberation Pavilion. Initially, the intended date of completion of the expansion project was 2015, but ground has not yet been broken on the final pavilion.
Visitation at the museum continues to grow, with 406,251 in 2010 having grown to nearly 700,000 in fiscal year 2016.

In Natick World War Ii Museum Abruptly Shuts Down
The International Museum of World War II in Natick closed down abruptly over the weekend amid a legal battle with billionaire Ronald S. Lauder, with whose help the museum had planned to relocate eventually to Washington, D.C.
This was sudden and very unexpected, director Kenneth W. Rendell, who founded the museum 20 years ago, said Monday. Im extremely disappointed and bewildered.
In May, Rendell had revealed that he was working with donors to move the museum to Washington. At the time, however, he did not disclose that he had sold Lauder the core of the museums holdings for $25 million in March 2018. The contract called on both parties to keep the deal secret.
The thousands of purchased artifacts, owned by Rendell and his wife, Shirley McNerney Rendell, range from a Sherman tank and a Higgins landing boat to Hitlers uniform and mustache trimmer. They made up more than 65 percent of the museums collection, Rendell estimated.
The future of the collection is now unclear. In a written statement Monday evening, a representative for Lauder wrote: While it has not yet been decided where each object will be on display, Ambassador Lauder wants to make sure that the objects find a home that attracts an even bigger audience than where the objects are currently on display.
In court filings, Lauders lawyers have not indicated why they sought to terminate the lease, beyond saying they wanted the artifacts moved to a separate storage site to be inventoried.

A Pivotal Local Connection
The Higgins boat in the atrium gives a clue to the museums origin and location. During World War II, the Navy needed a shallow-draft landing vessel to bring soldiers ashore for combat. New Orleans-based Andrew Higgins had been building similar boats to navigate Louisianas shallow bayous, and modified his design for battle. By wars end, Higgins local factories produced more than 20,000 of the essential landing craft, inspiring Dwight Eisenhower to declare him, the man who won World War II for us. The museums Bayou to Battlefield exhibit details Higgins important contribution to the war effort.
University of New Orleans professor and author Stephen Ambroses 1995 book on D-Day inspired him to found the National D-Day Museum, which opened in New Orleans in 2000 with a single building. Since then, the museums mission has expanded to encompass all of the war, with Congress officially designating it as the National WWII Museum in 2004. The campus continues to expand as well, with a sixth building, the Liberation Pavilion , currently under construction.

The Museum received a $100,000 grant from Cummings Foundation to develop our education program. The program will include hands-on field experiences for students, professional development workshops for teachers, and utilize technology to enhance interaction with the Museums authentic artifacts. Developing the program will be Marshall W. Carter who joins the Museum in the fall as its first Director of Education.
