If you or your child is at all into cars, then make sure and visit the The Petersen Automotive Museum its like Disneyland for car enthusiasts. The Museum, located on Museum Row in Los Angeles, was founded in 1994 by Robert and Margie Petersen.

The Petersen is housed in a historic department store building, dating back to 1962. The Museum reopened in 2015 after a major renovation. The goal of the museum is to explore and present the history of the automobile.

Ultimate James Bond Car Collection On Display At The Petersen Museum

It all began in the third James Bond film back in 1964, with Sean Connery and a silver Aston Martin DB5 in “Goldfinger.” That pairing would cement the relationship between suave British agent 007 and sexy cars on the silver screen.

“Oh, Bond was the car guy,” said Terry Karges, executive director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

Cool wheels and cool stunts became part of the franchise. If Bond hopped into a car, you just knew there would be some action.

To celebrate James Bond’s decades of thrilling driving scenes, the Petersen Museum is showcasing the rides of 007 with “Bond in Motion” in its Mullin Grand Salon. Not just machines that lay rubber, but ones that float and fly as well.

“We’ve captured almost every vehicle that he used underwater, in the air, on a lake, in the ocean, on the roads,” noted Karges.

Indeed, this is the most comprehensive collection of screen-used Bond vehicles ever shown in the United States with some 30 cars, motorcycles, boats, and light aircraft, all gathered in a gallery worthy of a Bond movie set.

The display is heavily weighted toward Aston Martins, as their involvement with the Bond franchise is iconic. Utter the name “Aston Martin” to most people and they’ll think of James Bond.

“The Aston is still the car people remember or associate with ‘Bond cool’,” said Terry Karges.

Indeed, each significant vehicle has a large flat-screen behind or next to it, showing the appropriate scene on a continuous loop.

Bmw And The Art Of The Automobile

One of many much smaller display halls that I would discover during the visit was dedicated to BMW and there were three cars in here.

One of three BMW art cars on display, this 3.0 CSL is the first of a series of Art Cars produced over 4 decades. It was painted by American artist and sculptor Alexander Calder at the request of French race car driver and art collector Herve Poulain, who drove the car in the 1975 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Calder car became the first of 17 BMWs painted by leading artists including Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Esther Mahlangu, and Michael Nelson Tjakamarra.

This 8 Series was also given the Art Car treatment by local artist David Hockney in 1995, the 14th car to be created. Hockneys style typically depicts people within their environment, which explains his focus on turning the 850 CSi inside out. While the driver and his dog are readily apparent in this left side view of the car, other angles depict the cars intake manifold, the motion of air over its wheels and tyres, its suspension and the green landscape of the hills around his California home.

Final car in the display was this Z4 Roadster used by artist Robin Rhode in 2009 to create BMWs marketing epithet, An Expression of Joy, to help launch the second generation BMW Z4 Roadster, Rhode utilised the cars tyres to apply paint to a large canvass, as he directed a driver where to steer the vehicle.
