The palace is the official residence of the Royal Family of Spain. However, nowadays it is mainly used for state ceremonies. The building boasts hundreds of lavish rooms with costly artworks. Although only a select few are open to the public, even these are enormously remarkable. If you want to learn more about the rich history of the building, you can get an excellent guided tour. The Royal Palace is open to the public from 10am-6pm. There is also a beautiful garden around the palace which can be accessed for free until 9 pm.

Founded in 1963, the Picasso Museum in Barcelona was launched with a donation of 574 works by Picassos secretary, Jaime Sabartés. In 1970, Picasso himself donated 800 more pieces to the museum.

Museo De Bellas Artes De Bilbao Virtual Tour Bilbao
Often overshadowed by the famous Guggenheim Bilbao, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao is nonetheless one of Spains best museums. If youre an art lover, you should definitely visit in person one day.
Located in Bilbaos Abando neighborhood, the museum boasts over 10,000 art works, arranged chronologically from the 12th century to the present. It has works by Spanish artists Picasso, Goya, El Greco, Zurbaran, and Chillada, as well as many international artists.

The best-known art galleries inMadrid can be found in slightly more bohemian areas. Famous artists have shown here, such as Miquel Barceló or Chema Madoz in the Elvira González gallery, or the documentary photographers Albero García Alix and Cristina García Rodero in the Juana de Aizpuru. Other important galleries are the Marlborough and Heinrich Ehrhardt, known for their support of up-and-coming artists, and the Cayón, La Caja Negra, Max Estrella, Pilar Serra and Travesía Cuatro. And the Elba Benítez gallery is notable for its video exhibitions and site-specific installations.Most of these galleries are in the triangle marked by the Alonso Martínez, Tribunal and Chueca Metro stations and in neighbouring streets such as Calle Barquillo, Santo Tomé, San Mateo, Santa Engracia and Piamonte.
Naval Museum In Madrid
Within the museum you will find a collection that focuses on the Spanish naval history as well as collections comprising an overview of the navies of other countries. The museum also has an ethnographic collection which displays, in chronological order, stamps, medals, scientific instruments, weapons and manuscripts. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 2 PM and is closed on Mondays. The admission is free.

Thanks to the support of Telefónica as a Benefactor Sponsor of the Visitor Services and other Users improvement programme, the Museo del Prado is now the first Spanish museum and one of the few in the world to make its historical archive available online. By doing so it is leading the way in free access to information by making it possible to consult both its collection of works of art and the contents of its archive online.

Best Museums In Madrid: A Locals Travel Guide
One of my favorite things to do in Madrid on weekends or simply after getting out of office, was wandering in one of the towns numerous museums. Even though I am not a fervent museum visitor, I loved exploring the best museums in Madrid as it allowed me to learn more about the city and country that I was calling home for more than 2 years.
In Madrid, you have the top museums like Prado Art Museum or the Reina Sofia Museum with Picassos Guernica. However, there are many less known museums in Madrid that I got to know as a local. Get ready for museum hopping in Madrid, one of my favorite things to do in Madrid, Spain!
As mentioned, when I am traveling, I am usually not visiting EVERY museum of a destination. However, after living in Madrid for so long, I developed a natural curiosity for the towns museums.
And I got hooked immediately! They are very different from each other and youll learn a lot about Madrids and Spains past and culture. Ultimately learning about culture is yet another benefit of slow and sustainable travel. Its all about taking time.
I visited all the museums mentioned in this post and I split the article into 2 parts: first, the must-visit museums in Madrid and secondly, my top museums in Madrid from a locals perspective.
Some museums offer free entrance on certain days. I will share the info below each museum.

El Reina Sofia Art Museum
El Reina Sofia art museum is a tribute to Spains greatest artists, although it does house a few foreign names. Some of the better-known works shown here include Picassos Guernica and Dalis The Persistence of Memory, which if seen in person, puts all those mass-distributed dorm posters to shame. The museum itself is also quite stunning including a glass elevator for an entrance and modern architecture that plays with the elements of natural lighting.
Museo Del Greco Virtual Tour Toledo
The Museo del Greco is a small intimate museum dedicated to the famed Mannerist painter El Greco. The Mannerists disavowed realism and instead sought to capture the underlying psychology of a subject. El Greco is best known for supernatural visions of tortuously elongated and twisted figures painted in colorful pigments. They still seem somewhat modern even now.
El Grecos titular museum in Toledo seeks to convey an understanding of El Grecos works and his influence on early 17th century Toledo. The museum is constructed to replicate El Grecos actual home in Toledo.

