Grimshaw is pleased to announce the opening of the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Miami, Florida. This exciting new 250,000 square foot facility brings together an aquarium, planetarium and science museum onto one campus in downtown Miamis Museum Park.

Taking advantage of the citys plentiful sunshine, ocean breezes from nearby Biscayne Bay and views to a growing downtown skyline, the inventive architecture of the museum furthers Miami-Dade Countys cultural offerings in a sophisticated, contemporary building.

To echo the sentiments of many in the community, it has been a privilege to have been part of this journey, said Grimshaw Partner Vincent Chang, bringing science and true contemplation of the world around us into the heart of vibrant, ever-changing downtown Miami.

Grimshaws response to the project brief resulted in a complex of four buildings situated in an open-armed stance, inviting visitors to walk amongst them and opening up the building to the outdoors.

Theensemble is united by a soft white colour palette expressed through a variety of materials that create unique patterns and shadowsacross the building facades. The bar-shaped buildings of the North and West Wings are clad in a faceted, pixelated geometricaltexture that allows the passage of the sun to animate the buildings across daylight hours.

What Are Frost Dates

A frost date is the average date of the last light freeze in spring or the first light freeze in fall.

The classification of freeze temperatures is based on their effect on plants:

  • Light freeze: 29° to 32°F tender plants are killed.
  • Moderate freeze: 25° to 28°F widely destructive to most vegetation.
  • Severe freeze: 24°F and colderheavy damage to most garden plants.

Note that frost dates are only an estimate based on historical climate data and are not set in stone. The probability of a frost occurring after the spring frost date or before the fall frost date is 30%, which means that there is still a chance of frost occurring before or after the given dates!

Frost is predicted when air temperatures reach 32°F , but because it is colder closer to the ground, a frost may occur even when air temperatures are just above freezing. Always keep an eye on your local weather forecast and plan to protect tender plants accordingly. Weather, topography, and microclimates may also cause considerable variations in the occurrence of frost in your garden. Learn how to protect plants from frost.

Frost dates are calculated based on data from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information.

Achieving a high LEED rating was a major undertaking. Energy performance/calculations under LEED v2009 had to count in all plug loads for first time, and with that the aquarium infrastructure. An aquarium is very energy intensive and every effort was made to improve on its efficiency, but its intensity required that all other systems had to work extra hard and undergo additional rounds of scrutiny. The reduction of energy consumption was achieved by optimizing the envelope, mechanical and lighting design.

Frost Science, located in Museum Park in downtown Miami, is a five-story centerpiece of an expanded cultural campus. The partly open-air structure is home to science galleries, a planetarium, classrooms and an aquarium, which also features terrestrial species showcasing southern Floridas fauna and flora. It provided the institution with a new and much larger facility than their previous one in Vizcaya.

The response to the project brief and program resulted in a campus of four buildings situated in an open armed stance.

The buildings orientation and form enable constant breezes passing through, guaranteeing visitor comfort even in the hot and humid parts of the year. The entire building circulation and some key exhibit and other program spaces are in shaded, open-air spaces. This approach differed from conventional approaches and expectations that such spaces need to be interior and fully air-conditioned.

Interesting facts:

In 1944 the Province of Ontario and the University of Toronto Faculty of Forestry entered into a partnership to educate government personnel and university students. For many years the site was known as the Ranger School and later, the Ontario Forest Technical Training School. Many courses were taught to government personnel. Students from various faculties at the University came to the school each year on field trips.

In 1969, the schools curriculum of resource management was taken over by Ontarios colleges and universities. That was the first time the future of the property that would become the Frost Centre, was in doubt. In 1974, Ontario Premiere William G. Davis announced that the facility would be developed as a demonstration area in resources management, education and recreation and would be called The Leslie M. Frost Natural Resources Centre. The Centre became the first outdoor education Centre in the province dedicated to environmental and resource management education. It was also the first Centre to have a large crown land management unit , associated with it for research in and demonstration of resource management, recreation and public education.

Descending down from the Royal Caribbean Vista level youll find yourself moving deeper into the aquarium tanks you just viewed from above. The third level, The Dive, includes dozens of small aquariums showcasing fish from around Florida and the world, including invasive species like the lionfish. Theres even a Pacific coldwater tank with a little red octopus.

Drop down another level and youre in The Deep, where the light fades away and you meet deep-sea creatures youd never see at diveable depths. Its also home to two of the museums more memorable experiences the immersive virtual gulf stream and the Insta-famous Oculus.

No exhibit at the Frost Science Museum is more thought-provoking as Feathers to the Stars, a look at how birds evolved to fly, and how humans used that evolution to propel ourselves into the sky. Inside youll be met with a 30-foot Yutyrannus huali, a feathered dinosaur that ultimately learned to fly. Youll also see life-sized airplanes suspended from the ceiling, and have the chance to land a spaceship on Mars as part of the exhibits space section.

Once you understand that story arc, the emergent evolution of flight of animals from dinosaurs to birds, then the evolution of flight from the Wright Brothers to the moon, its pretty cool, says Dehart. Its probably my second favorite.

Observation Deck And The Sun Spot

Because most journeys within the Frost Science Museum start at the fourth floor Royal Caribbean Vista, few people ever visit the museums lush rooftop. But take the elevators up to floor six and youll be met with a terrace filled with native Florida beach plants, and a look at how solar energy is harnessed to help power the museum. Youll find a good dose of Florida sunshine, so if youre planning to spend some time up here, pack some sunscreen.

It was originally part of our being a LEED certified building, says Uricchio. But its all the native beach plants from right on the water, and we want people to see that they can have a really beautiful landscape using native plants that are more efficient.

Hidden behind some nondescript doors on the museums seldom-visited fifth floor, youll find a sort of coral-incubation lab called the Wet Lab. Here, real-life scientists are working to restore 40 genotypes of coral, raising smaller specimens in tanks to hopefully replenish the dying reefs off Floridas coast. Its kind of like the Noahs Ark of Pillar Coral, Dehart says with pride. While its not advertised as one of the museums main exhibits, it is open to anyone who pays admission.
