What The 9/11 Museum Could Learn From Two Latin American Memorials

It is difficult to say at which point during my visit to the 9/11 Memorial Museum I went from somber to irritated. Was it at the umpteenth piece of mangled wreckage? Or at one of the overwhelming displays, cluttered with everything from a mans watch to singed papers to a carbonized telephone, amid all the requisite news photos and portraits of the dead?

Maybe it was the barrage of audio and broadcast news Matt Lauer and Katie Couric trying to make sense of an explosion at the World Trade Center playing on an endless loop. Or perhaps it was watching a tourist snap a picture of his child in front a smashed New York Fire Department truck. The cheesy gift shop complete with FDNY jackets for dogs left me feeling queasy.

As my colleague Christopher Hawthorne wrote in May when it first opened at New Yorks ground zero, the 9/11 Memorial Museum isnt a place that leaves you any space to be alone with your thoughts. And he couldnt be more right on.

Entering the museum is a procedure that requires a TSA-style full-body scan. The exit is an escalator ride that douses the visitor with bagpipe music. The relentless multimedia-ness of the whole experience made me more frazzled than reflective.

Yuyanapaq was a simple exhibit that required viewers focus and commitment. And for that reason it never failed to be contemplative. It was a space that, with the most basic of tools well chosen photos, wall text, a bit of sound inspired deep reflection.

/11 Memorial & Museum: Things You Should Know Before Visiting Ground Zero

As humans, we experience emotion on a vast spectrum. Sometimes our feelings can be described in simple words: joy, love, pain, or sorrow. Other times, it seems as if there’s not one word in any language that could come close to describing how we feel.

On September 11, 2001, most of America stopped in its tracks. The shocking events that took place on that tragic day pulled Americansand much of the rest of the worldaway from their busy lives to feel waves of complex emotion. Many years later, the day brings the country together in a reflective moment of silence. September 11 is a day that should never, and will never, be forgotten.

The 9/11 Memorial and Museum is a tribute to the men, women, and children who lost their lives during the attacks on September 11, 2001, and February 26th, 1993. It is a physical reminder to ensure future generations understand what happened. The memorial consists of sunken twin pools set within the very foundations of the Twin Towers. The names of every person killed in the attacks are inscribed in bronze, and form the tops of the walls that encase each pool. A peaceful waterfall cascades down all four sides of the pools. The memorial has been described as deeply moving, gripping, and peaceful.

Should You Bring The Kids

While children are welcome inside the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, the museum exhibitions may not be appropriate for children under the age of 10. It may also be difficult to properly explain the events of 9/11 and their impact to young children. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum provides a guide for children, and staff is available to help answer questions. It’s recommended that you allow yourself at least three to four hours to fully embrace the memorial and the contents of the museum, as the experience is very emotional. Some find the museum to be overwhelming however, many have attested that its deep impact is part of what makes the museum and memorial so necessary. Finding the right tone when creating a museum around a day so tragic is difficult, but many feel that the museum appropriately creates an informative and touching experience that pays tribute to the victims and the emotions the nation felt on that day, the days following, and even now.

Amid The 9/11 Flames He Chose To Help

Washington, DC Former Secretary of Defense and CIA Director Leon Panetta on Saturday said he’s “pleased” with President Joe Biden’s decision to order a declassification review of documents related to the FBI’s investigation of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but he doubts victims’ families will gain “satisfactory answers” about the role Saudi Arabia played.

CNN’s Donald Judd contributed to this report.

Museums For Tragedies Like 9/11 Face A New Challenge: Visitors Too Young To Remember

Gov. Hochul Visits 9/11 Musem

The creators of the National September 11 Memorial Museum adopted an unconventional approach when they began planning their exhibitions more than a decade ago. Rather than be the expert that tells visitors what they need to know, the creators decided to make a space of shared experience, using audio from voice mails, news coverage, first-responder radio transmissions, cockpit recorders and even funereal bagpipes to create a mosaic of personal perspectives.

Because the tragic events at the heart of the museum were witnessed by billions, visitors were going to bring their own stories to the exhibits. The museum decided to embrace their versions as part of a larger whole.

Everybody does that at family gatherings, right? Remember the time when … ? Thats the way human beings convey their history and their experiences, said Alice M. Greenwald, the museums president and chief executive.

But since opening in 2014, the museum increasingly attracts visitors who were born after 9/11 or who are too young to remember it. To connect with them, it is expanding the voices and stories, including the children of victims and survivors, and others whose lives were changed in the aftermath. The original oral histories still resonate, but the recent 20th anniversary prompted the museum to add new and younger perspectives to connect these visitors to their peers, too.

