Natural History Museum Of Los Angeles County Tours And Tickets

The NHM Experience

While its best known for its movie stars, one of the City of Angels most elegant attractions is this gorgeous 1913 Beaux Arts palace. Like a smaller, west coast version of New Yorks American Museum of Natural History, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County contains a microcosm of the whole world, both indoors and out in the Southern California sunshine.

Highlights of the museum are an enormous Dinosaur Hall full of sea monster fossils and T. Rex skeletons, three halls worth of amazingly realistic wildlife habitat dioramas , and a 150,000-specimen Gem and Mineral Hall full of gold, diamonds and other sparkly distractions. But be sure not to miss the soaring Rotunda at the center of the building, with its intricate stained glass dome, graceful bronze statues, and colorful paintings by artist Charles R. Knight, which illustrate mid-20th-century scientists findings about the prehistoric world.

Youll rarely see a bigger collection of stuffed animals or a more opulent collection of pre-Columbian treasures. Try to avoid eye contact with the tarantula in the Insect Zoo, but seek out a unique collection of Zuni fetishes these tiny stone, bone and antler carvings found in a glass case by the ground floor stairs were made by the Zuni people, a Native American tribe from New Mexico.

In the grand halls, the blue T-shirted cohorts explored the world of dinosaurs and discovered where on Earth paleontologists and amateurs found their fossilized bones. Scientists popped by to reveal to the kids how these remnants of life can help them understand how those giant ancient land animalsas well as ancient sea creatures, mammoths, and saber-toothed catslived. The kids studied the bios of their present-day urban neighbors: bats, insects, and snails, and met some of those critters in the six-acre green space that encircles NHM. The children dove into prehistoric L.A.s underwater past, saw insects preserved perfectly in amber , and learned how mammoths have been discovered frozen in glaciers. Campers got firsthand intel from an entomologist, too, about why the butterflies fluttering in the nearby Pavilion were so busy.

Try To Imagine The Smallest Animal Youve Ever Seen With The Naked Eye Got It Okay What Does Its Mouth Look Like

Ophiothrix spiculata,

Head Hunting Flies

When NHMs Entomology Curator Brian Brown and Collections Manager Giar-Ann Kung were doing fieldwork in Brazil, they noticed a phorid fly in the Dohrniphora longirostrata-group was leaving some ants headless. Kung suggested the ants were being decapitated, but Brown was initially skeptical. A closer look at the flys proboscis under NHMs Scanning Electron Microscope revealed the structures that helped support Kungs observation. Getting a closer look at the proboscis exposed natures tiny saw blade.

This is a SEM of a Dohrniphora longirostrata-group collected by Dr. Brian Brown and Giar-Ann Kung in Brazil, and a close up on its proboscis. This fly uses its proboscis with that serrated appendage to cut off the heads of its prey.

When we can see more of the super small things, we get a better picture of the specimen we get a new story to share.
