What happens when kids take over curatorial duties at David Zwirner for a day? Go behind the scenes at David Zwirner Gallery from a kids POV in the latest episode of Kidzzcast, CMAs kid-led docuseries!

Hosted by CMA Artist-Educator in Residence Ciana Malchione, this episode sees children exploring the new book Making a Great Exhibition and discovering the many colorful characters involved in making a professional art show curators, photographers, shippers, museum visitors, and more. Our young artists meet with gallery staff to learn about their roles, ask questions to the books author, Doro Globus, as well as create, curate and present their own exhibitions in response.

Digital Representation Of Collections

Beginning in 2013, the Met organized the Digital Media Department for the purpose of increasing access of the museum’s collections and resources using digital media and expanded website services. The first Chief Digital Officer Sree Sreenivasan from 2013 departed in 2016 and was replaced by Loic Tallon at the time that the department became known by its simplified designation as the Digital Department. At the start of 2017, the department began its Open Access initiative summarized on the Met’s website titled “Digital Underground” stating: “It’s been six months since The Met launched its Open Access initiative, which made available all 375,000+ images of public-domain works in The Met collection under Creative Commons Zero . During what is just the dawn of this new initiative, the responses so far have been incredible.” At that time, more than 375,000 photographic images from the museum’s archival collection were released for public domain reproduction and use both by the general public and by large public access websites such as those available at Google BigQuery.

Founded in Lower Manhattan in 1988, Childrens Museum of the Arts unique curatorial program introduces children and families to world-class contemporary art exhibitions and art-making workshops taught by professional artists. The central Cynthia C. Wainwright Gallery displays a rotating series of contemporary artwork by emerging and established artists from New York City and around the world. In addition, CMAs dual-level Bridge hosts a rotating series of interactive site-specific installations that are thematically linked to the main exhibition in the gallery.

CMAs programming consists of four distinct initiatives: thematic exhibitions of artwork by contemporary artists on-site public programming, studio workshops, and art classes taught by professional working artists school and community outreach programs that provide free art education to underserved children throughout New York City and a permanent collection of over 2,000 pieces of childrens art from around the world.

Founded in October 1988 by Kathleen Schneider, the Children’s Museum of the Arts is one of the oldest children’s art museums in the world.The Museum employs an artist-in-residence format whereby teaching artists work directly with children and their families. At CMA, children and families have access to the creative tools that promote self-expression and esteem through the visual and performing arts, honoring the artist in every child through hands-on art programs taught by trained, working artists through an on-going collection and exhibition of children’s art and through partnerships with diverse community organizations that celebrate life and the arts in New York City.

Metropolitan Museum Of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York City, colloquially “the Met“, is the largest art museum in the Western Hemisphere. Its permanent collection contains over two million works, divided among 17 curatorial departments. The main building at 1000 Fifth Avenue, along the Museum Mile on the eastern edge of Central Park on Manhattan‘s Upper East Side, is by area one of the world’s largest art museums. A much smaller second location, The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan, contains an extensive collection of art, architecture, and artifacts from medieval Europe.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 to bring art and art education to the American people. The museum’s permanent collection consists of works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, paintings, and sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art. The Met maintains extensive holdings of African, Asian, Oceanian, , and Islamic art. The museum is home to encyclopedic collections of musical instruments, costumes, and accessories, as well as antique weapons and armor from around the world. Several notable interiors, ranging from 1st-century Rome through modern American design, are installed in its galleries.

Childrens Museum Of The Arts

The Childrens Museum of the Arts in Manhattan is designed to inspire children both to make art and to learn about it a place where production and presentation of art are seamlessly integrated.

The museum is organized around a series of classic white boxes for the art studios and large central gallery. Recognizing that children also need spaces to let off steam or express their independence, these functional spaces are intertwined with a band of kid-centric spaces. These spaces are transformed into highly specific moments through a color wheel that incorporates the different programs: red kids bathrooms, an orange floor for the sink-o-rama washing station, a yellow bridge for graffiti art, a green stair-slide and ball pit, a blue upholstered quiet room, and a purple clay bar where a bartender serves modeling clay and advice to kids for claymation projects.

Slime in the carpet. Glitter on the walls. Paint on a brand new couch. These are just a few of the art-projects-gone-wild I’ve cleaned up over the years. And though I know the value in all this messy fun and creativity, sometimes I just don’t want to deal with stocking the supplies, guiding the activities, and cleaning it all up. Enter the Children’s Museum of the Arts. For my money nothing beats a trip to this creative hub. Dubbed by my arts-loving daughters as their favorite NYC museum, it’s an arts education powerhouse that doubles as an indoor playspace, making it a must-visit for NYC guests and tried-and-true boredom buster for city parents.

Located in the lively Hudson Square neighborhood, this bright, airy art space opened its current location in 2011, though parents in the know had flocked to its previous Soho space for years.

At 10,000 square feet, there’s ample room for art making, as well as a broad gallery in the heart of the museum, where works by professional artists enjoy rotating time in the spotlight. While mom and dad might like gawking at the professional pieces, the kids will be blown away by the studios stocked with supplies to ignite any imagination.

School And Community Programes

CMA’s School and Community Outreach Program reaches over 10,000 children and their families each year at schools, settlement houses and special needs facilities. Museum artist/educators meet with individual schools and community centers to plan workshops that integrate the goals and curriculum of the classroom or program. Children and teachers are encouraged to explore the arts, thereby acquiring skills that can be applied to all aspects of learning.

Thomas J Watson Library

The Thomas J. Watson Library is the central library of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and supports the activities of staff and researchers. Watson Library’s collection contains approximately 900,000 volumes, including monographs and exhibition catalogs over 11,000 periodical titles and more than 125,000 auction and sale catalogs. The Library includes a reference collection, auction and sale catalogs, a rare book collection, manuscript items, and vertical file collections. The Library is accessible to anyone 18 years of age or older simply by registering online and providing a valid photo ID.

A Temporary Inset In The Inside Art Exhibition On The 1st Floor

To commemorate the centennial of womens suffrage, and the upcoming presidential election, the installation explores what voting is and why it matters, how people effect change by working together, and the role of the president of the United States. Underlying the installation messaging is the importance of thoughtful decision-making and open-minded listening, reiterating that voting and community movements are ways we work together for the greater good.

Area 1-Your Vote Counts

Visitors vote for one of three options by placing a ballot in one of three voting cases. Topics change, and examples include: clean water for all, more parks and pools, free food at schools.

Area 2- If I Were President

Children pretend play in the Oval Office, taking calls, making decisions, and signing important documents.

Area 3- Moving Forward Together- Suffragists

Visitors explore a wall-mounted finger maze to see which suffragist they are most like, and learn more about the suffrage movement.

Area 4- Share your voice!

Visitors can create their own posters, sashes, ballots, and more! By exploring methods used by women to attain the right to vote over a century ago, we see that these same skills and tactics are still relevant today when we want to make our voices heard. Art materials and CMOM educators are available to engage visitors.
