Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum Tour

Founding And First Single Release

We’re going on a UK/EU Tour.

Michael C. Hall, Matt Katz-Bohen, and Peter Yanowitz formed Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum after years of mutual friendship and group jam sessions. They met during Hall’s stint as Hedwig in the Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, wherein Yanowitz performed as Schlatko and Katz-Bohen was the substitute music director. However, Katz-Bohen and Yanowitz had known one another for years prior, as both were heavily involved in the New York City music scene. Katz-Bohen even modeled in a photoshoot for Yanowitz’s band, Morningwood, with the intention to use one of the photographs for an album cover, but the endeavor fell through, which Katz-Bohen jokingly claimed was because the photos were “too sexy.”

Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum started as organically as they come, with Yanowitz even stating he felt the trio didn’t start the band, but rather “the band started us.” Katz-Bohen’s daughter originally came up with the band’s name after she was asked what her own band’s name would be when she got older. The band adopted their name with the blessing of Katz-Bohen’s daughter. Hall has stated he likes the band name because he feels it always needs to be said twice.

Filming for the music video of Come Talk to Me occurred on 18 December 2019 in New York City. Prior to its release, the audio for the song could be found in full in the middle of episode 27 of the Eastside Punks podcast, which featured keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen as a guest.

Michael C Hall’s Band Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum Talk Debut Album Winter Tour

Even in a year where so many of us turned to music streaming services for peace of mind and connection, it can be hard to keep up with all the new releases out there. Inevitably, there are worthwhile albums that are true hidden gems, waiting to be discovered like New York City trio Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum‘s pristine debut record, Thanks for Coming, out now. Drawing on influence from the glam, experimental and ambient music of David Bowie, ’80s new wave dance, and contemporary electronica, there’s an atmospheric art felt in the band’s music that leaves you in an ethereal and reflective state of mind. Made up of vocalist, Michael C. Hall best known for his role as Dexter Morgan in Showtime‘s Dexter and instrumentalists Peter Yanowitz and Matt Katz-Bohen , the band first met when Hall led the 2014 Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Itch. Fast becoming friends and sharing a common love for genre-bending music, the three have merged their talents for Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum.

Ready to head out on the road with their 14-track record beaming with a blinding existential vision of immaculately expressive songwriting against moody, spacious backdrops of subtle drums and low bass, Hall, Yanowitz and Katz-Bohen, tell PopCulture.com exclusively that with their album being avant-garde and ideal for every mood, they enjoy the challenge of testing themselves genre-wise.

Spotlight: Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum

Its the most surprising development, Michael C. Hall says of the surreal feeling of finding himself in a band at the age of 50. The actor, best known for his work on Six Feet Under and Dexter, wasnt looking to become one of those celebs-turned-rock stars when he created Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum with drummer Peter Yanowitz and keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen. But, the connection seemed serendipitous when Hall and Yanowitz met during a Broadway run of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

I didnt make a decision to pursue it, Hall adds, speaking over Zoom with Yanowitz and Katz-Bohen. As it did for all three of us, the band just found me. Ive always, since I was a little kid, done a good amount of singing and been a fan of all kinds of music, but it just never happened that way. My focus was on acting and doing that. Its a completely unanticipated, surprising development for mea blessing.

Initially, the trio began writing and recording music without any real intention of forming a band. Katz-Bohen, known for his work with Blondie, and Yanowitz, who has played in The Wallflowers and Morningwood, wrote some instrumental pieces together a few years ago and didnt quite know what to do with them. I played a few of them for Mike, and he noticed there werent any vocals and kindly offered to come in and sing on it, Yanowitz remembers. It started just as casually and innocently as that.

It immediately felt like there was a space to occupy, Hall adds.

Alternative music or sometimes referred to as alt-rock or simply alternative emerged from the independent music underground in the 1970s and become very popular in the 1980s. Alternative music is in reference to the genre distinction from commercial rock music. In 1988, Billboard introduced alternative music into their charts. Early versions can be found dating back to the 1960s with the Velvet Underground.

Alternative music has helped define new styles of music including indie rock, grunge and noise pop. The music tends to vary from the mainstream as it relates to social context and its sound. The breakthrough of Nirvana in the 1990s really brought alternative rock to the mainstream in music. Throughout history, alternative rock has been defined by its rejection of the commercialism of pop culture. However, ironically alt-rock has become so popular, concert ticket sales have exploded and in many cases surpassed many pop-rock artists. Grab Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum tickets now so you can experience alternative music live and in person.

American Trio Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum Are A Band Of Calibre

With an alt-rock sound that favours stripped-down synthesizers, drums and ambient electronica, Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum are a fast-rising group with a flair for theatrics and the experimental. And that makes perfect sense when you delve into this supergroups history. Comprised of frontman Michael C. Hall, drummer Peter Yanowitz and keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen, Princess was founded several years ago after the trio met whilst working on Broadways Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

And yes, those names might ring a bell. Michael C. Hall is an outstanding musical talent that has performed on Broadways Chicago and Lazarus to name a few. Alongside this, hes also renowned for his TV and film work, most notably for his roles in Dexter and Six Feet Under. Peter Yanowitz is a versatile musician who was a founding member of The Wallflowers, Morningwood, and has shared the stage with artists such as Natalie Merchant, Yoko Ono and countless others. Finally, the effortlessly cool Matt Katz-Bohen has spent the last decade touring with Blondie and has worked with Boy George and Cyndi Lauper. So yes, this trio has some pretty big strings to its bow.

Hi guys, your full length debut album, THANKS FOR COMING, dropped earlier this year. What were the biggest challenges you faced when making it?

Thats great to hear, it must be nice for you all to have this collective project that youre all completely passionate about.
