Butterflies Alive Exhibits To Reopen At Santa Barbara Natural History Museum May 29

The Gulf fritillary is one of many types of butterflies that can be seen at the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum Butterflies Alive summer exhibits.
The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History’s annual Butterflies Alive summer exhibits will reopen to the public Saturday after its indoor exhibits were closed last year due to the pandemic.
This year, guests can witness 1,000 live butterflies floating around the outdoor Sprague Butterfly Pavilion and also watch butterflies emerge from their chrysalides located inside the museum’s designated emergence chamber.
We are excited to invite members and guests back to our Butterfly Pavilion this summer,” said Butterfly Pavilion Senior Manager Kim Zsembik. “After so much positive feedback last year, weve kept our socially distant pavilion similar to 2020, allowing families and guests to peacefully explore the pavilion in nine butterfly zones. Guest favorites like malachite and swallowtail butterflies are not to be missed.”
A variety of butterflies that can be spotted include local favorites like the monarch and exotic swallowtails, longwings, Gulf fritillaries and malachites.
A Day’s Work Is Never Done
Butterflies may be small for the most part, but keeping them happy takes a lot of work.
‘People often say that a butterfly exhibition in a zoo or wildlife park is one of the most time-consuming to run,’ says Luke.
‘I’m not saying it’s easy to keep elephants, lions and tigers,’ he explains, ‘but those need very little attention throughout the day.
‘With a butterfly house, it’s continual.’
Museum volunteers help maintain the butterfly house each day and also answer visitors’ questions
A day in the Museum’s butterfly house starts two hours before the exhibition opens. The team spend a large portion of that time watering the foliage.
Other daily tasks include removing dead flowers, preparing fruit, clearing the puparium of butterflies that have emerged and checking for disease and pests.

The team also ensure none of the butterflies escape into the wild. Although they would not likely survive long in such a different climate, it is important that exotic species are not introduced into the wild in Britain.
Measures are put in place to avoid any major breakouts. The house features two sets of special doors and a plant border runs along the entire outside length.
‘Although it may look like an aesthetic gardening choice, the flowers serve as the largest source of nectar in a three- to four- mile radius,’ says Luke.

Nature And The Human Spirit
The Natural History museum is a huge inspiration and statement to everyone in this country. All exhibits force you to perceive a different reality on the world. When referring to Herschelâs beliefs, I would agree that every person needs to enjoy a nice day in the Florida sun. As previously stated, the butterfly museum brought the most light to my eyes. I stood in the vastness of the exhibit and was so appreciative of the opportunity.

Whats The Natural History Museum Like Since Covid
- We recommend that you wear a face covering inside the Museum, in line with government guidance.
- The Museum is continuing to operate at a reduced capacity to give visitors more space to enjoy. Guests should follow the signposted one-way routes
- Hand sanitiser is available throughout the Museum
- Facilities will be cleaned throughout the day by staff
- Guests should pay with contactless, although cash will still be accepted
- Protective screens are in place at key touchpoints such as cafes, shops and information desks. Face coverings are optional for staff
- It is no longer a legal requirement to collect your contact details for Test and Trace purposes. NHS QR codes are still be available for those who choose to check in using the NHS COVID-19 app.

Thousands Of Visitors Visiting Butterfly Exhibit At Santa Barbara Museum Of Natural History
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The giant butterflies are hard to miss at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.We wanted to see the blue Morpho butterflies we like it very much actually we were watching a documentary that mostly focused on them last night they are amazing,” said visitor Audrey Garcia-Martinez.
Since its opening, the exhibit has drawn nearly a thousand visitors every day.
Directors with the museum say visitors travel from all over the region just to see the butterfly exhibit.
It is too much fun Too much fun everybody comes in smiling and they go out really beaming after spending time in this beautiful peaceful environment with amazing butterflies,” said volunteer Penny Porter.
The exhibit features a thousand butterflies, from local favorites to exotic tropical species.
“Theyre not just wimps live everyone things. Theyre tough they have markings … theyre quit a beautiful creature,” said visitor Krishna Garcia-Martinez.
The butterfy exhibit runs until Labor Day Weekend at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

What Were The Best Bits
We gazed for minutes at a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis in the window of the butterfly nursery, where dozens of pupas hung in rows, waiting to hatch. The children and I trod carefully along the rubber walkway, trying and failing to point out every butterfly we could spot as there were just too many of them.
Roccos favourite were the emerald green beauties, while the older two were keen to have me read the information panels, which are judiciously scattered around, so they could learn a little more about the creatures.

According to a museum spokeswoman, various butterfly species cycle through the pavilion throughout the summer, so no two visits are the same.
Both indoor and outdoor exhibits will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday through Monday, Sept. 6.
Reservations are required for admission at sbnature.org/tickets, and a limited number of guests are permitted on campus at one time.
Face masks are currently required for anyone 3 years or older and must cover nose and mouth at all times while on museum property, both indoors and outdoors, the spokeswoman said.

Is The Exhibition Educational
Yes the panels list bite-sized pieces of information about the various butterflies that have been ethically sourced from Africa, Asia and the Americas and are a great way to absorb facts without having to take your eyes off the main attraction for too long.
There were also several knowledgeable staff members on hand to explain the patterns, preferences and wingspans of the insects, which made for an educational and entertaining experience.
Building A Home For Happy Butterflies
Because butterflies are exceptionally sensitive to changes in their environment, building a house for them is a delicate task. Conditions have to be just right to keep these fragile animals happy and flying at their best.

With average temperatures of 27 degrees Celsius by day and 18 degrees at night, and at 100% humidity, the butterfly house is truly home to the many tropical species inside.
‘The idea is to get the environment in the house as close to the butterflies’ natural environment as possible,’ says Luke.
‘In Britain, we’re in a climate that’s far too cold for tropical and subtropical species. But by covering an area with glass or plastic you can dictate the environment inside and create the butterflies’ ideal conditions.’

Monarch butterflies will fill the skies again on Saturday, July 23, 9 am 12 pm, at Wish Upon a Butterfly, an annual fundraiser at the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History. This symbolic event highlights the elegant monarch, the Texas state insect. This year, festivities begin inside the Museum where guests may make a wish keepsake and other butterfly crafts before receiving their purchased butterflies outside from 10 – 10:30 am for release.
One butterfly ticket purchase per family includes admission inside the Museum where visitors may enjoy the observation bee hive, butterfly displays, live music, refreshments, activities, and other Museum exhibits.

In a word magical! The butterflies were entrancing and utterly captivating. The short walk through the enclosure felt like an escape to an otherworldly paradise, where brightly coloured winged insects flutter between lush foliage and tropical flowers. The 3 kids I took in were awestruck and walked around pointing at everything with their mouths agape.
