Songs That Shaped Rock And Roll

Hall of Fame museum curator James Henke, along with “the museum’s curatorial staff and numerous rock critics and music experts”, created an unordered list of “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll”. The list is part of a permanent exhibit at the museum, and was envisioned as part of the museum from its opening in 1995. It contains songs recorded from the 1920s through the 1990s. The oldest song on the list is “Wabash Cannonball“, written circa 1882 and credited to J. A. Roff. Since then, however, an additional 160 songs have been added, and the list is now simply referred to as “The Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll”. The most recent songs on the list are Gnarls Barkley‘s “Crazy” and My Chemical Romance‘s “Welcome to the Black Parade“, both released in 2006. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones are the most represented on the 660-song list, with eight songs each.

Live Rock At The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame And Museum

Built on what is known as The Flats, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Cleveland is the centerpiece of the lakefront area once known for its heavy industry. With 150,000 square feet of space dedicated to a variety of music from Delta blues to rock and roll, the museum sends 40-something visitors, like my husband and I, back to the turbulent 60s when we were growing up.

You cant miss the multifaceted glass structure as you arrive at the lakefront and parking is easy to find and relatively inexpensive. The modern styling and pyramidal shape of the building is striking. What caught my eye was the 10-foot high guitar sculptures lining the sidewalks leading to the museum.

With funky designs and colors, the guitars offer the ideal spot for a Kodak Moment and prepare you for the treasures youll find inside the museum. Later, on our trip out of town, we discovered guitars strategically placed on street corners throughout the heart of the downtown area, an interesting touch.

Do Admire The Architecture Outside

Before or after your visit, be sure to spend some time in the plaza outside the museum in order to admire the Rock Halls architecture. The 150,000-square-foot building with its double pyramid and tower was designed by architect I.M. Pei, and is striking from every angle.

Fun fact: From above, the building is meant to look like a record player, with the plaza out front being the record.

For another cool vantage point, walk over to North Coast Harbor and Voinovich Bicentennial Park. You can see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame from another angle here, with one of the Cleveland script signs in the foreground.

Award For Musical Excellence

Formerly the “Sidemen” award, this category was introduced in 2000 and honors veteran session and concert players who are selected by a committee composed primarily of producers. The category was dormant from 2004 through 2007 and re-activated in 2008. This honor was renamed the “Award for Musical Excellence” in 2010. According to Joel Peresman, the president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, “This award gives us flexibility to dive into some things and recognize some people who might not ordinarily get recognized.”

Ahmet Ertegun Award For Lifetime Achievement

Formerly the “Non-Performers” award, this category encompasses those who primarily work behind the scenes in the music industry, including record label executives, songwriters, record producers, disc jockeys, concert promoters and music journalists. This category has had at least one inductee every year except 2007 and 2009. Following the death of the Hall of Fame’s co-founder Ahmet Ertegun, this award was renamed in his honor in 2008.

The Rock Hall uses multimedia very smartly in its exhibits. Many parts of the museum have short 1-3 minutes videos you can watch quickly. But there are some longer videos, too.

Some of the longer videos worth watching include:

• Power of Rock Experience Feel like youre at a rock concert as you watch highlights from past Rock Hall induction nights.
• Elvis Watch a 14-minute video about Elvis and his career.
• Dick Clarks American Bandstand This 30-minute video plays in the Forest City/RMS Theater.

Theres also a series of short videos in The Beatles exhibit, one connected to each of the bands albums. This one is my moms favorite!

Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Museum

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum is located in Cleveland, Ohio, on the shore of Lake Erie. In 1983, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was formed to create the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum. A number of cities sought the museum, but Cleveland won the competition. More than 600,000 people signed a petition asking that the museum be located in Cleveland. In addition to this enormous fan support, Cleveland also was the home of Alan Freed. Freed was the radio disc jockey credited with inventing the term “Rock and Roll.” The museum opened on September 2, 1995, in a building designed by architect I.M. Pei.

