Financial Stability For The Seaport Museum

Our proposal provides the South Street Seaport Museum with financial stability for the first time in its 50-year history. Through its proposal, the Howard Hughes Corporation will commit significant funding to stabilize and reinvigorate the museum, enabling physical improvements and a fund for reliable, recurrent revenue, preventing permanent closure.

That funding will enable the revitalization and reopening of the museum for the first time since Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Additionally, the proposal includes funding for the design and planning of a state-of-the-art, resilient expansion of this beloved institution with modern exhibition space and improved facilities for collections and archives that will enable the museum to share the Seaports maritime history with a new generation of visitors.

While the buildings, piers, boats and history make the South Street Seaport a special place to visit, my favorite part of it are the views!

Whether it is from the rooftop or riverdeck at Pier 17, walking the cobblestone streets, or just wandering all around this historic district, you are bound to come by some great views.

This includes views of the East River, Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, downtown Manhattan, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the district itself.

Enjoy A Beautiful Day At The South Street Seaport

The South Street Seaport in New York City is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved areas of the 19th century. The monuments fill this neighborhood where Fulton Street meets the East River. Within proximity to the Brooklyn Bridge and areas like Wall Street, it is the home of the many iconic old trading buildings. Due to various upgrades, the area is only becoming more modern while holding on to its historic charm!

How South Street Seaport Began: Some Nyc History

For almost 400 years, the seaport has served the city as a hub of commerce and entertainment. When New York was first discovered by Henry Hudson in the 17th century, the neighborhood acted as an outpost for the Dutch West India Company. The trade that started here helped New Yorks economy grow to be one of the most successful in the world.

As time went on, the South Street Seaport continued to transform as a gateway for international shipping, the wholesale fish trade, and the printing press business. A new urban renewal plan was even pioneered for the neighborhood in order to preserve historic buildings while modern construction could continue alongside it.

Things took a turn for the worse after Hurricane Sandy hit New York in October of 2012. South Street Seaport was left heavily damaged and flooded in seven feet of water. Many businesses closed and Pier 17, the hub of the entire neighborhood, was torn down. But, as New York has done time and time again, the city was able to rebuild and bring the neighborhood back to its former glory.

South Street Seaport was the citys first 24-hour neighborhood, and today it still fits right in with the city that never sleeps.

From the former Fulton Fish Market to the modern mall filled with shops and food, the South Street Seaport has so much to offer. Lets take a look.

South Street Eating And Drinking

In the mood for Italian? Seafood? Asian fusion? You can find it all at South Street Seaport.

Over the years, the neighborhood has slowly transformed into a hub of diverse eateries and innovative dining experiences.

Check out some of the most popular restaurants in the area:

• Fresh Salt, a neighborhood bar whose name is derived from the faded advertisement on the front of the building an old smokehouse from the 1800s.
• Fishmarket Restaurant, longtime eatery that serves oysters, clams, and a host of other fresh seafood dishes.
• Barbalu, a rustic Italian restaurant rebuilt by a husband-and-wife team after their old restaurant was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.
• Seaport Food Lab, a high-end, foodie paradise hosting celebrity chefs for short-term residencies and offering multi-course prix fixe dinners.

Nothing above strikes your fancy? Not to worry. The seaport has plenty of other options for those looking to dine in the area.

Tour The Tall Ship Wavertree

In response to the recent rise in COVID-19 transmission in New York City, the Seaport Museum has paused in-person programming until January 22, 2022.

The permanently-moored 1885 tall ship Wavertree is open to the public for FREE on Saturdays and Sundays, with timed entry, from 11am-5pm at Pier 16 . Guided tours depart hourly and last approximately 30 minutes. Advance reservations are recommended. Guests must check in 15 minutes before the tour at reception at 12 Fulton Street.

Guided tours include access to the main deck and quarter deck. Learn how people worked and lived aboard a 19th century cargo sailing vessel, from the captain to the ships officers, cooks, and crew. Then visit the cargo hold and stand atop the viewing platform where you can take in the massive main cargo area.

Please note that in accordance with the expansion of NYC Emergency Executive Order 225, people over age 12 will be required to show proof they are fully vaccinated to enter the lower decks and enclosed spaces of Wavertree, and proof of at least one COVID-19 vaccination dose will be required for all guests ages 5 and older, who are to be accompanied by a fully vaccinated adult. Proof of vaccination can be provided in the form of a physical immunization card, NY Excelsior Pass app, or the NYC COVID Safe app when you check in at the red welcome tent on Pier 16.

Welcoming New Neighbors At 250 Water Street

Our plan proposes the transfer of a portion of unused development rights from the East River waterfront to the 250 Water Street site, transforming a surface parking lot into a new, mixed-income development near public transit.

Importantly, the transfer of development rights will help preserve the low-rise character of the waterfront by moving the rights upland, directly adjacent to the Financial District, while making possible a host of essential benefits and improvements to the Seaport community.

• Significance: Built as a Federal style store and residence for the grocer Matthew Howell in 1798 or 1799, 206 Front Street is one of the oldest buildings in the Seaport. How Do I Get To South Street Seaport & Map

The historic South Street Seaport district is a 4-acre area that hugs the East River just south of the Brooklyn Bridge, and east of the Financial District.

