Th Anniversary Memorial Services
The 20th anniversary came just weeks after a hastened withdrawal of United States troops from Afghanistan following the 2021 Taliban offensive in which the Taliban reconquered Afghanistan it also came amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and in the wake of the 2021 United States Capitol attack. It was in this climate that former President George W. Bush said in a speech at the Shanksville memorial that both foreign and domestic extremists were “children of the same foul spirit”, a comparison which angered some right-wing politicians and media figures. President Joe Biden, former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, and their respective first ladies attended a memorial ceremony together at the National September 11 Memorial, where the World Trade Center towers fell two decades prior. Biden then went on to visit the other two 9/11 crash sites, stopping at the national memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and finally, the Pentagon. Former President Donald Trump visited police and fire houses in New York City to commemorate the attack.
The Acting Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Philip Reeker attended a special changing of the guard at Windsor Castle during which the US National Anthem was performed.
A Simplified Member Experience
We quickly learned that the legacy platform was restricting the museums ability to customize copy, messaging, and the user flowcreating a suboptimal experience for new members. Disparities between online and offline member registration were also creating inconsistent records. Memberships purchased at the box office were entered into a different system and only later synchronized with a limited subset of constituent information.
Along with a cohesive set of technology recommendations, features, and backend optimizations to the structure of the data, pages, and systems, we redesigned the member experience with a new navigation and streamlined content pages focused on simplifying the experience for all visitors.

They do! Their coat check accepted our rolling carry on bag and backpack.

There are lockers at the museum for storage like bags and book bags but I am not so sure if they can fit luggage. I would call ahead first to be safe.

The Design Of The Memorial
Memorial Pools
The focal points of the Memorial are two pools, each nearly an acre in size, that sit in the footprints of the former North and South Towers. The pools contain the largest manmade waterfalls in North America, each descending 30 feet into a square basin. From there, the water in each pool drops another 20 feet and disappears into a smaller, central void.
According to the architect, Michael Arad, the pools represent absence made visible. Although water flows into the voids, they can never be filled. The sound of the cascading water makes the pools a place of tranquility and contemplation separate from the bustling noises of the city.
The names of the 2,983 people who were killed in the 2001 and 1993 terrorist attacks are inscribed on bronze parapets edging the memorial pools. The names are grouped by the locations and circumstances in which victims found themselves during the attacks. The North Pool parapets include the names of those who were killed at the North Tower, on hijacked Flight 11, and in the 1993 bombing. The South Pool parapets include the names of first responders as well as victims who were killed at the South Tower, on hijacked Flight 175, at the Pentagon, on hijacked Flight 77, and on hijacked Flight 93.

Museums For Tragedies Like 9/11 Face A New Challenge: Visitors Too Young To Remember
The creators of the National September 11 Memorial Museum adopted an unconventional approach when they began planning their exhibitions more than a decade ago. Rather than be the expert that tells visitors what they need to know, the creators decided to make a space of shared experience, using audio from voice mails, news coverage, first-responder radio transmissions, cockpit recorders and even funereal bagpipes to create a mosaic of personal perspectives.
Because the tragic events at the heart of the museum were witnessed by billions, visitors were going to bring their own stories to the exhibits. The museum decided to embrace their versions as part of a larger whole.
Everybody does that at family gatherings, right? Remember the time when … ? Thats the way human beings convey their history and their experiences, said Alice M. Greenwald, the museums president and chief executive.
But since opening in 2014, the museum increasingly attracts visitors who were born after 9/11 or who are too young to remember it. To connect with them, it is expanding the voices and stories, including the children of victims and survivors, and others whose lives were changed in the aftermath. The original oral histories still resonate, but the recent 20th anniversary prompted the museum to add new and younger perspectives to connect these visitors to their peers, too.

Tours are led by Education staff via Zoom and are conducive for all learning environments, whether in the classroom, blended, or remote. These interactive tours offer the opportunity for participants to ask questions and make observations in real time.

We are extremely excited to announce that, thanks to public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, virtual field trips are FREE for New York City schools for the spring semester. The Virtual Memorial School Tour, Grades 3-5 is a 45-minute age-appropriate exploration of artifacts inside the Museum that helps to reveal the stories they tell. /11 Museum Underground Galleries And Exhibitions
In a direct relationship with the Memorial, the underground Museum is a 110,000-square-foot ensemble of various exhibition spaces, located 70 feet under the level of the plaza and designed by the 9/11 Memorial Museum lead architects, Davis Brody Bond.
The underground galleries feature four permanent exhibitions: the Memorial exhibition, the Historical exhibition, and the Foundation Hall, as well as temporary and thematic exhibitions.
The Memorial exhibition, entitled In Memoriam, runs in the space between the Twin Towers footprints.The exhibition is composed of a long wall, truly impressive, which features the portraits of the 2,983 people who perished in the 1993 and 2001 terrorist attacks a group of touch-screen monitors provides details about each victim through texts, photos, and audio recordings.
The Historical exhibition comprises three chronological sections entitled Events of the Day, Before 9/11, and After 9/11.Through many artifacts, models, personal objects, documents, and audiovisuals, the exhibitions present the tragic events that occurred in the place, as well as their background, the immediate aftermath and long-term consequences.
Opened in 2016, Rendering the Unthinkable: Artists Respond to 9/11 presents artworks videos, drawings, sculptures, and painting by thirteen artists from New York City who, through their art, memorialize and react to the September 11 tragedy,