The museum honors all aspects of Rock and Roll. The museum also honors inductees to the Hall of Fame. People are inducted into the Hall of fame in one of four categories: Performers, Non-Performers, Early Influences, and Side-men. To be inducted into the Hall of Fame, a person must be affiliated in some way with Rock and Roll. He or she does not have to be a singer or a musician. If the person is a performer, he or she is not eligible for induction until twenty-five years after his or her first album was released. The first inductees into the Hall of Fame were Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis Presley.

Cleveland + Rock And Roll

Cleveland, you ask? Really? Why yes! It was here in Cleveland in the 1950s that the term rock and roll was coined by local disc jockey Alan Freed.

Freed was known for playing and promoting a mix of jazz, pop, and rhythm and blues music music that he began calling rock and roll on his Moondog Rock and Roll Radio Hour. Along with record store owner Leo Mintz , Freed introduced a generation to a new kind of music.

The very first rock concert, the Moondog Coronation Ball, was held in Cleveland in 1952, and the city became an important tour stop for countless musical acts The Beatles played in Cleveland in 1964, and David Bowie and his band, the Spiders from Mars, kicked off their very first US tour in Cleveland in 1972.

It was because of all this rock history that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation ultimately chose Cleveland over other cities like New York, San Francisco, Memphis, and Chicago as the home for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum.

Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Foundation

The RRHOF Foundation was established in 1983 by Ahmet Ertegun, who assembled a team that included Rolling Stone publisher , record executives Seymour Stein, Bob Krasnow, and Noreen Woods, and attorneys Allen Grubman and Suzan Evans. The Foundation began inducting artists in 1986, but the Hall of Fame still had no home. The search committee considered several cities, including Philadelphia ” rel=”nofollow”> Bill Haley and American Bandstand), Memphis , Detroit , Cincinnati ” rel=”nofollow”> King Records), New York City, and Cleveland.

Cleveland lobbied for the museum, with civic leaders in Cleveland pledging $65 million in public money to fund the construction, and citing that WJW disc jockey Alan Freed both coined the term “rock and roll” and heavily promoted the new genreand that Cleveland was the location of Freed’s Moondog Coronation Ball, often credited as the first major rock and roll concert. Freed was also a member of the hall of fame’s inaugural class of inductees in 1986. In addition, Cleveland cited radio station WMMS, which played a key role in breaking several major acts in the U.S. during the 1970s and 1980s, including David Bowie, who began his first U.S. tour in the city, Bruce Springsteen, Roxy Music, and Rush among many others.

Dont Plan On Being Able To Visit In Just An Hour

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is HUGE its exhibition space covers 55,000 square feet over seven levels of museum. So dont think that you can just pop in for an hour and see it all.

If you want to zip through all the exhibits, youll need to allow at least 2.5-3 hours. And if you want to stop to watch some of the videos playing along the way, increase that time by at least an hour!

Do Buy Your Tickets In Advance

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame doesnt normally sell out, but its still a good idea to buy your tickets in advance so you dont have to wait in a line to do so when you arrive.

Within the next 10 years, the town grew by nearly 500 percent. The canal opening brought an influx of immigrants, the foundation of the areas labor force, and Cleveland became a shipping and industrial giant.

During the Industrial Age, the city claimed several great industrialists as residents, including John D. Rockefeller, the worlds first billionaire Jephtha Wade I, whose telegraph company evolved into the Western Union system and Sam Mather, a steel and shipping mogul.

Couple this with the derelict warehouses lining the waterfront and you can see how Cleveland acquired its derogatory nickname. Luckily, a massive cleanup of the waterways and astute city planning in the late 20th century attracted new enterprises and created jobs, lead to a renaissance in the city.

Renovation of empty warehouses along both banks of the Cuyahoga River resulted in a premier entertainment district filled with unique shops and restaurants. Yet without a doubt, the main attraction in this port city is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
