Cleveland Museum Of Art Receives Gift Of $100m Worth Of Art From Joseph And Nancy Keithley

The Cleveland Museum of Art announces art donation valued over $100 million

CLEVELAND, Ohio The Cleveland Museum of Art announced it has received one of the biggest individual gifts in its history, a collection of more than 100 modern European and American paintings, prints and drawings, plus Chinese and Japanese works, valued at more than $100 million.

The collection, assembled over the past 20 years by Clevelanders Joseph and Nancy Keithley, is the biggest single donation in monetary value since the 1958 bequest of $34 million by Leonard C. Hanna, Jr., worth $306 million in 2020 dollars.

The gift represents a major step toward reaching the museums goal of adding $1 billion worth of art to its collection by 2027, outlined in its 2017 strategic plan.

In a single stroke, the Keithley collection provides significant depth to a collection that previously covered the evolution of late 19th- and early 20th-century avant-garde styles with strong individual works, but in many cases without multiple examples.

Its transformative, museum Director William Griswold said Tuesday at the museum. When you think about what it does for us, its kind of extraordinary.

Heather Lemonedes, the museums chief curator, said the new gifts will enable the museum to borrow a wider variety of early modern works from other museums, and to expand the breadth of exhibitions.

Legacy Society Member Spotlight: Jeromes Make A Gift By Bequest

Cheryl and David Jerome both grew up in Northeastern Ohio and have been involved with the CMA since the 1990s. Over the years we both started attending more lectures and programs by the curators and staff, which enabled us to expand our knowledge of and appreciation for art, Cheryl says. It has broadened our understanding of art and art history. After lengthy careers in business, we wanted to do something different when we retired to expand our mindsspecifically to learn about and appreciate art.

To ensure that their support of the CMA continues beyond their lifetimes, the Jeromes have made a bequest in their will to support the long-term vitality of the museum. We believe that it is important to support organizations that contribute to the quality of life in Northeastern Ohio, David says. The Cleveland Museum of Art is clearly one of those leading organizations.

Cheryl and David also enjoy attending special benefits. The first one we attended was the A Night of Knights in 1996, Cheryl recalls. Although a sudden storm damaged the outdoor dining area, dinner was turned into hors doeuvres followed by dancing in the Armor Court. The 2016 Centennial Gala was a glorious benefit. Finally, we thoroughly enjoy all the special exhibitions. We have attended so many of them over the past 20 years.

Reconstructing Krishna: Divinity On Display In Three Dimensions

The 1,500-year-old sandstone sculpture Krishna Lifting Mount Govardhan originally presided over a sacred cave in Phnom Da, Cambodia. It told part of the epic story of the Hindu god holding up the mountain to protect people from floods in the surrounding river delta.

Centuries of upheaval led to the statue repeatedly changing hands and relocating around the globe. Since the 1970s, the Krishna has resided in the Cleveland Museum of Art . Other antiquities from Phnom Da are found from Asia to Europe.

Now, for the first time in millennia, the story is being retold in the CMAs new exhibition, Revealing Krishna: Journey to Cambodias Sacred Mountain. The exhibition features an immersive, mixed reality HoloLens 2 tour that contextualizes the story of the sculpture on the Southern Cambodian floodplains and inside the mountain cave. It follows the Krishnas journey to Brussels and on to Cleveland, showing how the sculpture itself changed over time.

A decade ago, Dr. Sonya Rhie Mace, CMAs curator of Indian and Southeast Asian Art, and Cambodian museum officials saw the chance to bring Phnom Das story of Krishna Lifting Mount Govardhan back to life. They knew it would be no easy undertaking.

Most of the remaining statues are too fragile to travel between museums. Therefore, the challenge was to design an innovative format for the exhibition that recombines the disparate parts of the story through both physical and digital elements.