Below is a map of the Seaport area to give you a better sense of location. I have also pinpointed a few of the highlights that you should be sure to visit :

There are several ways to get yourself to this historic district depending on where you are coming from and your overall preference.

Subway: The most convenient and cost-efficient way to get around the city is by the NYC subway system. A single ride costs just $2.75 no matter how far the journey.

I also highlighted on the map above all of the nearest subway stations. As you can see there are a lot of them . The closest subway stations would include:

Fulton Street: 4 & 5 line 2 & 3 line, J & Z line

Wall Street: 4 & 5 line 2 & 3 line, J & Z line

Rector or Cordlandt Street: R & W line

CitiBike: If you want to get some exercise in for the day, why not opt for the NYC CitiBike system. For just $3.50 per ride you can rent a bike for up to 30 minutes. There are docking stations all over the city with at least 4 stations within a couple block radius of the Seaport.

Taxi/Uber: The most convenient of options will probably just be hopping in a taxi or Uber to get yourself to the Seaport. This is not a cheap option though depending on where you are coming from.

If you do opt for this, you can ask to be dropped off at the corner of Pearl Street and Fulton Street.

Bringing Affordable Housing To Lower Manhattan

The proposal will bring some of the first new permanently affordable housing in decades to an affluent neighborhood, where the average household income is more than $150,000, and just 2.5% of housing qualifies as affordable.

The projects 70+ units of affordable housing will be the first affordable housing in Community Board 1 complying with the Mandatory Inclusionary Housing program for families earning 40% of the Area Median Income or less.

The project will also enhance the area by providing enhancement of the streetscape.

Without the museum, the historic significance of the district would greatly diminish.

The South Street Seaport: A Neighborhood Transformed

Much like the Financial District after 9/11, the South Street Seaport has made a triumphant return and restored itself in a spectacular way following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. There is new life and a fresh energy in the area as it grows to be even greater than it was in the past.

Since the neighborhood is only a 15-minute walk or so from the New York Stock Exchange and World Trade Center. While you are here, this museum is a must. This is especially relevant for fans of sailing ships and shipping. The South Street Seaport Museum is located in the historic neighborhood of the original New York City port. Within the area there is a an iconic working press, an archeology museum, a library, a craft center, the Marine Life Conservation Lab, and the largest fleet of historic ships in private ownership in the United States. Fulton Market Building & Stall Market

Located in the heart of the Seaport district you will find the Fulton Market Building. The market itself has much history as it has been in place since 1822 . It even used to house the Fulton Fish Market.

Today you can find an indoor and outdoor farmers market at 91 South Street with all types of local produce. The indoor market is open from Monday to Saturday year round. The outdoor market is open on Saturdays 11:30AM 5:00PM from May until November.

The main Fulton Market building is currently undergoing renovation.

After Nearly Going Under New Yorks South Street Seaport Museum Just Secured $50 Million In Funding But Not Everyone Is On Board

Most of the funding comes from the Howard Hughes Corporation on the condition that it build a high-rise in the historic district.

Six months into the U.S. pandemic lockdowns, the fate of an institution devoted to the history of one of the countrys oldest cities hung in the balance. The South Street Seaport Museum, which has preserved the artifacts of New York as a port city since 1967, raised an alarm in an email from its president and CEO, Jonathan Boulware.

Ours is a sacred charge, but we must act quickly, he wrote. At present stripped-down levels of funding, the museum will not survive 2021. The Seaport Museum was hardly alone two months later, the Alliance of American Museums reported that nearly a third of museums said they were at risk of closure.

Now, the storm has passed, and there is smooth sailing ahead, Boulware has announced. The museum just secured a $40 million gift from a real-estate developer in exchange for its air rights, a move approved by the New York City Council last Wednesday. The city has also pledged to give the institution $10 million.

To say Im thrilled would be an understatement, Boulware told Artnet News.

Were obviously encouraged to see the museum succeed, said Sheldon. We just didnt believe that it should be at the expense of the historic district.

Where To Stay In Manhattan

There are so many different neighborhoods to choose from when visiting Manhattan. Below are some of my top choices for a few of my recommended locations in the city:

Chelsea: If you are looking to be well situated between uptown, midtown, and downtown, then Chelsea can be a great option for you. You have highlights such as the Highline, Chelsea Market, Little Island, and the Hudson River right nearby.

And if you are looking to head to Central Park uptown or the World Trade Center area further downtown, then you are just a quick subway ride away. Recommended Chelsea hotels:

Midtown: Right in the middle of the action is the midtown area, where you have the one and only Times Square, and all Broadway shows right at your doorstep. You are also within walking distance to the southern end of Central Park.

Almost all subway lines connect at Times Square so getting around should not be an issue. Recommended Midtown hotels:

Tribeca: If you are trying to stay in downtown Manhattan, then I would recommend looking into the Tribeca area. Staying here and you will be just a stones throw away from the World Trade Center area, 9/11 Memorial Pools & Museum, and Battery Park. Recommended Tribeca Hotels:
