Whats On View At The Florida Museum Of Photographic Arts In Tampa

TAMPA Four exhibitions at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts look at a range of experiences, from portraits of local chefs to X-ray footage at the nations borders.

Chefs Special features portraits of Tampa Bay chefs and restaurant owners, a perfect exhibition for the museums community gallery. It was conceived in reaction to the pandemic, when restaurants had to shut down, then struggled to find new ways to survive. With 87 portraits shot by 48 local photographers, it crystallizes how Tampa Bays restaurant scene is integral to the community. It remains on view through April 11.

X-Ray Vision vs Invisibility is a very different examination of humanity by Noelle Mason. A professor at the University of South Florida, Mason obtained X-ray, thermal and infrared images from the U.S. border patrol, vigilantes and commercial security websites. The images of immigrants stowed away in trucks, vans and in one especially heart-wrenching instance, a suitcase, are haunting. Mason has transformed them using the blue cyanotype process. Shes also translated the images into impressive weavings and delicate embroideries. Mason seeks to instill a sense of humanity in the imagery that degrades people into shapes and objects. It remains on view through May.

About Florida Museum Of Photographic Arts

Photography is ubiquitous in contemporary life and culture. The founders of the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts recognized this fact, so they sought to create a setting where visitors from all walks of life could appreciate and experience photography. As one of the few photography museums in the country, FMoPA presents exhibitions, which exclusively use this medium to explore themes that expose some intriguing or exciting aspect of history or modern, everyday life. This focus allows the museum to prominently feature pieces that other art institutions might not necessarily show, such as works of photojournalism or historic photographs.

In addition to scheduling upcoming exhibitions, FMoPA also includes a permanent collection. The collection aims to preserve particularly important images, such as those of various masters of the medium, including Harold Edgerton, Clyde Butcher, Hans Silvester, and Berenice Abbott.

After studying the museum’s exhibitionswhich can include images culled from national and international sourcesguests can step behind the camera themselves during for students of all skill levels. Then, budding photographers can display their latest shots at 15 Minutes of Fame, a showcase where up to six presenters exhibit and discuss their original work. They also host a photography group, the Photo League, for those photographers that want to share tips and helpful hints once a month.

Time In Tampa Well Spent

This was my first visit … A friend of mine introduced me to the museum and was exhibiting one of her photographs, so that made the experience even more enjoyable and meaningful.. I was texting back and forth with her while I was there so it was like having my own private docent. There was a variety of subject matters in the exhibit … the graceful Greyhounds :), the human body, architecture, nature, etc. I think the photographers’ ability to take sometimes a common subject and photographically capture it in a way to make it a piece of art is truly a talent and a gift.. I enjoyed looking at the other two exhibits as well. I am glad to have read all of the descriptions as I probably would not have scrutinized the wallpaper to realize that was art in itself.

Images Of The New Fmopa Headquarters Exterior In The Making

The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts is moving into a new downtown Tampa location at the corner of Ashley Drive and Kennedy Boulevard .

The museum will occupy the second and third floors of the six-story building known as the “Cube” in Rivergate Tower, next to Kiley Gardens.

Trickey Jennus, a full-service advertising agency in Tampa, donated pro bono work for the FMoPA during their annual Creatathon, a project involving huge outdoor graphics that were installed this past weekend on the exterior of the building. The installation was conducted at no charge by workers from Bay Area Window Cleaning. The graphics were supplied by Fastsigns on Kennedy. The images selected cover past, present, future and permanent exhibitions.

Three New Exhibits Are Coming To The Florida Museum Of Photographic Arts

The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts is opening its fall 2021 season with three new exhibitions celebrating natural beauty, family gatherings and childhood memories.

Fall is associated with family gatherings and connecting with friends and loved ones, said FMoPAs Executive Director Zora Carrier. This fall, we invite your readers to start a new family tradition and visit FMoPA. We are bringing three exhibitions celebrating natural beauty, relationships with friends and loved ones and childhood memories.

The first exhibition, At Table by Glenna Jennings, is a series of photographs taken at tables around the world, both in homes and restaurants.

It cherishes the everyday connections we make around food, drink and culinary happenings, Carrier said.

The second show is titled The Fabric of Memory by German American artist Astrid Reischwitz.

Through combining old and new photographs, embroidery, napkins, wallpaper, cloth and other materials, Reischwitz revives her memories of growing up in a small, rural village in Northern Germany, Carrier said.

The third and final fall exhibit is Sea to Shining Sea, drawn from the museums permanent collection.

It is a collection of stunning photographs of various parts of the USA that celebrate the eclectic beauty of this country and its people, Carrier said.

In the museums upcoming exhibitions, it will continue to focus on the issues that are important to Tampa Bay and its people.

Bremner Benedict Hidden Waters / Desert Springs / Uncertain Future Bremner Benedicts project is an artistic investigation, part art, part research, into the springs of the Sonoran, Chihuahaun, Mojave, Great Basin deserts and the Colorado Plateau. The critical importance of these waters and their ecologies in the face of climate change and population pressures is under-recognized making their survival precarious. By visually interpreting the science her intent is to raise public awareness to the potential of water scarcity.

Jeff Whetstone Batture RitualJeff Whetstones photographs and videos explore the micro- and macro-economies and ecologies along the Mississippi Rivers batture near New Orleans, Louisiana. Batture is the French-creole term for the thin strip of weeds, trees, and mud between the waters edge of the Mississippi River and the tall, hardened levees that contain its floods.
