Experiencing The Amazing Lucy

Jim CheneyDisclosure:

As a child growing up in the 80s and 90s, I have great memories of watching Nick at Night and seeing many of the older television shows from the fifties, sixties, and seventies. And while there were many that I enjoyed, none made me laugh more than I Love Lucy.

So, when I discovered that Jamestown, New York, was the hometown of Lucille Ball and had a museum dedicated to her life, I knew I had to visit.

The Lucy-Desi Museum is located in the heart of Jamestown, a city in southwestern New Yorks Chautauqua County. The museum is actually split into two separate buildings that celebrate the life of local legend Lucille Ball and her partner Desi Arnaz.

The two museums together are officially known as the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum and occupy two adjacent buildings along West 3rd Street.

During my visit, I opted to first visit the Desilu Museum, which is essentially an I Love Lucy Museum. If youve ever seen the show, you are going to really enjoy this spot.

Inside, the Desilu Museum is filled with props used by each of the main characters on the show, though the plurality of the costumes and props were used by Ball.

Next to many of the artifacts from the show are photos that show the items on-screen and text describing the episode and how the piece was used in the show. It really is great seeing photos of classic scenes from I Love Lucy and looking at clothing or set props that were used during the episodes.

The Lucy Desi Museum and Desilu Studios preserve the memory of Jamestown’s favorite daughter, Lucille Ball, and her nutty Cuban first husband, Desi Arnaz . You could argue that it’s hardly necessary streaming video will ensure that classic teevee’s most beloved comedienne will never fade from public view, even though she died two generations ago in 1989.

Lucy worked in Hollywood for over 50 years, leaving behind truckloads of comic props, costumes, awards, and mementos — so many, in fact, that her museum is split into two different collections: the Desilu Studios and the Lucy-Desi Museum . And even that’s not enough the staff routinely cycles displays in and out, bringing back old favorites and adding new discoveries.

“The archives are right next door, and we’re always going down there,” said Steve Neilans, the museums’ marketing guy. “We’ll find something, watch a Lucy episode, zoom into the picture, and say, ‘Oh, that’s what that is.'”

A good example of Lucy archeology is the saxophone on display, seen in I Love Lucy episode #38. “Lucy does not want to be left home while Ricky tours with his band,” explains an accompanying sign, describing the plot. “You can still see some red lipstick on the mouthpiece that was left from the Queen of Comedy.”

Weeklong Celebration Of Lucille Ball Wraps Up Saturday In Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. Friday would have been Jamestown’s own Lucille Ball’s 110th birthday.

The National Comedy Center and the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum in Jamestown have spent the week honoring and remembering her, and it all culminates with a special celebration on Saturday, starting at 7 p.m. in Comedy Center Park.

It includes an outdoor screening of three classic “I Love Lucy” episodes, along with live music.

This comes amid some big news about another hilarious woman steps into a new role at the National Comedy Center. Tiffany Haddish will join its advisory board, filling the spot formerly held by the late Carl Reiner.

“Tiffany as an individual and as an artist, is advancing the art form,” Journey Gunderson, the executive director of the National Comedy Center, told 2 On Your Side during a Town Hall broadcast. “But not only that, she is using the power of her foothold in comedy and her brand name to help others into the industry and to create opportunities for more people in comedy.

“And so it’s only fitting that we make this announcement from Lucille Ball his hometown on Lucille Ball is 110th birthday, because we see some synergy in those core values with the work and professional career of Lucille Ball.”

Gunderson added: “So, again, we couldn’t be happier because our job is to tell the story of comedy and preserve its heritage and Tiffany Haddish joining the National Comedy Center advisory board helps us advance that mission for generations to come.”

I LOVE I Love Lucy

As a life long I Love Lucy fan this was the highlight of our time in Jamestown. It was so cool to get to see so many artifacts from the shows including costumes, props, and of course the replica living room/Hollywood Apt. Getting to see that living room in person and in color was great, and even better was that you are able to pay to get to walk into the apartment and take pictures! Loved seeing all the memorabilia and videos of those who worked on the show. Getting to do the Vitameatavegamin commercial was also a fun little surprise. I also went a bit crazy in the gift shop, but I regret nothing!

A must while in Jamestown!

We loved touring this museum at our own pace, while immersing ourselves in Lucy & Desis accomplishments. It is filled with memorabilia and detailed information on their lives.

We highly recommend buying a combo ticket in advance, which includes the National Comedy Center. No worries if you cant see both in one day, even though you are reserving a date & time, with your wristband kept on, you are able to return the next day and see the other.
