Inside Mallard The World’s Fastest Steam Locomotive

Holiday model train display at National Museum of Transportation

Curator Bob Gwynne tells the story of Mallard, an innovative locomotive whose greatest claim to fame is the top speed it achieved on an infamous run down Stoke Bank on the East Coast Main Line. Hitting 126mph made it the world’s fastest steam-powered locomotive, a title it still holds today. Join Bob as he shows you aroundand insideone of the stars of our collection which is enduringly popular with our visitors thanks to its beautiful design and striking Garter Blue colour scheme. Bob also tells us what it was like trying to achieve a world speed record in a steam locomotive, which is not the most straightforward of tasks. Christmas Memories II Holiday Train Card.

On this first Saturday in December Ive got Christmas and Trains on my mind. There are three more weekends until Christmas. Earlier today seeing the new Murder On The Orient Express movie was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. Kenneth Branagh has done a fantastic job with not only starring in the Agatha Christie classic but also directing it. Im so happy to be reading there will be a sequel to it with Death on the Nile.

Earlier this week Hallmark was showing their movie adaptation of The Christmas Train. Joining the movie mid-way it took a few minutes for me to realize I had read the book by David Baldacci when it first came out!

Newly redisplayed and lit Rocket on display at the National Railway Museum. Now appreciated as the world treasure it truly is.

Robert Stephensons 0-2-2 locomotive Rocket from the Science Museum Group Collection.

Manufactured in 1829 by Robert Stephenson and Company in Newcastle, close to todays Newcastle Central railway station, Rocket won the famous Rainhill Trials to become the fastest locomotive of its time thanks to its innovative design.

This 3D model of Rocket was produced using 22 high resolution LIDAR scans and over 2,500 detailed photographs taken in May 2018. More information on how the Science Museum Group worked with ScanLAB to create the model can be found in the Science Museum Group Digital Lab website.

“There have been at least nine full size replicas of Rocket, including one commissioned by Henry Ford and now on display in the Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn, Michigan, USA. But only the National Railway Museum has the original, now on display at York, together with two of the replicas. One is a working locomotive that steams from time to time, while another is partly sectioned to show how the locomotive worked”

At one stage in the visit a technician started to explain what a piece of new equipment did and HRH interrupted him and said ‘oh yes – I saw this last year when I opened Preston SignalBox].

    We were all suitably impressed!!

Bob Reid was GM and we had lunch with the Duke in the Charing Cross Hotel. He had chosen the menu with asparagus as the starter. Obviously we waited for him to start and were amused when he just picked up a stick with his fingers, dipped it into the ramekin of melted butter, and then into his mouth.

    A memorable day.

Frank joined the railways straight from school as a junior clerk and ended up in charge of a third of them. He ran the network stretching over 18 counties from the Thames to the Tweed from his York headquarters. The two most significant accomplishments during Frank’s time in charge were the introduction of the high speed train, the 125 and the electrification of the East Coast main line, approved in 1984.

Frank is the President of Friends of the National Railway Museum.

    WINTER NEWSLETTER 2021

With the major changes to the UKs Red List on 4th October 2021, we were finally able to make plans for a visit to Sierra Leone and managed to get flights with Air France at a reasonable affordable price, provided we returned to the UK before the end of November . Travel was somewhat more complicated this year, given the extraf rom-filling and Covid19 testing that had to be completed, but nevertheless we were excited to get there again after almost two years!

For the return trip, we paid the premium price for our Covid19 PCR tests, which meant that the health worker visited us at home to take the swab and our results were uploaded in less than 48 hours. The efficiency of this service meant that we were relieved of the stress of wondering whether our results would be available before we were due to fly.

All of these precautions have clearly paid off, since the incidence of Covid19 has remained extremely low in Sierra Leone, and almost all restrictions have now been removed. However, vaccination take-up is still relatively low as many people are suspicious of the side-effects and afraid of being made sick.

What Our Visitors Are Saying About Their Experience

Good news: Warhawk Air Museum celebrates veterans, holiday card contest
    • So much fun for our little boys! They love riding the trains and they have so many old restored trains. Some of their restoration jobs are fantastic and really capture the feel of the height of rail travel. I dont know of any other place quite like this. Its a great educational experience even if you dont love trains.

      Andrew Ryan

    • The largest railway museum in the USA and they run demonstrations of many working trains. The trains vary from 1800s steam engines to the recently retired CTA Red Line trains. They have old Pullman cars which are nicely displayed.

      Lenore Ettinger

    • The IRM is a fantastic place. The Thomas The Train is a wonderful time of course, but you MUST visit and see all the amazing Steam, Diesel and Electric Streetcars on display, being restored and running. When you ride an electric streetcar, you have to wonder why they are not still used! With the same capacity as a modern bus and with no vehicle emissions, they are just great. The Illinois Railway Museum is a Must See.