Real Academia De Bellasartes De San Fernando
Like the Louvre in Paris, it can get crowded in the Prado Museum. But if you want to enjoy a quieter gallery in Madrid, try what’s known as the hidden Prado – the art museum of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts San Fernando. There, you’ll have enough space to contemplate works by Goya, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Domenikos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco, and the religious Baroque painter Francisco de Zurbaran in peace.
Best Time To Visit The Golden Triangle Of Art In Madrid
You can visit all these Madrid art museums any time of the year. But there are some days of the week that are better than others to visit. Here are the current free admission days for each museum. Be sure to check the museum website prior to your visit for up-to-date information).
Prado Museum: Monday to Saturday, from 6pm to 8pm, and Sundays and holidays, from 3pm to 5pm.
Reina Sofia Art Centre: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday Friday and Saturday from 7pm to 9pm. Sundays from 15:00 to 19:00. Closed Tuesdays.
Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum: Mondays from 12pm to 4pm.

Along with his fantastic art the visitor enjoys a unique experience admiring the environment. The Real Academia de San Fernando does not just hold the second largest collection of art from Goya, but also the place where top artists like Dali and Picasso studied, an actual academy and a place to enjoy sculpture, photography, many fantastic objects and one of the world´s most important copper plates collections.

If bad luck prevents you from going to Bilbao that is not a problem. Its Fine Arts Museum, one of the most important in the Basque Country, is very complete and can be visited online. Guggenheim Bilbao Virtual Tour Bilbao
Who can argue with the emblematic Guggenheim Museum? Inaugurated in 1997, Frank Gehrys twisting shimmering museum is the star of Bilbao Spain. The space age building is an awe-inspiring blend of titanium, glass, and limestone. The scaly exterior evokes a silvery fish and the wings of the building reimagine the wind-filled sails of a ship.
Outside, theres a veritable sculpture museum. Inside, the Guggenheims modern art collection is on par with Europes best modern art museums. Youll find works by Robert Motherwell, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol, Eduardo Chillada, Richard Serra, and Anselm Kiefer.
Via Google Arts & Culture, you can virtually explore the Guggenheim Bilbao. The interactive online offering includes cinematographic photos, videos, and guided tours of masterpieces from the collection. The Guggenheim Bilbao also has its own online collection with images and analyses of its seminal works.
The Reina Sofia Museum

If you are an art lover and want to see the paintings of Spains most prestigious artists, then you cant skip the Reina Sofia Museum. Located at only 10 minutes walk from El Prado Museum, Reina Sofia Museum mainly hosts 20-century art.
Often seen as the modern counterpart of El Prado, the Reina Sofia is divided into 2 buildings. One hosts a permanent collection with paintings from Dali and Pablo Picassos world famous Guernica, the other half is open to temporary exhibits.

The Prado Museum Virtual Tour Madrid
The Prado is special. Its Spains cultural jewel, boasts one of Europes finest and most sensuous painting collections, and is a must see site in Madrid.
The Prado opened in 1819 as the Royal Museum of Paintings. The artistic anchors of the Prado are Francisco Goya, Diego Velázquez, and Peter Paul Rubens. But there are also masterpieces by Titian, Bosch, and El Greco.
Now you can Prado in your PJs. If you want to take a virtual tour of the Prado, you can. The Prado recently broadcast a live video in which its director, Miguel Falomir, gave a 20 minute talk on Tintorettos famed Christ Washing the Disciples Feet.
The Prado also has a 360 virtual tour of its Rubens exhibition and an impressive online collection of over 10,000 works of art. Smarthistory has a large cache of YouTube videos exploring many of the Prados best works. The Prado also does a live one hour show on Instagram, also posted on Facebook, every morning at 10:00 am.
San Fernando Royal Academy Of Fine Arts

This institution was born in the early stages of the Bourbon monarchy in Spain. Its development came from initiatives from the time of Philip V, brought to life thanks to Ferdinand VI. This led to one of the countrys great artistic institutes. The San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts developed considerably with Charles III and his heirs. It survived the republican periods, already established as a centre of reference, and now has an extensive collection. This can be seen perfectly thanks to the great virtual tour they have created. It is very well designed, as it could not be otherwise, and combines static panoramic views with 360 mapping to go through its different floors.

Picasso Museum Malaga Virtual Tour Malaga
Opened in 2003, the Picasso Museum in Malaga is housed in the Buena Vista Palace, a pretty combination of Renaissance and Mudejar architecture. Small but sweet, the museum holds 285 works donated by Picassos family members or held on permanent loan. Mostly from his grandson Bernard.
The collection spans Picassos lifetime and gives a good overview. You wont find any masterpieces here. But highlights include Picassos early academic studies, cubist pieces, and some of his last paintings from the 1970s.
The museum website provides virtual tours of Picassos different creative periods and virtual tours of its current exhibitions. The museum also has a YouTube video that takes you through its collection.
