New Yorks Museum Of Arts And Design Puts Craft Front And Center

Uncovering historical works from its permanent collection, the museum seeks to capture the zeitgeist of the contemporary craft revival.

Pitter-PodderMuseum of Arts and Design, New York gift of Johnson Wax Company, through the American Craft Council, 1977

Featured in a slew of recent gallery and museum exhibitions, not to mention a crop of newly dedicated fairs and festivals, craft is having a moment. Beyond the feeble marketing campaigns of lifestyle brands that have co-opted the term, this pre- and post-industrial approach to production has reemerged on every level of the art and design world.

Consumers are becoming increasingly concerned with how their products are made, both in response to the looming climate emergency and their growing awareness of the long-term health impact of certain materials and chemicals. Independent makers have seized the occasion to implement business models that champion transparency and small-scale, slow, closed-looped production. This robust revival might not yet fulfill the hopes and dreams of late-nineteenth-century anti-industrialists like William Morris and John Ruskin, but the push for honest, craft-led design is gaining traction.

This 1963 Building By Architect Edward Durell Stone Was Converted Into A Modern Museum Space Led By Allied Works

The Museum of Arts and Design serves as a center for the collection, preservation, study, and display of contemporary hand-made objects. Having outgrown its former location on 53rd Street in Manhattan, the Museum hired Allied Works Architecture to renovate an existing building at 2 Columbus Circle. Allied Works hired Handel Architects to assist in all phases of design and design documentation, and the Museum officially moved into the new space in 2008.

The central challenge of the project was to serve the needs and aspirations of the new institution while maintaining the presence of the existing Edward Durell Stone building. The design features a series of cuts through the structural concrete shell of the building, admitting light and views to the gallery spaces. These cuts organize the circulation and guide the visitors through the sequence of exhibit spaces while reconnecting the museum with Columbus Circle, Central Park and the city beyond.

The Fisher Dollhouse was conceived by New York collector, maker, and arts patron Joanna Fisher in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Being housebound and separated from her loved ones, Fisher chose not to let the experience tear her down. Instead, she embraced it, using the exhibitas a form of therapy and safe haven to cope with the stresses of quarantine. For Fisher, the dollhouse represents a place people can go to in their minds an emotional home I found within myself.

    Museum Of Art And Design

Hi, how big is this museum and how long would we need to do it justice? Coming in September with my 21 year old daughter, she has just graduated as a graphic designer and would love this place. Thinking of combining it with a trip to Central Park as I think they are close. Thanks.

Depends on the exhibit but 2-3 hrs. should be enough and maybe less. Their restaurant, Robert, has a great view of Central Park. You might also like the Cooper Hewitt Museum.

New York design museum connected with our Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C.

Thanks guys. Just quickly checked out the Cooper Hewitt Museum. Looks great for us as well. Is it possible to walk from MAD to here through Central Park or is it too far? Only starting my planning now and haven’t quite got my bearings yet! First trip to NYC for both of us!

Type the trip at top. Select the person icon for walking and you’ll get estimated distance, time and a route.

Nywhiz, thanks. Just done that. It’s 2 miles and a 40 minute walk. We might do this but at a more leisurely pace as we want to spend a couple of hours in the park exploring anyway. Well that’s one day sorted! Might finish it off with either ESB or TOTR.

If you started at the Cooper Hewitt, it would be easy to get an M86 bus on Fifth & 86th heading West, and go across town through the Park. Get off at Central Park West and then take a subway downtown to Columbus Circle, where the MAD is.
