Whitney Museum Of American Art New York City

The decided to move from its original building on Madison Avenue, constructed by in 1966, to a new location at the corner of Gansevoort and Washington in Manhatttan, a neighborhood once occupied by meat packing houses, next to the , a riverside highway and park. The museum, with nine levels, has an asymmetric industrial look to match the architecture of the neighborhood. In addition to its interior galleries, it has 1,207 m2 of open-air exhibit space on a large terrace atop one section of the building. It was built of steel, concrete, and stone, but also with pine wood and other materials recycled from demolished factories. Jule Iovine, architecture critic of the Wall Street Journal, called it “a welcoming, creative machine” thanks to its “open, changeable spaces,” and Michael Kimmelman, critic of the New York Times, called it “an outdoor perch to see and be seen… There’s a generosity to the architecture, a sense of art connecting with the city and vice versa”.

Old Port Of Genoa And Lingotto Factory In Turin

San Diego Natural History Museum

In the mid-1980s Piano and his firm took on a wide variety of projects, using the most advanced technology available, but, in contrast to the Pompidou Center, as discreetly as possible. His portable pavilion for IBM was an example designed with , it a lightweight portable tunnel for expositions. It composed of a series of pyramids of polycarbonate supported by a wooden frame, and could be transported in a truck. It was designed to integrate the scenery outside into displays in the interior. He designed a two major reconstruction projects in northern Italy the reanimation of the old port of his native city, , and the conversion and modernization of the gigantic and historic factory in , Italy. For the Fiat factory, he preserved the enormous main structure, including its famous oval test track for automobiles on the roof, but added new structures, including a concert hall beneath the building, a heliport, and a glass domed conference center on the roof. He continued his modifications and additions over two decades without destroying the historic core of the building. The most recent was a museum for the art collection of the Fiat head in an elegant glass and steel box perched on the roof, as if it were about to take off it was nicknamed the “Flying bank vault”.

Golden Gate Park Site

In 1916, the Academy moved to the North American Hall of Birds and Mammals in Golden Gate Park, the first building on the site that was to become its permanent home. In 1923, the Steinhart Aquarium was added, followed in 1934 by the Simson African Hall.

During World War II, the Academy contributed to the American war effort by using its workshop facilities to repair optical and navigational equipment for United States Navy ships San Francisco was a major port for the Pacific War arena.

The post-war years saw a flurry of new construction on the site the Science Hall was added in 1951, followed by the Morrison Planetarium in 1952. The Morrison Planetarium was the seventh major planetarium to open in the United States and featured a one-of-a-kind star projector, built by Academy staff members . The Academy Projector projected irregularly shaped stars, rather than the circular stars projected by many optical star projectors. The irregular shapes were created by placing variously sized grains of silicon carbide onto the glass star plates by hand, then aluminizing the plates, and brushing away the silicon carbide grains.

In 1959, the Malliard Library, Eastwood Hall of Botany, and Livermore Room all were added. Throughout the 1960s, universities concentrating on the new field of molecular biology divested themselves of their traditional specimen collections, entrusting them to the Academy and leading to a rapid growth of the Academy’s holdings.

Environmental Design Of New Building

San Diego Natural History Museum paleontologist celebrates Dinosaur Day

The design architect for the museum replacement project was Renzo Piano. His design was awarded the Urban Land Institute Award for Excellence for the Americas region in 2008, as well as the Holcim Award Silver for sustainable construction projects in the North America region in 2005. One critic praised the building as a “blazingly uncynical embrace of the Enlightenment values of truth and reason”, and a “comforting reminder of the civilizing function of great art in a barbaric age”.

The new building emphasizes environmentally friendly design, in keeping with the Academy’s focus on ecological concerns and environmental sustainability. It received Platinum certification under the LEED program. This project was featured on the Discovery ChannelExtreme Engineering series in 2006 and on the National Geographic ChannelMan-Made series in July 2008.

The new building includes an array of environmentally friendly features:

  • Produces 50 percent less waste water than previously
  • Recycles rainwater for irrigation

Institute For Biodiversity Science And Sustainability

Besides its function as source of public science education through its museum, the California Academy of Sciences also operates the Institute for Biodiversity Science and Sustainability as its research arm, conducting research in the fields of taxonomy, phylogenetics, and biodiversity studies. Although one aspect of the IBSS is available for view by museum patrons at the science “project lab” exhibit, most of the research happens in laboratories and facilities “behind the scenes” and not observable by the public. In fact, unbeknownst to most patrons, research and administrative facilities occupy nearly 50% of the Academy’s physical structure.

  • Great Natural History Museum In Golden Gate Park

We thoroughly enjoy the California Academy of Sciences every time we visit. The exhibits are well-presented and informative, and it’s always great to walk through the “rainforest”. The earthquake show was actually quite cool, and the shake house exhibit was interesting having been through a few very damaging quakes, it’s nice to go through the experience without having to worry about destruction in my own house! And of course, it’s always nice to see the albino alligator, lazily floating around his pond, minding his own business.

Loved the rain forest and living rooftop exhibits. The earthquake show at the planetarium was disappointing . There were a lot of hands-on opportunities, especially for younger kids right at the start. It was neat to see, but almost overwhelming. Minor disappointment– the built for speed exhibit which covers the America’s Cup boat never even mentioned the physics .

We ran out of time and didn’t have enough time to spend here. We only made it through the Rainforeest and part of the Aquarium. Both were fantastic and all 5 in our group loved all of it. Wish we had time to see the rest!

Paris The Whale Commercial Mall Bercy 2

“The Whale” Bercy 2 is a shopping mall with 70 stores and 36,000 m2 located in Paris , along the bankside of the river Seine and the “Périphérique” ring road.

Inaugurated on April 24, 1990, the building is only the third work of architect after the Centre Pompidou. The cyclopean wooden structure, covered with 27,000 satin stainless steel tiles and pierced with oculus to let an overhead light pass, is completely innovative. Its curvature which follows the turn of a ramp on the ring road evokes a large airship, hence the nicknames “The Zeppelin” or “The Whale”.

Valletta City Gate And Parliament House Malta

A Tour of California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco

The ‘City Gate’ project in , Malta was the complete reorganization of the principal entrance to the Maltese capital of Valletta. It included a massive through the , an open-air theatre machine within the ruins of the former , and the construction of a new Parliament building. The gate project was controversial, though the old gate it replaced was only built in the 1960s, in the Italian rationalist style. The “theater machine” is particularly unusual the original idea was that in summertime a steel portable theater with stage and wings and a thousand seats can be installed inside the ruins of the 19th century opera house, which had been destroyed in World War II. It has its own stage equipment and technology for reproducing the acoustics of a traditional opera house. When performances are not taking place, the “machine” was meant to turn back into a public square and gathering place. The is a mixture of modern technique and technology with the massive stone look of the city’s old walls.

The extension of the in is next to the original library, a monument of designed by , which had been expanded several times. Piano extensively renovated the existing structures and a built a new building the same height as the historic building, with a simple rectangular facade that complemented it. He also added a five-metre cube as a small exhibit space, an underground auditorium with 199 seats, and a glass-walled atrium which united all the parts, old and new. The architecture critic of the New York Times, Nicolai Ouroussoff, wrote, “the result is a space with the weight of history and the lightness of clouds…a sublime expression of the architect’s preoccupation with light.”
