Climate Change And Sea Level Rise

The City of Boston has developed a climate action plan covering carbon reduction in buildings, transportation, and energy use. Mayor Thomas Menino commissioned the city’s first Climate Action Plan in 2007, with an update released in 2011. Since then, Mayor has built upon these plans with further updates released in 2014 and 2019. As a coastal city built largely on , is of major concern to the city government. The latest version of the climate action plan anticipates between two and seven feet of sea-level rise in Boston by the end of the century. A separate initiative, Resilient Boston Harbor, lays out neighborhood-specific recommendations for coastal resilience.

Boston has teams in plus , and, as of , has won 39 championships in these leagues. It is one of eight cities to have won championships in all four major American sports leagues. It has been suggested that Boston is the new “TitleTown, USA”, as the city’s professional sports teams have won twelve championships since 2001: Patriots , Red Sox , Celtics , and Bruins . This love of sports made Boston the ‘s choice to to hold the , but the city cited financial concerns when it withdrew its bid on July 27, 2015.

Boston has teams as well, such as the ‘s . Established in 2017, they were the first team to complete a perfect stage with 0 losses.

    Hayden Planetarium Lightning Exhibit

    Boston Museum of Science

The Boston Science Museum is way more high-tech now than when I was a kid, but my three favorite exhibits are still there:

    • Watching chicks hatching right in front of your eyes. It was just as cool to see as an adult, and my one-year old thought it was fabulous!
    • The Lightning exhibit . Thought this might be a bit intense for Siena, but she was fascinated!
    • The Hayden Planetarium: After more than half a century of educating the public on the wonders of outer space, the Hayden Planetarium reopened in early 2011 after a $9 million renovation done to bring new appeal and inspiration to the next generation of Boston Science Museum visitors. The planetarium has a fancy new projector called a Zeiss Starmaster. At the time of its installation theres only one other Starmaster in operation in the U.S.

And whether you like to have your voice heard or prefer to simply sit and take it all in, the Boston Museum of Science has excellent forums and Lectures that you might want to plan into your visit. Basically, theres loads to do , so its worth scavenging their website before you go, so you dont miss out the things that interest you most!

Many older buildings in certain areas of Boston are supported by wooden piles driven into the area’s fill these piles remain sound if submerged in water, but are subject to if exposed to air for long periods.Ground water levels have been dropping in many areas of the city, due in part to an increase in the amount of rainwater discharged directly into sewers rather than absorbed by the ground. The Boston Groundwater Trust coordinates monitoring ground water levels throughout the city via a network of public and private monitoring wells. However, Boston’s drinking water supply from the and is one of the very few in the country so pure as to satisfy the Federal without filtration.

    Origin And Early Years

The museum began as the Boston Society of Natural History in 1830, founded by a collection of men who wished to share scientific interests. Their first meeting was held on February 9, 1830 with seven original members in attendance: Walter Channing, Benjamin D. Greene, George Hayward, John Ware, Edward Brooks, Amos Binney, and George B. Emerson. It was more commonly called the Boston Museum of Natural History in the 19th century, and this name occurs frequently in the literature. In 1862, after the society had gone through several temporary facilities, a building was constructed in the Back Bay area of the city and dubbed the “New England Museum of Natural History.” The museum was located next to the original Rogers Building of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , and both neoclassical structures were designed by William G. Preston. The original MIT building was demolished in 1939, but the Natural History Museum building survives today, as a home furnishings showcase.

A great deal of scientific work was done by the society, especially around geology, and the results of this work can be found in the Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History which are now freely available online. A library and children’s rooms were added to the museum around 1900. It was renamed the Museum of Science in 1939, under the directorship of Henry Bradford Washburn, Jr., a renowned American mountaineer.
