Lots of people who visit New Orleans will take an organized swamp boat or airboat tour of the local marshlands and swamps.

However, there are a few free options and two of them are in the city. The first is City Park. The northern half of the park was designed to look like New Orleans without human development.

The other one is Bayou Sauvage, just 25 minutes from the French Quarter, which is free and where you can enjoy activities such as hunting, fishing, photography, and wildlife viewing.

See The Hurricane Katrina Restoration Efforts

In the years since Hurricane Katrina touched ground in New Orleans, efforts have been made to help restore the city to its former glory.

One example of this can be seen in the Make It Right campaign which began with the help of Brad Pitt.

The idea was to build hundreds of new and sustainable homes in the area, and architects have successfully done just that. These houses have very unique designs that you can see for free!

Another attempt at rebuilding came in the form of Musicians Village, a neighborhood designed for displaced musicians and families who needed affordable housing in the area.

The development of this area included a community center known as the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music .

If either of these activities is of interest, you may also want to consider a Hurricane Katrina tour.

We also cover this area in part two of our Hurricane Katrina video tour.

Organizerthe Danny Barker Banjo And Guitar Festival

Organizer of Danny Barker Fest 2022

The Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival was organized to preserve the importance of art, education and culture, which will erode in time, if not cherished and celebrated to evolve the youth of a new generation. We are also creating opportunities for musicians to have another work outlet, bringing music as a community outreach to senior citizens and also generating another resource of revenue for the economic development of our great city of New Orleans.

It was Mr. Barkers greatest wish that the Banjo and Guitar be the instruments of choice to carry the tradition forward.

One of the goals of the Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival is to generate funds to develop and implement sustainable outreach to senior centers in the Greater New Orleans Area to reconnect our seniors to the style of music that many grew up loving. This was very important to Danny Barker and this festival is a vehicle to keep his dream alive. Most important, is the music and education component which explains the origin and development of the music over the years.

Bywater Tour | Friday, February 18 | 10:00 am | Tickets $20 Members/ $25 GA | Departure point: Hotel Peter & Paul

The Bywater, previously known as the Upper Ninth Ward, lies on natural high ground along the Mississippi River. In the 300 years of urban growth, the desirable riverside location transformed from colonial plantations to an important industrial area linked by railroads and river transport to national and international shipping. The dense working class community that grew up alongside is rich in historic houses colorful Creole cottages and ornamented shotgun dwellings and has been transformed since Hurricane Katrina floods into one of the citys most vibrant neighborhoods. The industrial riverfront has been replaced by a linear urban park, and many of the warehouses have become restaurants, artist studios and home to a variety of creative industries. The one-way tour will start at Hotel Peter & Paul, a recent and acclaimed adaptive reuse of a closed Catholic church complex of buildings and end at the Piety St entrance to Crescent Park, with an optional guided walk back to the Crescent Park entrance at Elysian Fields.

The Mint In The 20th And 21st Centuries

Closure

By the early twentieth century, the U.S. Treasury had mints operating in New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and the main center in Philadelphia, which more than met the demand for minted money. In 1904, the government ceased the minting of the silver dollar, which accounted for the bulk of the coinage the New Orleans branch had been producing since 1879. In 1909 Treasury officials declined to appropriate funds for the mint’s operation, effectively halting subsequent minting activity in New Orleans. In 1911, the New Orleans Mint was formally decommissioned and the machinery was transferred to the main U. S. Mint facility in Philadelphia,.

Twenty years later, in 1930, GovernorHuey Long would rail against this loss when he ran for the office of U.S. Senator against incumbent Joseph E. Ransdell. In a circular distributed by his campaign to the citizens of New Orleans, Long listed the loss of the Mint as the very first of many complaints against Ransdell’s lengthy service record in the Senate. Long went on to win the election, although he did not take office until his term as governor expired in 1932. At some point, however, the original New Orleans machinery was lost, and, at present, has not been located.

Transformation

The Mint building is located at 400 Esplanade Avenue, not far from the Mississippi River.
