A Tour Through The Brand New Academy Museum Of Motion Pictures

Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opens its doors to the public

Before IMDb and Wikipedia, while most people only thought of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences during Oscar season, the Academy provided a small haven for Los Angeles fact-checkers looking for quotes and clips about celebrities. During a summer unpaid internship, I spent a few hours at the Fairbanks Center for Motion Pictures Study to visit the Margaret Herrick Library and the Academy Headquarters Building in Beverly Hills.

The headquarters used to house two galleries which had changing exhibits related to films, filmmaking and film stars. The Grand Lobby Gallery and the Fourth Floor Gallery were free to the public, but these have closed now in preparation for the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Originally set to open in 2020, the museum finally opened its doors to the public on Thursday, September 30, 2021. Director and president of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Bill Kramer noted, “The pandemic required us to move our opening twice because museums were not open in Los Angeles. That only allowed for more time to build these beautiful exhibitions in a COVID-safe way.”

The current exhibits at the Academy Museum include:

The exhibits, all of which are temporary, mean to display and discuss the many different branches of the Academythe arts and the sciences. Of course, the Oscars are also addressed. You can see some historic Oscars as well as hear clips from Oscar speeches.

Stories Of Cinema Exhibition

The multi-floor Stories of Cinema is the Academy Museums ever-evolving core exhibition exploring narrative movies, documentaries, animation, and the multifarious arts and sciences behind them. It begins in the Grand Lobby of the Saban Building, where a towering glass-walled gallery and multiscreen experience serve as a free introduction. The second floor currently showcases the works and influences of Spike Lee the history of the Academy Awards the role and reflection of social issues in filmmaking and, as a case study, the many disciplines that brought The Wizard of Oz to life. On the third floor, familiar faces like R2-D2, Bugs Bunny, and Okoye from Black Panther adorn the multi-room Inventing Worlds & Characters experience, alongside special installations by director Pedro Almodóvar, composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, and sound designer Ben Burtt.

Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898

The first of its kind, Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898-1971 is an in-depth, research-driven exploration of Black participation in American filmmaking. Opening in 2022, it reveals the important yet all too often unsung history of African American filmmakers in the development of this countrys cinema, from its early days to just after the civil rights movement. Regeneration highlights the work of independent African American filmmakers, with the goal of redefining US film history by elevating this underrepresented aspect of artistic production and presenting a more inclusive story.

The museum, with nine levels, has an asymmetric industrial look to match the architecture of the neighborhood. In addition to its interior galleries, it has 1207 square meters of open-air exhibit space on a large terrace atop one section of the building. It was built of steel, concrete, and stone, but also with pine wood and other materials recycled from demolished factories. Jule Iovine, architecture critic of the Wall Street Journal, called it “a welcoming, creative machine” thanks to its “open, changeable spaces,” and Michael Kimmelman, critic of the New York Times, called it “an outdoor perch to see and be seen… There’s a generosity to the architecture, a sense of art connecting with the city and vice versa”.

As the long-anticipated Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opens in Los Angeles, we examine the place in cinema history of one of its key supporters, Rolex, as well as the brands long-term commitment to the art of filmmaking.

The opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Sep 30 marked a major milestone in cinema history. According to The Hollywood Reporter, late industry giants such as Walt Disney, Louis B Mayer, Mary Pickford and Gloria Swanson were keen for such a museum to be created. Now, at long last, alongside other tributes to Americas contribution to the cinematic arts including the Universal Studios theme parks and a slew of museums housing costumes, props, posters and Hollywood memorabilia comes an institution thats fully up to the task.

Dedicated to the history, science and cultural influence of filmmaking, the Academy Museum is the first and largest of its kind in the US. The 300,000 sq ft campus stands proudly at the corner of Fairfax Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. Its location is well poised to welcome visitors from across the world to experience exhibitions, screenings, programmes and collections that illuminate the past, present and future of motion pictures.

Rolex maintains it has never and will never put a watch in a movie as product placement, although the brand clearly welcomes a directors own choice to use the brand to portray fortitude in a particular character.

The Path To Cinema: Highlights From The Richard Balzer Collection

The late Richard Balzer was a collector and author fascinated by anything related to visual entertainment. His 9,000-piece collection, gathered and meticulously preserved over more than 40 years, includes pre-cinema curiosities from Europe, Asia and America dating as far back as the 17th century. Built around Balzers vast labor of love, this illuminating exhibition explores the evolution of todays cinematic experience through a long tradition of optical amusements including peepshows, flip books, zoetropes, and kaleidoscopes, and featuring a magic lantern show created specifically for this exhibition. While quaint today, for generations before the advent of projected movies these were devices of transporting, almost magical wonder.

