Potential Development Of Land Near Museum Of The Rockies In Early Stages

Dinosaur Evolution (Grades 6 12)

A Bozeman developer is in the early stages of crafting a development proposal for a 1-acre parcel near the Museum of the Rockies.

The piece of land at 2303 South Third Ave. is south of the museum property, near Overbrook Drive and Westridge Drive.

No firm development plans have been submitted to the city, but senior planner Tom Rogers said during a Planning Board meeting Monday that the city did review an informal application.

While looking that over, Rogers said city staff noticed that the land was incorrectly labeled in the citys future land use map, which lays out what sort of use the city would like to see land become if it redevelops.

The parcel was incorrectly labeled as public institutions, which is used to classify land owned by a public entity like Montana State University.

The problem is that the parcel isnt owned by MSU or any other public institution. It is privately owned and contains one home that is over 100 years old.

The Planning Board at its last ever meeting before it is regrouped into a superboard under the citys board consolidation process voted unanimously to approve a growth policy amendment changing the future land use designation of the land to urban neighborhood, which encompasses a number of different zoning districts.

The city commission plans take up the matter at its Dec. 7 meeting.

Rogers said city staff is still reviewing that application and it has not been put on the calendar for public review.

How Do I Use My Complimentary Museum Pass

Museum of the Rockies distributes a limited number of complimentary admission passes each year to staff, volunteers, business members, regional non-profits to support their fundraising efforts, and for marketing or public relations campaigns.

New Complimentary Admission Pass PolicyOn June 3, 2020, Museum of the Rockies implemented a new complimentary museum pass policy. This policy allows MOR to comply with complimentary admission pass financial tracking control measures and forgery prevention measures.

  • These new passes have an alpha/numeric tracking barcode and a designated expiration date.
  • To redeem, please give your complimentary admission pass to the front desk upon arrival. An online reservation cannot be made using a complimentary admission pass, so please use it on a walk-in basis.
  • If a new pass is lost, the previously issued pass will be voided, and a replacement pass will be issued from the marketing or membership department. Please allow up to five business days for this replacement pass to be issued.
  • Please make plans to use your complimentary museum pass before it expires. Once expired, MOR will no longer accept the complimentary admission pass. Expired passes will not be exchanged for new admission passes.

Parcel Near Museum Of The Rockies Clears Early Hurdle For Redevelopment

City commissioners voted to correct a mistake in Bozemans land use map this week to allow for the redevelopment of a site near the Museum of the Rockies.

A 1-acre residential property at 2303 South Third Ave., just south of the museum, was incorrectly designated as public institution land for years under the citys future land use map, which lays out what sort of use the city would like to see land become if it redevelops.

The mistake wasnt caught until a developer came to the city to start the redevelopment process, senior city planner Tom Rogers said during a city commission meeting this week.

Commissioners approved changing the parcels designation from public lands and institutions to urban neighborhoods.

This is a first step in a series of steps … to allow for development in the future, Rogers said.

The property is near Overbrook Drive and Westridge Drive and contains one home. It borders homes to the south and west and South Third Ave. to the east. To the north is a residential property that is owned by the museum.

The next step is an annexation and zone map amendment application. Rogers said the developers are applying for R-3 zoning, which is medium density residential.

Were just trying to correct the map so that we can ask for a potential more dense usage or different usage down the road, Morice said during this weeks commission meeting.

Curatorial Center For The Humanities

On April 28, 2016, the museum broke ground on a new $4 million, 20,000-square-foot Curatorial Center for the Humanities . The new building will provide storage and curatorial space for the museum’s humanities collection, which includes art, archaeological, historic, Native American, and photographic items. About 13,000 square feet of the building will be devoted to storage space, with the remaining 7,000 square feet containing office and work space. Private donations paid for the entire cost of the structure, which meant that no state funds were used. Slate Architecture of Helena designed the structure. Bill Walker was the lead architect. Civil and structural engineering, as well as planning for the electrical system, mechanical system, and plumbing were provided by Morrison Maierle, Inc., of Bozeman. The general contractor was Jackson Contractor Group of Bozeman.

Curators at MOR began cataloging all the humanities items in storage in 2015.

Construction on the building is expected to be complete June 2017. Humanities items currently on display and in storage will then be taken to the CCH for conservation and restoration. Moving the items is expected to take another year.

MOR officials said that the history hall exhibits will be completely revamped after the move to the CCH is completed.

Family Events & Programs

Research has shown that the younger children are when they are first exposed to science, the better thinkers they will become as they mature. One of the best predictors of if adults will visit museums is whether they were taken to a museum as a child . Thus family visits represent the future for museums. With this in mind, the museum offers a variety of family programming to children of all ages about science, culture, and history as we strive to promote lifelong learning.

Hager Auditorium At Museum Of The Rockies

The Hager Auditorium is located in the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, and serves our community with a wide range of functions including presentations, talks, performances and events. The previous sound system pictured at the bottom of this post required nine bulky and inefficient analog devices. They filled the 6 tall equipment rack located in the control room at the rear of the theater. These nine analog devices were replaced with a single 3.5 tall piece of gear. The new device provides audio signal routing, and digital signal processing and management. Mixing and control of the system is controlled by two wired touch screens and a floating wireless tablet. The floating tablet allows untethered control of the sound system from any location in the theater.
