The Pérez Art Museum Miami officially known as the Jorge M. Pérez Art Museum of Miami-Dade Countyis a contemporary artmuseum that relocated in 2013 to the Museum Park in DowntownMiami, Florida. Founded in 1984 as the Center for the Fine Arts, it became known as the Miami Art Museum from 1996 until it was renamed in 2013 upon the opening its new building designed by Herzog & de Meuron at 1103 Biscayne Boulevard. PAMM, along with the $275 million Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science and a city park which are being built in the area with completion in 2017, is part of the 20-acre Museum Park .

In 2014, the museum’s permanent collection contained over 1,800 works, particularly 20th- and 21st-century art from the Americas, Western Europe and Africa. In 2016, the museum’s collection contained nearly 2,000 works.

Since the opening of the new museum building at Museum Park, the museum has seen record attendance levels with over 150,000 visitors in its first four months. The museum had originally anticipated over 200,000 visitors in its first year at the new location. At its former location on Flagler Street, the museum received on average about 60,000 visitors annually.

The museum is also home to Verde, which well humbly call the best museum restaurant in America even without its breezy bayside terrace.Know before you go: PAMM is currently only open 2-9 pm on Thursday, and 11 am – 6 pm Friday through Sunday. Tickets must be reserved in advance due to limited capacity. Admission is $16 for adults, $12 for seniors, students, and children 7-18. Children 6 and under are free.

Design DistrictNorman Bramans gift to the city that bought his cars for decades, this free museum in the Design District serves to both showcase the word of avant garde artists and as a home for art research and education. The exhibits change frequently, and run the gamut from sculpture to photography to room-filling installations. Before the pandemic, ICA also ran community programs to engage the city in the art world, and currently offers seminars and lectures you can view online. Perhaps its greatest feature, though, is the outdoor sculpture garden, a quiet escape from the bustling city where, on cool winter days, you can enjoy modern art with no distractions.Know before you go: ICA is open Tuesday-Saturday from 11 am – 6 pm, Sunday from 12-5pm. DowntownYou no doubt know the Freedom Tower, the iconic bright orange Mediterranean Revival skyscraper across from the American Airlines Arena that some have dubbed the Cuban Ellis Island. What you may not know is that it houses Miami-Dade Colleges Museum of Art and Design, where you can peruse the schools permanent collection of more than 1,900 works in genres from painting to videography. In tribute to its role as the gateway to freedom for thousands of Miamians, the museum also runs frequent photo exhibitions telling the citys story from that era. The mezzanine level is dominated by the New World Mural 1513, which was actually painted in 1987, but makes a striking historical tableau of the early conquest of Florida.Know before you go: The museum is open Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 1-5pm. Saturdays it is open 1-8pm. Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors and military, $5 for students with ID. Children under 12, MDC staff, MDC students, and MDC faculty are free.

Civil War And Reconstruction

American settlers began to establish cotton in north Florida, which required numerous laborers, which they supplied by buying slaves in the domestic market. By 1860, Florida had only 140,424 people, of whom 44% were enslaved. There were fewer than 1,000 free before the American Civil War.

On January 10, 1861, nearly all delegates in the Florida Legislature approved an ordinance of secession, declaring Florida to be “a sovereign and independent nation”an apparent reassertion to the preamble in Florida’s Constitution of 1838, in which Florida agreed with Congress to be a “Free and Independent State.” The ordinance declared Florida’s secession from the , allowing it to become one of the founding members of the .

The Confederacy received little military help from Florida the 15,000 troops it offered were generally sent elsewhere. Instead of troops and manufactured goods, Florida did provide salt and, more importantly, beef to feed the Confederate armies. This was particularly important after 1864, when the Confederacy lost control of the Mississippi River, thereby losing access to Texas beef. The largest engagements in the state were the , on February 20, 1864, and the , on March 6, 1865. Both were Confederate victories. The war ended in 1865.

Frist Art Museum Presents On The Horizon: Contemporary Cuban Art From The Prez Art Museum Miami

WOPHA Conference at PAMM Day 1 Afternoon Session

Heaven

NASHVILLE, Tenn. The Frist Art Museum presents On the Horizon: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Pérez Art Museum Miami, an exhibition that explores the diverse cultural and political landscapes of Cuba and its diaspora through the paintings, photographs, sculptures, videos, and installations of fifty artists. Drawn from one of the largest public collections of Cuban art in the United States, On the Horizon will be on view in the Frists Ingram Gallery from January 28 through May 1, 2022.

Featuring approximately seventy works by Cuban artists of multiple generations, the exhibition inspires dialogue regarding the physical, social, and political landscape of the island and its diaspora. Artists include Yoan Capote, Los Carpinteros, Teresita Fernández, Enrique Martinez-Celaya, and Zilia Sánchez. Vanderbilt University art professor María Magdalena Campos-Pons, who won the prestigious Pérez Prize in 2021 in honor of her powerful explorations of history, race, and culture, has two large triptychs in the exhibition.

Because of the strained history of Cuba-US relations and current unrest in Cuba, especially in artistic and intellectual circles, the exhibitions timeliness cannot be overstated, says Frist Art Museum chief curator Mark Scala. In these works, guests will see hardship and humor, despair and hopefulness, spirituality and political critique.
