Here’s How President Biden’s COVID-19 Plan Will Impact US Travel

Hikers asked not to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail this year

Hikers hoping to spend 2021 hiking the Appalachian Trail are being asked to postpone their trips until 2022 by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, citing concerns over the spread of COVID-19. Health officials say that the COVID-19 risk comes not from the hike itself, but the travel to and from trail points across the country. The ATC is actively discouraging long-distance hiking this year, and says it will not be distributing any AT Hangtags in 2021. Hangtags are plastic tags given to hikers that have registered their thru-hike with the ATC. Distribution of the hangtags helps the agency understand how many hikers are using the trail per year. Hangtags will not be distributed until the CDC has deemed the pandemic “under control,” or a vaccine is more widely available to the general population. ATC President and CEO, Sandra Marra, told CNN that “we’re really basing our guidance on the best information we have. The guidance is based on science, on the states and the federal outline as to how we can proceed until everyone is fully vaccinated.”The Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking footpath in the world, covering over 2,180 miles of the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Maine.

Attend A Sports Event

DC is slowly becoming a sports city with highly ranked professional teams that are often favorites, even if we havent made it to the ship yet in many cases!

Nationals

The Washington Nationals baseball team is one of the best in the National League and the relatively new Nats Park stadium is rather luxurious.

You can easily spend $100s for the good seats, but the $10 standing room tickets are a big hit and you can watch the game from the bar in the outfield.

Nats Park is an easy walk from Navy Yard station on the Green line just follow all the fans in red ballcaps!

Capitals and Wizards:

DC residents are big Capitals fans and rightfully so, as our hockey team is a good one to cheer for! Both the Capitals and the Wizards basketball team play at Verizon Center.

The games are played downtown at the famed Verizon Center in Chinatown, easily accessible on foot, by bus, or on the Red, Yellow, Green lines.

DC United:

DC United soccer team will eventually get a new stadium, but for now, theyre kicking around at RFK Stadium, accessible on the Blue, Orange, Silver lines at the Stadium-Armory stop.

RFK Stadium shows its age but it’s a nostalgic experience for anyone who prefers old-school seats and hotdog stands.

Redskins:

Technically, the football team plays in Maryland, at FedEx Field. Even though it’s not in the city, its still accessible by public transportation.

The pandemic isnt yet over, but D.C. is unquestionably reopening. On May 21, Mayor Muriel Bowser lifted capacity restrictions at most venues, including restaurants, schools, offices, and retail. On June 11, restrictions will be lifted for nightclubs and entertainment venues. If you havent noticed, local music venues are booking shows for the coming months, theaters are preparing to offer live performances, and museums on the Mall and elsewhere across the city are welcoming patrons back . Yesterday afternoon, the Smithsonian announced reopening dates for its 10 museums that remained closed to the public the entire system will be open to visitors for the first time since March 2020 at the end of August. Nature is healing, etc.

The CDC says that indoor and outdoor activities pose minimal risk to fully vaccinated people, COVID-wise, and that those fully vaccinated people are probably not going to get the unvaccinated in their lives sick either. On a chart about choosing activities, going to an indoor, uncrowded venue is marked safest for the vaccinated.

So in that spirit, heres a lightly curated roundup of what museums are open around the city when. Many places will require timed entry and masks on the premises.
