The memorial is completely free, but you must pay to visit the museum. Currently, tickets range from $15-$24. However, you can get free admission to the museum every Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. to two hours prior to closing with ticket distribution beginning at 4 p.m. Limited quantities of these tickets are available, and no more than four tickets are allowed per person. Free admission is always granted to family members of 9/11 victims, first responders, and recovery workers.

Mandatory $24 Admission Fee Set For 9/11 Museum Due To Lack Of Government Funds

A visit to the new National Sept. 11 Memorial Museum in New York City will be one of the costliest museum tickets in town.

Lacking government funding for its operations, the memorial’s board of trustees voted Thursday to set a $24 admission price when the museum opens in May.

Families of 9/11 victims will not be charged, and there will be discounts for children, senior citizens and students. In addition, admission will be free to everyone for three hours every Tuesday evening.

The memorial’s president, Joe Daniels, said the board had no choice but to charge a steep fee.

“The 9/11 Memorial does not yet receive government support for ongoing operations as many other important museums of our national history do,” he said.

“A museum admissions will also ensure the Memorial, which has had more than 11.5 million visitors since opening two years ago, will be free.”

The board set the museum’s annual operating budget at $63 million, including $10 million in security costs “for a site that has been attacked twice.”

Ticket and concession sales are projected to cover two-thirds of the budget. The board hopes fundraising will cover the rest.

/11 Memorial And Museum Will Charge $20

The 9/11 Museum and Memorial will have a new motto when it opens in April 2014: Never Forget To Pay Admission. Museum officials announced on Friday that visitors will have to pay a mandatory $20-25 admission fee to enter the museum . Were still in the process of considering how much, but it will be in the range of $20 to $25, Anthony Guido, a spokesman for the museum said. It will be a set fee. As you can imagine, 9/11 relatives are decidedly split about the decision.

Its ridiculous, retired FDNY Deputy Chief Jim Riches told the News. Riches lost his firefighter son Jimmy on 9/11. We asked for a memorial and theyve turned this into a P.T. Barnum production. These people are trying to make money off the worst day in American history. Debra Burlingame, a 9/11 relative who took part in planning the museum, said the idea of charging admission is not something we ever wanted to do, but added I dont think people realize the enormous costs of building something like this, in a location like this.”

However, this still doesn’t seem right to some. Sally Regenhard, whose firefighter son also died on 9/11, wrote an op-ed today claiming that the museum is making families “pay to grieve.”

The memorial is already charging a $2 service fee for people who make reservations for their visit online or by phone. It’s worth noting there have been several instances of tourists and kids trashing the memorial, or treating it like a Disney tour.

What Happened On 9/11

9/11 is shorthand for four coordinated terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda, an Islamist extremist group, that occurred on the morning of September 11, 2001.

Nineteen terrorists from al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes, deliberately crashing two of the planes into the upper floors of the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center complex and a third plane into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The Twin Towers ultimately collapsed because of the damage sustained from the impacts and the resulting fires. After learning about the other attacks, passengers on the fourth hijacked plane, Flight 93, fought back, and the plane was crashed into an empty field in western Pennsylvania about 20 minutes by air from Washington, D.C.

The attacks killed 2,977 people from 93 nations: 2,753 people were killed in New York 184 people were killed at the Pentagon and 40 people were killed on Flight 93.

$700 Million And Counting: 9/11 Museum Opens With Money Worries

The long-delayed National September 11 Memorial Museum’s grand opening marks the culmination of an emotionally charged and politically fraught journey that remains clouded by another chronic concern: money.

The museum, which descends into the bedrock below ground zero, and a street-level memorial plaza featuring a pair of waterfalls that opened to the public in 2011, together cost more than $700 million to build, a massive sum that was covered by government agencies and private donations, including $15 million from former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

But that tab did not include the annual estimated $63 million it will cost to operate the site. That is primarily why a ticket to the museum, which opens to the public May 21, will cost $24, with exceptions for victims families and those who worked in the rescue and cleanup operations. The memorial plaza is free.

Some have criticized the ticket price as prohibitively expensive, the reflection of bloated salaries and grandiose visions.

This is becoming a revenue-generating tourist attraction, said Jim Riches, a retired New York Fire Department chief whose firefighter son was killed in the World Trade Center. He donated his sons helmet to the museum, but refused to attend this weeks pre-opening ceremonies. They went way overboard, he said.

But supporters argue that the price isnt out of line of other major New York museums and tourist attractions.

At this point, the museum doesnt have many other options.
