A Chinese-American couple has donated a record $125 million to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art to renovate the space that houses its collection of modern and contemporary art, the institution said Tuesday.
The donation by Oscar Tang and his wife Agnes Hsu-Tang is the largest capital gift the Met — one of New York City’s biggest tourist attractions — has ever received in its 151-year history.
In return, the newly renovated space will bear their names, the museum said.
The injection of funds will allow the museum to carry out a long-postponed project offering a multidisciplinary “re-envisioning” of 80,000 square feet of galleries and public space that house its collection of modern and contemporary art.
“The Modern Wing will encompass a full renovation of the current modern and contemporary galleries, which The Met has been seeking to renovate for more than a decade,” the museum said.
“With this remarkable gift, Oscar and Agnes are enabling The Met to realize its ambitious mission for future generations,” said Daniel Weiss, president of the iconic museum located next to Central Park.
Tang, an 83-year-old retired financier who has acted as a trustee for the museum for three decades, has financed previous exhibitions, art acquisitions, room extensions and other expenses over the years.

Creative Commons CEO Ryan Merkley joined the Met to announce the release. The Met collection of CC0 images can be browsed on the new CC Search beta, also announced this morning.

Today, The Met has given the world a profound gift in service of its mission: the largest museum in the United States has eliminated the barriers that would otherwise prohibit access to its content, and invited the world to use, remix, and share their public domain collections widely and without restriction.

How to complete this massive project has been a question Hollein’s been wrangling ever since he got the director job in 2018. The pandemic affected the budgets of all museums across the country the Met even projected a $150 million budget shortfall last year. Even so, museum leaders sparked something of a controversy in the art world when they announced they’d be taking advantage of newly-loosened guidelines to sell some works of art to make up the money .
That decision drew some criticism even from Hollein’s predecessor, Thomas Campbell, who compared museums deaccessioning works to “crack cocaine to the addict a rapid hit, that becomes a dependency.”
Hollein responded in an interview with NPR earlier this year, saying, “I don’t think it’s a slippery slope. I think the slippery slope would rather be if we as museums would dip into our endowment, into our funds that we have operations, and diminish them because that would then have enormous effects in the long run.”
The architecture firm for the new wing will be announced in 2022.

The Museum Met With Federal Prosecutors In New York After The Investigation Detailed Links Between Antiquities It Holds And An Indicted Art Dealer
Investigators from the U.S. attorneys office met with officials of the Metropolitan Museum of Art earlier this month to discuss whether relics in the famed museums collection had been stolen from ancient sites in Cambodia.
Museum officials said that new information about some pieces in their collection spurred them to reach out to officials in the Southern District of New York. They declined to describe what facts precipitated the meeting, which occurred about two weeks ago.
The Washington Post and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists reported three weeks ago that the Met holds 12 pieces once owned or brokered by Douglas Latchford, a man prosecutors said was involved in decades of trafficking in looted artifacts. Another seven pieces at the Met came to the museum through his associates.
The reporting revealed that Latchford had created two offshore trusts that held relics. Those trusts were exposed in the Pandora Papers, a trove of more than 11.9 million financial records obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and shared with news organizations, including The Post.
In total, according to the investigation, 10 museums around the world were holding at least 43 relics that had passed through the hands of Latchford or those of his associates.
Officials with the U.S. attorneys office in the Southern District of New York declined to comment Monday.

Cambodia has begun to press the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan to document how it acquired dozens of Khmer Empire antiquities that Cambodian officials, citing new evidence, believe were looted during the countrys decades of war and tumult.
Although Cambodia has pushed the Met and other museums in recent years for the return of individual statues and sculptures it says were pillaged between 1970 and 2000, this effort is far broader. Cambodian officials said they have developed a spreadsheet of 45 highly significant items at the Met that the evidence suggests were stolen before being donated or sold to the museum.
Officials with the U.S. Attorneys Office, which has previously assisted Cambodia in recovering illicit antiquities, met with museum staff members last week to request they review the provenance of a number of the items, Cambodian officials said.
Federal officials declined to comment on any discussion with the museums staff, and the Met would not address the specifics of what Cambodian officials are describing as a rigorous new effort to reclaim their cultural heritage.

