In America: An Anthology Of Fashion

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City

In America: An Anthology of Fashion is the 2022 high fashionart exhibition of the Anna Wintour Costume Center, a wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art which houses the collection of the Costume Institute. It is the second portion, after In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, of a two-part exhibition on fashion in the United States.

The Dance Class & Little Dancer

You may have seen photos of The Dance Class in your school textbooks. This famous portrait at The Metropolitan Museum depicts a group of ballerinas alongside their mothers, awaiting the completion of a ballerinas examination while the instructor watches.

The ballerinas are housed in the old Paris Opéra which burned down a year before the painting was complete. This painting, and its companion piece housed at the Musée dOrsay, are considered Edgar Degas most ambitious works on the theme of ballet.

Not only was Edgar Degas a talented painter, but he was also a remarkable sculptor. Youll find a beautiful statue of a ballerina called Little Dancer of Fourteen Years in the same room as The Dance Class. Take some time to admire the sculpture because the facial expression is fascinating.

Self Portrait With Straw Hat

Vincent Van Gogh | 1887 | Oil on Canvas | Gallery 825

Van Gogh painted over twenty self-portraits of himself! Dont be so fast to judge him as the biggest narcissist on the planet, however. Many artists used themselves as models to practice on since models were quite expensive.

A classic example of Van Goghs gifts of color and expression, this painting is deceptively simple in its design. Hundreds of tiny paint strokes give the painting a moving, lively quality, and the simple contrasting color schemes allow the image of Van Gogh to pop off the canvas. The light palette and straw hat suggest the kind of summer days and rural subjects that were Van Goghs obsessions during his short life.

What many people dont know is that there is a different painting on the other side of the canvas. Van Gogh painted the Potato Peeler in 1885 and it shows a peasant peeling potatoes. In 1887, he turned the canvas over and painted himself in a straw hat.

I purposely bought a good enough mirror to work from myself, for want of a model.

The Denial Of Saint Peter

The Metropolitan Museum of Art to Charge $25 Admission Fee

The biblical story of Saint Peter is riddled with deceit and betrayal. Peter betrayed Jesus three times, and his denial is depicted in this famous painting by Italian painter Caravaggio. Carvaggios style is unique due to his mastery of light mixed with heavy shadows. As such, the eyes direct exactly where theyre meant to.

The profound painting evokes strong emotions and is full of symbolism. You may notice the three fingers pointing at Peter, this alludes to the three times he betrayed Jesus. You need not be an art connoisseur nor religious to appreciate this famous painting at the Met.

Digital Representation Of Collections

Beginning in 2013, the Met organized the Digital Media Department for the purpose of increasing access of the museum’s collections and resources using digital media and expanded website services. The first Chief Digital Officer Sree Sreenivasan from 2013 departed in 2016 and was replaced by Loic Tallon at the time that the department became known by its simplified designation as the Digital Department. At the start of 2017, the department began its Open Access initiative summarized on the Met’s website titled “Digital Underground” stating: “It’s been six months since The Met launched its Open Access initiative, which made available all 375,000+ images of public-domain works in The Met collection under Creative Commons Zero . During what is just the dawn of this new initiative, the responses so far have been incredible.” At that time, more than 375,000 photographic images from the museum’s archival collection were released for public domain reproduction and use both by the general public and by large public access websites such as those available at Google BigQuery.

In May 2022, the Met and the World Monuments Fund announced a collaboration of digital work for the 2024 reopening of the African, ancient American, and Oceanic art galleries. The digital project “aims to bolster the understanding of several historic sites in sub-Saharan Africa,” in particular sites that have been minimally explored by Western museums.

Department Of The Arts Of Africa Oceania And The Americas

The breadth and depth of works from Africa, Oceania, South and Central America, and Caribbean works are on full display in the Nelson A. Rockefeller wing of the museum. The expansion of this collection makes it feel relatively new compared to other portions of the museum despite the ancient nature of the ceramics, textiles, jewelry, garments, and other archeological finds on display.

That said, this wing will be undergoing renovation through 2024 to better give these gorgeous works their due. One goal, for example, is to let more natural light in to the galleries, showcasing how colorful and bold many of these artworks can be in contrast to, as one docent put it in Inside the Met, the current, more muted vibe that might evoke painful colonial tropes of “darkest Africa.”

How To Visit The Metropolitan Museum Of Art In 8 Hours

A full day within the museums walls rewards anyone with an appetite for beauty and a hunger to learn. Start with any of the recommendations above, then layer on even more for a complete survey of human creativity few, if any, other museums in the world can match.

From the Great Hall, steer to the right of the Grand Staircase to explore the art of the Byzantine world, including carved , enamel portraits the size of a postage stamp, mosaics and more. As the Middle Ages roll on in the following galleries, look out for such weird and wonderful objects as an arm reliquary from the 13th century, ivory rosary beads in the form of skulls and astonishingly tiny prayernuts, miniscule devotional scenes carved in wood .

As you approach the massive iron choir screen in gallery 305, keep right to enter the newly reimagined survey of British decorative arts , which uses top-notch examples of furniture , silver pieces and delightfulteapots from the British Isles from the 16th to 19th centuries to weave a lively cultural history. Next, a short walk takes you across the Channel to 18th-century France in the Wrightsman Galleries , which contain opulent you might even say Versailles-worthy displays of textiles, furniture, porcelain and other luxuries from the ancien régime. Finish your tour of European extravagance by relaxing on a bench in the soaring Petrie Court , where streaming sunlight dramatically dapples larger-than-life-size marble and bronze sculptures.

The Portraits By Lily Martin Spencer

Spencer was a talented painter that portrayed the reality of male-female relationships in a patriarchal society. The Met is home to one particularly fascinating collection of her paintings:

  • Young Husband: First Marketing
  • Young Wife: First Stew

These two famous paintings at the Met hang side-by-side and depict the early years of marriage in a humorous and playful way.

The husband is asked to procure groceries from the market, something he has clearly never done before. Hes embarrassed and attracts gazes from amused onlookers.

The second portrait is equally amusing and picks up where the last portrait left off. The wife attempts to make a stew from the random jumble of groceries her husband brought home . The wife wearily peels an onion while her perplexed helper looks on.

Spencer sought to illuminate the social anxiety at the time running a household efficiently and does so flawlessly.

In my opinion, these are some of the most beautiful paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Spencer was a masterful painter and these specific paintings were singled out for their technical expertise when she debuted them in 1856.

Portrait Of Gertrude Stein By Pablo Picasso

Famous American author Gertrude Stein was an early adopter of European art and would often host world-renowned European artists in her Parisian apartment. She personally befriended Pablo Picasso, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri Matisse among others.

Picassos success is often partially attributed to Steins friendship because she encouraged his craft by purchasing three of his painting while he was living in poverty. Picassos portrait of Stein is a touching affair, his adoration and respect for the subject is obvious.

The portrait of Gertrude Stein is special for two reason: Its one of Picassos final paintings during his Rose Period and Stein so cherished the portrait that she held onto it until her death.

The portrait was bequeathed to the Museum of Modern Art before being transferred to The Met. Today, its considered one of the most famous paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Study Of A Young Woman

Johannes Vermeer | 1665-1667 | Oil on Canvas | Gallery 964

Compared to Dutch powerhouse painters like Rembrandt and Franz Hals, who were already famous in their lifetime, Johannes Vermeer was not nearly as well known. His artwork became recognized only at the end of the 19th century. Outside of art circles, he remained an obscure figure until the movie Girl with a Pearl Earring starring Scarlett Johansson came out in 2003.

During his lifetime Vermeer only painted 43 known paintings, and the majority of them were sold in the town of Delft where he lived. Unfortunately, he died at the young age of 43, leaving behind a wife and a whopping 11 children! Due to the financial crisis in Holland in the early 1670s, his last few years were quite miserable.

Study of a Young Woman was not intended to be a portrait, even if a live model was used. These types of paintings were called tronies, a term no longer used which meant heads, faces or expressions. They were executed as a form of collectors items which displayed intriguing character types or exotic costumes. For example, the blue silk around the models shoulders was placed intentionally for the eyes of the buyer. This displayed the artists powers of invention and execution.

I find that the eyes of the girl in the picture pierce right into your soul. However, the innocentalmost sheepishlook on her face explains that she has no ill will towards you and is not doing it intentionally.

Self Portrait With A Straw Hat

Vincent van Goghs Self Portrait with a Straw Hat is easily one of the most famous paintings at The MET, as evidenced by the crowds.

Van Gogh was notoriously poor and produced more than twenty self-portraits during his time in Paris. The reason? He hoped to perfect his skills as a portrait painter and used himself as a model because the price was right.

I purposely bought a good enough mirror to work from myself, for want of a model.

Vincent Van Gogh

Take your time admiring this famous painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art before walking around to the other side. On the reverse side youll find The Potato Peeler, a painting done during van Goghs studies of peasants. Unlike Self Portrait with a Straw Hat, The Potato Peeler dons dark and heavy tones and feels dispirited.

You might be wondering why theres two painting on one frame, right? Well, van Gogh was so broke that he re-used frames. It might be hard to believe this now, but van Gogh wasnt appreciated in his lifetime and died poor. If only he could know what would happen to his art!