‘the Parthenon’ Of Film Museums

Academy Museum of Motion Pictures | Opens September 30, 2021

After false starts, the academy announced plans in 2012 to renovate the 1939 May Co. Wilshire building, a stunning Streamline Moderne structure and classic former department store, as the museum’s permanent home. The brand new, modern Sphere Building , which contains two state-of-the-art movie theaters and a viewing deck that provides stunning open-air views of the distant Hollywood sign, was built as a contrasting structure for the 300,000-square-foot, seven-story museum now part of Museum Row in Los Angeles’ Miracle Mile.

There have been building halts and budget overruns for the $484 million project. Even after Tom Hanks announced at the February 2020 Oscars that the museum would open later in the year, the COVID-19 pandemic forced additional delays. However, last week, board of trustees member Hanks, who spearheaded fundraising efforts with Annette Bening and Walt Disney Co. executive chairman Bob Iger, proudly heralded the lauded new building.

“We all know, films are made everywhere in the world, wonderful films,” Hanks told reporters. “And there are other cities with film museums, but with all due respect, created by the Motion Picture Academy in Los Angeles, this museum has really got to be the Parthenon of such places.”

Spielberg, who donated $10 million toward the movie museum, also loaned one of his greatest movie mementos, an original surviving “Rosebud” sled, the emotional centerpiece from Orson Welles’ classic film “Citizen Kane.”

Highlighting Hollywood’s Complicated History

The film museum educates and celebrates diverse, often overlooked filmmakers and delves into, rather than ignoring, the unsavory sides of Hollywood history. One display features Anna May Wong, the Chinese-American 1920s movie star who was denied leading roles, while the museum’s makeup and hairstyling exhibit displays methods of blackface and yellowface used in the 1930s and 40s.

“They didn’t avoid it. And actually embracing the conversation of these Hollywood practices opens up the conversation for everyone to voice their views and opinions,” says Carter. “This is a welcome place for people to come and have those conversations and actually see the work that was done.”

Carter was heartened that the museum’s opening film presentation Sunday featured director Spike Lee and Denzel Washington discussing their film “Malcolm X,” a film on which Carter collaborated.

During a prescreening discussion, Lee recalled declaring around the 1992 “Malcolm X” release that school children should be excused from class to see the film. After all, Lee said, “I had a class trip to see Gone with the Wind!”

Marking the museum’s launch week with “Malcolm X” was not lost on Carter as “a way of telling the community that the Academy Museum is poised and ready to embrace the cultural films that have shaped communities like mine. It sets the tone for everything that this museum will represent for the filmmaking community.”

Paris The Whale Commercial Mall Bercy 2

“The Whale” Bercy 2 is a shopping mall with 70 stores and 36,000 m2 located in Paris , along the bankside of the river Seine and the “Périphérique” ring road.

Inaugurated on April 24, 1990, the building is only the third work of architect after the Centre Pompidou. The cyclopean wooden structure, covered with 27,000 satin stainless steel tiles and pierced with oculus to let an overhead light pass, is completely innovative. Its curvature which follows the turn of a ramp on the ring road evokes a large airship, hence the nicknames “The Zeppelin” or “The Whale”.

It included a massive through the , an open-air theatre machine within the ruins of the former , and the construction of a new Parliament building. The gate project was controversial, though the old gate it replaced was only built in the 1960s, in the Italian rationalist style. The “theater machine” is particularly unusual the original idea was that in summertime a steel portable theater with stage and wings and a thousand seats can be installed inside the ruins of the 19th century opera house, which had been destroyed in World War II. It has its own stage equipment and technology for reproducing the acoustics of a traditional opera house. When performances are not taking place, the “machine” was meant to turn back into a public square and gathering place. The is a mixture of modern technique and technology with the massive stone look of the city’s old walls.

LOS ANGELES Call me old-fashioned, but at the preview of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures slated to finally open on September 30 after years of funding-, construction-, and pandemic-related delays I wanted to see what it was actually like to watch a movie at the museum dedicated to the art form. In the midst of a pandemic and in a time where over a centurys worth of movie history is accessible from ones own home, it can sometimes feel like both audiences and studios alike have begun to devalue the theater experience.

The 1,000-seat David Geffen Theatre sits inside the architectural centerpiece of the Academy Museum, a 45,000-square-foot concrete and glass sphere that rises above Fairfax Avenue and has been referred to by locals as the Death Star, though architect Renzo Piano, in his opening remarks at the preview ceremony, would prefer you compare it to a soap bubble or a dirigible. The theater itself is luxe, filled with plush, red seats arranged arena-style. One would think it would be the ideal space for the Academy to host the Oscars if it had the capacity. But on the day of the preview, it was just me and no more than a dozen other people catching the afternoon matinee.

The museums restaurant, Fannys named after Fanny Brice, the original Funny Girl promises to be something of a showstopper in its own right, with managing partner Bill Chiat modeling the space on Golden Age eateries like the Brown Derby and Chasens.