In June, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that it would be imminently returning two 16th century brass plaques, Warrior Chief and , and one 14th century brass plaque, Ife Head, to Nigeria. The items were officially repatriated during a ceremony on Monday of this week that included both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Nigerian National Commission for Museums and Monuments both organizations agreed to continue to work together on loaning projects that include artifacts from Benin that could theoretically take place in the future.
As it stands, the Met currently has around 160 items from Benin City in its collection. The objects that the museum has elected to deaccession were delivered to Abba Isa Tijani, the director general of Nigerias National Commission for Museums and Monuments. If other museums can do what the Met did, I think we would be able to give confidence to our audience, to our visitors, Tijani said during the ceremony. The issue of repatriation is now at the heart of the people. People are looking at museums, particularly in Europe, and saying: these artifacts are not legally owned, are not their own. Yet they display these objects and take all the credit.

Government officials from Cambodia are calling on the Metropolitan Museum of Art to review a collection of ancient artifacts they believe were stolen from the country in the late 20th century.
According to the New York Times, representatives from the U.S. Attorneys officewhich has previously worked with the Cambodian government to reclaim looted antiquities located in the Statesmet with museum staffers last week to request a formal review of 45 highly significant objects from the Khmer Empire.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Met said it was the museum that prompted the meeting. Recently, in light of new information on some pieces in our collection, we reached out to the U.S. Attorneys officeto volunteer that we are happy to cooperate with any inquiry, the representative said.
The Met has a long and well-documented history of responding to claims regarding works of art, restituting objects where appropriate, being transparent about the provenance of works in the collection, and supporting further research and scholarship by sharing all known ownership history, the statement continued, adding that its leadership today aims to work proactively, reaching out to authorities when we receive new information or questions about any pieces.
Digital Representation Of Collections
Beginning in 2013, the Met organized the Digital Media Department for the purpose of increasing access of the museum’s collections and resources using digital media and expanded website services. The first Chief Digital Officer Sree Sreenivasan from 2013 departed in 2016 and was replaced by Loic Tallon at the time that the department became known by its simplified designation as the Digital Department. At the start of 2017, the department began its Open Access initiative summarized on the Met’s website titled “Digital Underground” stating: “It’s been six months since The Met launched its Open Access initiative, which made available all 375,000+ images of public-domain works in The Met collection under Creative Commons Zero . During what is just the dawn of this new initiative, the responses so far have been incredible.” At that time, more than 375,000 photographic images from the museum’s archival collection were released for public domain reproduction and use both by the general public and by large public access websites such as those available at Google BigQuery.

The Galleries Housed In The Michael C Rockefeller Wing Of The Museum Will Be Modernised To Better Contextualise The Collection And Illustrate The Complex Story Of Cultural Development Over The Last 5000 Years

This week, the Metropolitan Museum of Art celebrated the beginning of a $70m project to reinvigorate its African, ancient American and Oceanic art galleries, housed in the Michael C. Rockefeller wing of the museum. The 40,000 sq. ft galleries, which were inaugurated in 1982, will be reworked to better contextualise and exhibit the collection, and will aim to address the complex story of cultural development over the last 5,000 years, as well as general issues regarding trade, governance, ideology and relationships, says Max Hollein, the museum’s director.
The Met has developed the project with the New York-based architect Kulapat Yantrasast of the firm wHY. Part of the overhaul involves the installation of a glass wall to better illuminate the galleries and the addition of new fixtures to increase the display of artworks across the space. When the wing reopens in 2024, it will span nearly 3,000 works and include new audio, text and video features devised in collaboration between curators and several consultants, such as the archaeologist Oswaldo Chinchilla Mazariegos, a professor of anthropology at Yale University, who will advise on pre-Columbian objects.

What to Look For: Many of Vermeers works fill the canvas with evocative details that widen the scope of the paintings. In Young Woman With a Water Pitcher, look for the beautiful Turkish carpet on the table. Notice how the light streaming through the window is muted or flaring across the picture.
Nearby: A few steps away, in Galleries 634 and 637, you can dive deep into works by two other titans of Dutch painting: Rembrandt and Frans Hals.
