After Nearly Six Months Of Closure The Museum Will Welcome Back Visitors

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science will reopen this weekend after nearly six months of closure since the pandemic forced its shutdown in mid-March. Following the opening weekend of Sept. 12-13, the museum will operate on a reduced schedule, welcoming visitors in groups of 10 or fewer on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The Perot will follow safety precautions that it adopted along with 50 other Dallas arts and cultural organizations in mid-July. All guests 3 years of age and older must wear a face covering, staff and signage will remind people to stay six feet apart and occupancy will be limited to 25%.

Some parts of the Perot will remain temporarily closed, including the Moody Family Childrens Museum, The Hoglund Foundation Theater and a number of interactive activities, according to a press release.

The Perot will join other downtown Dallas museums that have cracked open their doors in recent weeks. The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza reopens today, and the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas Museum of Art and Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum reopened in August. On Sept. 18, the Crow Museum of Asian Art at the University of Texas at Dallas will reopen.

But its been a bumpy road for the Perot since March 14, when the pandemic forced its closure.

It scheduled a July 9 reopening, but later scrapped that plan as COVID-19 cases spiked in Dallas County.

The Unique Texture Of Our Outer Skin

The building is made up of 656 textured precast concrete panels, totaling 69 million pounds. The design intent is to create a series of waves that gives a dynamic effect on the building that changes minute-to-minute through the day with the sunlight and shadows. The texturing is more dense at the bottom of the cube and slowly fades away as the cladding move upwards. This pattern was done intentionally to create a perception that the building dissolves into the sky.

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science, located in downtown Dallas, Texas, has to be one of the largest museums we have ever visited- and definitely one of the most fun science centers we have explored! The building is equivalent in size to a 14 story building! Plan on spending the better portion of a full day exploring this 180,000+ square foot museum filled with five floors of exhibits, although could spend days here and still not see everything. Start at the top and work your way down the floors and through 11 exhibition halls.

There are 11 different permanent exhibit halls. Here are some of our favorite exhibits from each floor:

4th Floor and Mezzanine:

• Hall of Birds has hands on experiences like creating your own virtual bird, pretending to fly like a bird on a simulator, and using utensils to try and grasp food like a bird.

• Dinosaur fun awaits you in the Life Then and Now exhibit with many touch screens, quizzes, and virtual contests. There are cool exhibits on the Ice Age in Dallas and Ocean Life in Dallas.

• Future astronauts will definitely want to spend time in the Expanding the UniverseHall, filled with touch screens, projectors, a timeline of the creation of planet Earth, and plenty of physics lessons on gravity.

• An eight minute filmloop with 3D animation gives you the feeling for what its like to journey through the solar system.

Most people in the city of Dallas are within the , the 12th-largest school district in the United States and second largest in Texas. The school district operates independently of the city and enrolls over 161,000 students. The Perot Museum of Nature and Science is housed in one of the most interesting museum buildings in the country. Opened in 2015, it is located in downtown Dallas and occupies the entirety of a city block. And block is a good description: the museum is largely a cube-shaped structure that houses some really interesting exhibits, including a lot of great prehistoric fossils.

The dinosaurs start early at the Perot Museum. In the lobby near the ticket desk is a cast skeleton of Malawisaurus, a medium-sized sauropod unearthed by Southern Methodist University researchers in 1991. Once you have your tickets, the fun journey to the fossil hall Life Then & Now can begin. I say fun journey, because there is a nice highlight on the way. As you ride the escalator up to the 4th floor, you come closer and closer to a Tyrannosaurus standing at the top of the escalator! My younger son thought it was one of the highlights of the museum. For those who have been to Universal Studios, it reminded us a little of the end of the Jurassic Park ride!