As 9/11 Moves From ‘memory To History’ Memorial Acts As Beacon For Future Generations

National September 11 Memoria...

The 9/11 Memorial & Museum opened in May of 2014, to remember, reflect and honor those lost in the attacks on both September 11, 2001, and the first attack on the World Trade Center.

Today, the museum and eight acre memorial acts as a beacon of sorts, welcoming visitors from across the globe with a mission to commemorate, educate and inspire. And now, 20 years after the destruction of the Twin Towers, the museum is also looking to the next generation.

“We’re in the middle of a transition from memory to history,” Alice Greenwald, National September 11 Memorial and Museum President and CEO told Yahoo Finance in an interview.

“There’s an entire generation of people, 25 years and younger, kids, who were maybe too young to remember the events or born after 9/11, for whom this is history, history to be learned,” she explained. “So while our mission remains the same, our focus is evolving to be more responsive to this next generation.”

One of those people is Amanda Carithers of San Diego, who was in her 9th grade English class on 9/11/2001. She felt it was crucial to visit the memorial and museum on her first visit to New York.

“We thought this was pertinent and it’s a part of our nation’s history, to actually come to see it,” she told Yahoo Finance. “It’s indescribable.”

Dayna Hias of Santa Rosa California also felt compelled to visit the site. She was 11 years old on that fateful day.

Groupon Purchase Form Uk

We are going to New York in 3 weeks coming from UK .

I have just tried to purchase Groupon US offer for Central Park bike rental but when trying to pay with my UK credit card there is no option to select different country other than USA or Canada.

I have googled for advise and tried to enter address of hotel in New York we are staying at, but it will not let me complete the purchase, saying bad request.

Does it mean Groupon closed the loophole of using US postcode? Did anybody managed to buy Groupon offer recently?

Did you try leaving it empty?

Diane

I have used the Live Chat on Groupon website to ask, and was told I can only purchase on Groupon US with card issued in USA, it’s their company policy..

So the loophole of using US postcode no longer works.

Seems odd they are willingly missing out on all the business from International tourists.

Travelzoo and Living Social US take our UK cards no problem, so just booked Washington tour with Travelzoo US and Bike rental in Central park with Living Social US 🙂

Last time we were in new York I pre-purchased many Groupons with no problem at all using a Citibank credit card.

I’m just about to start buying some for our upcoming trip so hope the rules haven’t changed

I purchase groupons in Holland … I think the key lies in filling in your personal details … here’s what I do:

Billing address: your own address

City: your city and UK

State/Province: New York

New York Gov Kathy Hochul Signed 3 Bills Relating To 9/11 First Responders Benefits

9/11 Memorial & Museum maintains mission to remember and educate the next generation

New York. Gov Kathy Hochul on Saturday announced she signed three pieces of legislation into law aimed at providing 9/11 first responders with easier access to benefits.

The first piece of legislation expands the definition of those who are considered first responders at the World Trade Center recovery.

“These laws will help not only first responders who were at the World Trade Center on that terrible day and those who cleaned the site for weeks afterward, but also the emergency dispatchers and communications personnel who keep us safe today,” Hochul said in a statement Saturday. “We will ensure they receive the support and benefits they deserve.”

The second piece of legislation signed Saturday establishes an online submission option for filing a “WTC notice of participation” statement within the state retirement system to recieve benefits. Previously, a written statement was required.

The third law defines the term “first responder in communications” and recognizes 911 operators and dispatchers as first responders, according to Hochul’s office. The legislation also requires those who employ those classified as “first responder in communications” to require particular training.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Said ‘the Terror Attacks On The Morning Of September 11th Forever Changed Our Nation And The World’

“Twenty years ago, the terror attacks on the morning of September 11th forever changed our nation and the world,” Pelosi said in a Saturday morning statement. “These acts of incomprehensible evil left heartbreaking images seared into our collective memory: the Twin Towers collapsing into rubble on the streets of Manhattan, smoke billowing from the Pentagon, Flight 93 crashing down in a Pennsylvania field.”

“Yet, the story of September 11, 2001 is also one of extraordinary heroism and hope: from the first responders who charged into danger with courage beyond measure to the everyday Americans who came together to help New York neighborhoods rebuild from the ashes,” she added.

“Joe, we love and miss you more than you could ever imagine.”

“Our son is the spitting image of you,” one woman says, speaking about her husband who was killed in the attacks.

“He lights up my world every day. I see you in everything that he does, and I know that you see us because I feel you,” she added, choking back tears. “Continue to watch over us and your family. 20 years feels like an eternity but yet it still feels like yesterday. Until we meet again, my love, rest in peace.”
