Arkansas Sightseeing: Museum Of Discovery Opens To Curious Children

Arkansas Museum of Discovery, Little Rock

First came the pandemic. Then followed the flood. That one-two punch of disasters kept Little Rock’s Museum of Discovery closed for a total of 40 weeks before the popular family attraction managed a buoyant second reopening last month.

An Aug. 28 visit found a mix of families enjoying the two levels of exhibits. The hands-on activities, some old and others new, offer a blend of facts and fun. That one-two combination has earned the site a ranking by USA Today readers as the nation’s sixth best children’s museum.

Familiar displays getting lots of action included Whoosh, where youngsters propelled scarves through pneumatic tubes Amazing You, a series of interactive panels about the human body and Room to Grow, an assortment of hands-on activities for youngsters 6 and younger.

Among newly installed activities, Land the Shuttle was busy with children landing a miniature version of the space vehicle. Other freshly installed exhibits include Mystery of the Mayan Medallion, Magnificent Me and How People Make Things.

“It was truly joyous to welcome our public guests back to the museum,” says Chief Executive Officer Kelley Bass. “While we must wait for some new exhibits to be designed and built, we are back to something more normal than anything we’ve felt in 18 months. And we are positioned to be an even better museum than we were.”

Pipe Bursts At Little Rock’s Museum Of Discovery

The Museum of Discovery in Little Rock flooded Thursday morning after a pipe broke, killing one of the museums animals and causing extensive damage, according to a museum news release.

The flooding killed a blue-tongued skink lizard, one of the many animals that call the science and technology museum home. Other animals at the museum have been moved off-site where museum staff will continue to care for them, according to the release.

Officials said flooding from the burst pipe also damaged the museums galleries, theaters and offices.

The museum, located in Little Rocks River Market District, is closed while staff members work with an insurance provider and a disaster restoration company on a timeline for repairs.

Although this situation is a setback, especially after a challenging 2020, we remain committed to our mission of igniting and fueling a passion for science, technology, engineering, arts and math through dynamic, interactive experiences, Kendall Thornton, chief marketing officer for the museum, said in a statement.

Arkansas Museum Of Discovery

Arkansas Museum of Discovery, Little Rock

For the last 80 years, the Museum of Discovery in Little Rock has served central Arkansas as a combination natural history, cultural history, and science museum. Recently, the staff and Board of Trustees decided to re-invent the Museum of Discovery as an interactive museum focusing on science, technology, and math. MOD came to the Science Museum of Minnesota to develop an exhibit master plan that could both serve as a guide for the future and help MOD prepare capital funding plans. Over the course of four months, the Science Museum worked closely with MOD staff and Board members to fashion a thoughtful and practical plan that builds on MOD’s strengths, while also drawing on the treasure trove of great interactive experiences that already exist in the science museum field to seed the renovated museum.