The National September 11 Memorial Is Designed To Foster The Democratic Values Of Public Assembly That Played Such A Pivotal Role In The Citys Collective Response To The Events Of 9/11
The National September 11 Memorial is an eight acre plaza set within the dense urban fabric of Lower Manhattan, where the former World Trade Center Twin Towers once stood. The Memorial Plaza is an integral part of the sixteen acre redeveloped World Trade Center Complex, and it reaches and connects the site to the city beyond.
The Memorial Plaza forms an eight acre clearing in the middle of the city and is vaulted by a permeable canopy of close to four hundred swamp white oak trees. As visitors to the memorial make their way towards the center of this space, they encounter the two reflecting pools that deeply puncture the vast flat expanse of the plaza, and form empty vessels. They are recessed thirty feet into the ground and are lined by waterfalls, delineating the location of the former towers. The voids are absence made present and visible.
Surrounding each acre-sized void is an eight-foot wide and two-foot high water table that serves as the source of the waterfalls. The serrated metal edge of the weir channels the water into separate streams and evokes the haunting loss of thousands of individual lives and the collective loss suffered by all with its billowing curtain of water composed of thousands of individual strands of water.

WASHINGTON Yesterday, President Trump announced the award of a $2 million 9/11 Memorial Act grant to the National September 11 Memorial & Memorial Plaza in New York City. The funding through the National Park Service will provide critical support for the continued operation, maintenance and security of the memorial and museum.
We all remember where we were on September 11, 2001 – a day in American history where the world seemed to stand still, said U.S. Secretary of the Interior David L. Bernhardt. This funding will provide critical support for the memorial, so current and future generations can visit and reflect on the events that transformed our nation.
As we near the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, we must never forget the bravery, sacrifice and the lives lost, said National Park Service Deputy Director David Vela, exercising the authority of the director.These grants help ensure the memorials are maintained and that the public can learn about and commemorate the heroes of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

In time for the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York is easing restrictions for researchers seeking to access its collection.
Previously, the institutions policy, as listed on its website, required that a researcher let the museum review their work prior to publication and incorporate any text changes the museum proposed in order to get its consent to publish. The museum reserved the right to pursue legal remedies for acts of non-compliance.
The museum, dedicated to the memory of one of the darkest days in U.S. history, initially adopted these rules as a way to stymy the promulgation of conspiracy theories about the events of 9/11. But it has been accused of trying to control the narrative around the 2001 terrorist attacks.
Our paramount concern was the misuse of donated materials to the museum for purposes of misrepresentation, the museums executive vice president, Clifford Chanin, told the Associated Press. Weve learned from our experience.

Memorials And Services For The September 11 Attacks
The first memorials to the victims of the in 2001 began to take shape online, as hundreds of webmasters posted their own thoughts, links to the Red Cross and other rescue agencies, photos, and eyewitness accounts. Numerous online September 11 memorials began appearing a few hours after the attacks, although many of these memorials were only temporary. Around the world, U.S. embassies and consulates became makeshift memorials as people came out to pay their respects.
The Tribute in Light was the first major physical memorial at the World Trade Center site. A permanent memorial and museum, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center, were built as part of the design for overall site redevelopment. The Memorial consists of two massive pools set within the original footprints of the Twin Towers with 30-foot waterfalls cascading down their sides. The names of the victims of the attacks are inscribed around the edges of the waterfalls. Other permanent memorials have been constructed around the world.
One of the places that saw many memorials and candlelight vigils was Pier A in Hoboken, New Jersey. There was also a memorial service on March 11, 2002, at dusk on Pier A when the Tribute in Light first turned on, marking the half-year anniversary of the terrorist attack. A permanent September 11 memorial for Hoboken, called Hoboken Island, was chosen in September 2004.

Controversies Surrounding The Museum
Little Syria
A neighborhood that was once called Little Syria, a center of Christian Arab immigrant life in the United States beginning in the 1880s, once existed just south of the site of the World Trade Center. The cornerstone of St. Joseph’s Lebanese was found under the rubble, next to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at 157 Cedar Street. Both congregations were founded by Christians who had fled Ottoman oppression in the Middle East. Activists lobbied for the Museum to include a permanent exhibit about the neighborhood to “help the thousands of tourists who visit the site to understand that immigrants from Ottoman lands have played a patriotic role in the country’s history,” arguing that it was important to memorialize the multiethnic character of “Little Syria.” The old Christian Syrian neighborhood was demolished in the 1940s due to the construction of the BrooklynBattery Tunnel.

Controversies Surrounding The Memorial
Mohammad Salman Hamdani
Although victims’-family groups agreed that names would be grouped by workplace or other affiliation, NYPD cadet Mohammad Salman Hamdani was not included with the other first responders or the other victims whose remains were found in the wreckage of the North Tower. His name appears on the memorial’s panel 66 for World Trade Center victims , with those who did not fit into the groups created by the memorial committee or who had a loose connection to the World Trade Center. Hamdani’s mother, Talat, has campaigned for the Memorial to acknowledge her son as a police cadet and first responder. Hamdani received a full police-department funeral after his body was found , and the street on which he lived was renamed in his honor.
Arabic-language brochures
Although the memorial’s brochures were initially translated into at least ten languages, these languages did not include Arabic. The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee questioned this decision in letters to memorial directors, and ADC director of communications and advocacy Raed Jarrar said: “Our fear is that there is a political intention behind the exclusion”. A memorial representative told the New York Post, “As Arabic-speaking visitors currently represent our 25th-largest group, Arabic translations are not yet among the initial foreign-language editions.”
