Erin Amico describes her first week as the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museums president and CEO as a surreal experience.
Ive been coming to the museum ever since I was a little kid with my parents. Coming back now and seeing everything behind the scenes is sort of like a look behind the curtain, Amico said.
In early June, the Board of Trustees at the Nature Museum elected Amico to become its first Black president and CEO in its 165 years of operation.
Amico started July 18, succeeding Deborah Lahey, who retired from the position in June after 12 years.
Born and raised in Hyde Park, Amico said she spent most of her time in the Lincoln Park or Gold Coast neighborhoods where the museum and the school she attended, the Latin School of Chicago, are located.
Coming from a family of scientists and educators, Amico said her love for nature and science was something that was ingrained in her from an early age.
The museum was a little bit of an escape for me, and when I was little, I wanted to be a zoologist or primatologist, Amico said. My interest in those areas stemmed from wanting to understand more about the environment and our role in it.

What to Expect: Safety Precautions & Protocols
In accordance with the CDC, state and city recommendations, masks are recommended for visitors over the age of 2, but are not required for entry. In addition, we are asking our visitors, volunteers, and staff to adhere to common COVID-19 safety procedures when they are in our building, including those listed below.
- Masks are recommended for guests during drop by programs under 30 minutes, but are not required.
- Eating is permitted only in designated eating areas: Natures Lunchbox and the Ravine .
- Social distancing is encouraged throughout the building, during programming, and on the Museum grounds.
Our decisions are informed by science, and we will continue to follow the science throughout the pandemic.

The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is a natural history museum located in Chicago, Illinois, and operated by the Chicago Academy of Sciences. The museum traces its history to the founding of the academy in 1857. After a century at a nearby location, the academy opened its present museum named for benefactor Peggy Notebaert in 1999 at the intersection of Fullerton Parkway and Cannon Drive in Lincoln Park. The institution focuses on the natural history of the Chicago region, and offers educational programs for children and adults. It is also known for its live butterfly house, which is attached to a laboratory and program to study and enhance Chicago area butterfly populations.

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is a natural history and science museum with a wide variety of exhibitions, programs, and activities focused on the natural history of the world.

The Museum of Science and Industry is a science museum located in Chicago, Illinois, in Jackson Park, in the Hyde Park neighborhood between Lake Michigan and The University of Chicago. It is housed in the former Palace of Fine Arts from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. “It’s a cool museum that you can spend the entire day in. That means that there are a lot of things to do that appeal to both kids and adults. There are special exhibits and 3D movies that come at a surcharge, but aside from those, everything else is free. This has similarities to other natural science museums with taxidermy animals and archaeological dinosaur fossils. I think my favorite has got to be going to the Sue exhibit. For those that don’t know, Sue is the most complete T-Rex ever with many of the bones being the original. It’s a really fascinating exhibit. The Egyptian exhibit is also Pretty dope! If you want a day with the family, this is a good spot!”
